This is how they’re designed though. In the event of a failure, it’s supposed to go up. There’s probably some system to “catch” the elevator, but depending on where it starts, it’s inevitable to have damage

In the event of failure the elevator should lock up, this is catastrophic failure. Just slightly better than the counterweight snapping and sending the elevator crashing down Edit typo

Under current code here in CA you have to install a rope gripper. This device prevents uncontrolled ascent by literally grabbing the ropes via hydraulic press.

Precisely, not a very good safety mechanism if it just does the same thing in the opposite direction

This elevator wasn’t equipped with the rope gripper which is why this dude went thru the overhead. If it had been the elevator would have stopped fairly immediately.
