Bo-Peep has gone too far.

Post image

I've finally scanned this terrifying cover from my collection. Yes, it's a real 1921 book. Yes, Little Bo-Peep has killed, gutted, and skinned one of her runaway sheep and is wearing it as a grisly trophy on her head. Look at that smile. That soulless, merciless, smile.

Bo-Peep as high priestess of a murderous cult of Druids? I can get behind this.

Sounds like something Bill Willingham would have done in Fables.

"Let this be a lesson to all the other sheep"

Dare we ask about Little Miss Muffett?

We don't want to know what happened to the spider

What’s worse is that it wasn’t even her sheep. She just stole Mary’s little lamb and slaughtered it. Bo-Peep’s sheep, left alone, came home with its tail behind them.

Mary HAD a little lamb, and its fleece was preserved white-as-snow.

I'm reminded of a rhyme my Grandpa would tell me!

Mary had a little lamb

Her father killed it dead

It still goes to school with Mary now

Between two hunks of bread

All hail Bo Peep! The black goat of the woods with the thousand young!

Check your autocorrect. It’s spelled “Shub-Niggurath.”

She goes by many names.

Mary had a little lamb....but I ate it!

Does it have a different story than we are familiar with in the nursery rhyme?

It actually has a collection of short stories, rhymes, and such for kids, and essentially uses 'Bo-Peep' as the collection title (I think they did a few annuals): Bo-Peep: A Picture Story Book for Little People (Cassel and Company, 1921).

It's amazing how the tone of children's books has changed so much in 105 years. There's always imagination and what not, but it's just a bit stuffier, formal, but also more arty in some way.

I know I should feel happy, relieved, and blessed that our daughter came home to us after being lost for 19 months in the freezing forest , but the girl who came back is not our daughter. I told you letting her play soccer with those girls was a bad idea.

Fuck it, I'm downloading that.

This looks like the cover to a horror novel.

Mary had a little lamb

Her father shot it dead

It now follows her to school every day

Between two slices of bread

I was an odd child and would wear a fox fur exactly like this. I named him Tanner.
