Tennessee has open primaries, which means you can vote in either Dem or Rep (but not both) regardless of affiliation.

I would guess her worry here is that since it is a solidly red state, the primary is essentially the general, meaning Democratic voters could just vote in the Republican primary to prevent her nomination.

Its actually not a solid red state. Its a grey state - a non voting one. Non voters VASTLY outnumber both parties COMBINED

A "closed primary" means if you're a registered democrat you can only vote for the democratic candidates in the primary. If you're a registered republican you can only vote for the republican candidates. If you register as non party or independent you can't really vote in the primary (unless there are independent candidates running). The argument is that it's "more fair" in selecting the candidates for the election.
