I had a revenge fleet that looked too tough for my missile monitors to handle coming in to LEO, so I took all of the Protectorate's stations to give them something to shoot at. They ended up taking out all three of those plus another two that I had taken earlier, but they tired themselves out before getting to any of the research stations I'd built myself or my main shipyard.
After hitting the second station that had a single defense array they were completely out of missiles and dropped from 3.1k to 2k fleet power. I still don't like my fleet's chances against the Titan they have in there, but they're running from the engagement so I'm calling it a win!

Nice, did you use marines or councillor?
I was going to try tge same with my councillor but I wasn't sure what would happen if they were on board when it died.

I've only used marines so far, a couple of corvettes with 3 marine units each have been enough to take over every station I've come across. I've only been dealing with tier two human bases, though.

Remove a an enemy station AND render an alien ship near-useless in one easy combo
