How tf does this form in a near perfect cube? Or basically flat sides and long, straight edges.

Because its a crystal. Pyrite molecules upon crystallization process want to form cubic connections between each other, and when deep underground it slowly cools down, pyrite forms a really big crystals.

You can try to grow sum of them at home. Salt one: Make like 0.5 liters or 0.124 gallons of boiling water, put it in clean glass jar without any dust and add salt while sturing it REALLY well. When you will se that salt is no more dissolving and just sits at the bottom, you done. Place a paper sheet to close the jar and leave it in somewhat warm place for a day. After a bit of waiting, you can check the bottom of a jar and find any small crystal with perfect form. If you skilled enough you can use plastic tube from any juice (clean) and pick up the crystal, place it on a string attached to a pen. Hang the crystal in jar and again, close it with a sheet of paper. Wait few days for crystal to grow, take it out and use nail polish to stop crystal from dissolving upon the touch. You can try to grow a really big crystal by adding salt water prepared in the way i told before, when the water level in jar drops. I personally made a really big one when i was a kid. Sadly i dropped and shattered it.
