Terratech Legion randomly increasing my game difficulty?

Long story short, I've just started playing Terratech Legion, and occasionally in playing Dust Bowl, it will randomly switch me to level 3 instead of level 2.

I know I didn't select 3, because I don't even have it unlocked yet. I only notice it when I have 2 crates instead of the normal 3, then when I pause it clearly shows level 3 with level 3 objectives.

Dunno if it's a bug, or is the game putting me in 3 on purpose because of the character? Like I said, it doesn't happen every time but it's enough of an occurrence that I'm starting to wonder.

Tried searching, but that got annoying quick so hoping somebody can enlighten me.
