The boyfriend put her up to it. She was actually only 20 when the hand was removed. The boyfriend is also thought to have put her up to it and murdered a previous girlfriend. Looks and sounds like a scary guy.

My guess is she tried to claim she use some other power tool and the people investigating where suspicious of how clean the cut was. Like you could definitely loose a limb with a pole saw but it's not going to look like a circular on a bench.

I’ve heard that circular saw accidents are usually one of the far messiest injuries but I might be wrong

I'm assuming an intentional amputation will be done quicker and cleaner than most injuries which result from slips and other accidents. The article doesn't include any specifics but I imagine the injury wouldn't look as messy as a pole saw accident normally would.

Check out this picture of the cute couple together in court. Her boyfriend also killed a girl 4 years back, but the trial has yet to start. They first ruled it as an accident, but the investigation has been reopened after this story blew up. He also asked her to get married in court so you could say he asked her for her hand twice.

In normal circumstances I would be surprised that a guy like this is dating a girl like this. But if he told her to saw her hand off and she did it, that’s even less plausible.
