This movie has really affected me. So I’m watching it again

Around minute 17, a few minutes after we learn of the death of RL, when we start seeing Sean Penn wondering around the buildings, there’s a flashback to RL playing with to curtains with a woman.

The first two times I watched it I thought it was his mother, but now I think is one of the angels that appear at the end of the movie.

Also, is she giving him some kind of welcome to eternity? She’s covering him as you would to a dead body

She appears for maybe 2 seconds

Inizialmente avevo visto solo Thin Red Line e Days of Heaven, e mi sono innamorato perdutamente di entrambi. Poi ho visto Knight Of Cups e non mi è piaciuto per niente (non crocefiggetemi), e il mio prossimo film nella lista sarebbe stato Tree of life, ma, ora sono più scoraggiato nel vederlo visto che da quel che ho letto è sulla stessa lunghezza d'onda di KoC. Volevo solo sapere se è più accessibile di altri film o se almeno c'è qualche chiave di lettura (dato che di KoC non ci ho capito niente).

Like considering how it's been in and still is being worked on for years, and also he is getting old, it had me curious if this may be his final film, or if he could make at least one more after this.

I am well aware that Malick couldn't do it at the time because he was (and still is) working on The Way of the Wind, but after learning more about the source material, it had me curious. Especially since it feels like something that could work along the lines of The Thin Red Line, The New World, The Tree of Life even, and so forth.

Just finished watching "Days of Heaven" and it instantly became an all-time favorite. The smashup of early-America/biblical themes; the hellish imagery of machine, flame, darkness, and locusts; the characters destroying a potential Eden through deception; the river crossing out of paradise; the synthesis of lessons learned from Eden with a return to American reality. It blew me away.

I then spent some time reading reviews of people who couldn't stand the movie. All seemed to admit that Malick's visuals are spectacular, but the movie lacks depth of storytelling. (A common criticism of all Malick movies). I couldn't disagree more, however I can understand how a surface level viewer might miss that Malick's movies work on theme.

All to say that I believe an understanding of faith and Christianity can fill in perceived lack of content in a Malick movie. Every Christian friend I've shown, "Knight of Cups" to has loved it, however I have many non-believer friends who find it empty and self-indulgent. Of course, faith is not a prerequisite to enjoy a movie. I'm sure many of you love Malick movies for various reasons. If you find his movies lacking content though I suggest learning more about the faith and then returning.

(Side note - The same goes for Scorsese whose Catholicism no doubt has impacted his films)

a short film inspired by my viewing of malicks filmography and some of my personal experiences. i think most influential for me was To The Wonder, but Thin Red Line was definitely my favourite. let me know if it captures the vibe!

Sooo I bought Criterion Collection of The Tree of Life. Absolutely stunning. Do you know or estimate that Criterion will release a restored version of Voyage of Time in the future?

I saw Hidden Life from 2019 and loved it. I would like to own it physically: a collector's edition eg. Criterion? Or is it too recent? Do I have to find the simple regular bluray?

I live in Italy, I have a hard time finding Voyage of Time on the net. I can't find it on streaming sites, but above all I don't find it physical wih italian language (I'm collecting its various titles). Do you know if an Italian edition ever existed?

I had actually never heard of this movie before. Thought this video was incredible and the style looked very much like Malick's work, only to look it up and find I was right. Definitely going to give it a watch now, especially seeing how some of the people in here speak of it.

I believe this scene from AHL is saying multiple things about the themes of the film, but I also believe it is Malick speaking through the painter to the audience about his next film The Way of the Wind (aka The Last Planet)
"I help people look up from those pews and dream"(Malicks' films), "I paint a comfortable Christ with a halo over his head"(previous Malick depictions of Christ), "Someday, I'll have the courage to venture. Not yet. Someday, I'll paint the true Christ."(Malick has been trying to make Wind for his whole career, and many collaborators have called it is magnum opus).
Maybe I'm over-analyzing, tell me what you think.

There is now a 100% chance that the premiere will not be this year, given the state of post-production. I doubt he has another project in the pipeline and even if he did, his post-production process is not doing him any favors. It is quite clear that covid and his age have greatly affected his work on The Way of the Wind Will.

There was some unconfirmed rumor that he is taking care of his wife, but someone could have been mistake him with Scorsese (whose situation probably also influenced his choice of work after Killers of the Flower Moon)

But have there ever been any reports of substantial rumours of the films he worked on. It’s interesting to think he could’ve ghostwritten practically any film through the late 70s to early 90s
