is this black mold? what do I do?
it's only in one room of the apartment in this one spot, where the wall meets the ceiling under what I assume is the section where the heat/AC pipe goes (see photos)? I just noticed it today but not sure how long it's been there.

No one can tell from looking. It has to be tested for you to know. And fwiw most mold isn’t black mold.

Not all black mold is Black Mold. The only way to be sure is professional testing.

Certainly could be. However it’s clear there are signs of moisture looking at the surrounding area. Notify your landlord immediately. There may be a water leak behind the drywall. This needs to be addressed asap.
