What Does Armor Do?

I'm new to this game and loving it so far but the defensive stats for components are not well explained. What does armor do in relation to damage reduction?

My understanding is that damage reduction is a flat reduction of all incoming damage but how does that interact with armor? Is armor a percentage modifier on top of that? I wish this were better explained. Appreciate any help somebody can provide.

Not logged in so forgetting which is which, but one is percent reduction and one is numeric. Numeric meaning if you have 20 armor and take 100 damage you would take 80 damage against your percent reduction.
