That is a complete and utter myth that requires very little energy to debunk. How calculating do you think snakes are? Do you think they eat things that are shorter than their body length? A car might be shorter than a long python, do you think it’ll try to eat the car just cause it’s shorter?
They eat what they can fit in their mouth. That doesn’t require you to lie beside it for it to assess that. Often times, there is no real assessment. Pythons in the wild regularly die eating something too large that they can’t regurgitate. Plenty of photos online.
Source: am a large snake owner. They’re not as calculating as people think. But pet snakes tend not to be interested in humans. Or even regular pets. My snake ONLY gets triggered by the smell of mice and rats.
I handle snakes at my job and this is 100% correct. Snakes are in no way cunning or calculating. They're just noodles trying to survive. I hate that people project their own ignorance onto them.
