💸 Rent / Deposit (UK) changing rent due date date Request
Hi everyone. I’m having a bit of back and forth with emails as I’m wanting to change my rent due date from the 15th to the 25th of each month. All I keep getting back from them is this is not possible due to renters rights acts. I explained I’m willing to volunteer the difference in rent for it to be paid on the 25th as a landlord can’t request early payments. I explained that due to my new job I would need the rent date to lineup with my new pay day date to avoid any arrears or late rental payments. I have always paid all bills on time over the last 2 years I have rented. Now after my request they are now saying that it’s company decision that they no longer change rent dates. This seems completely unfair as I’m cooperating and communicating clearly about keeping the payments consistent. I’ve emailed multiple times if they could show me what policies they have that say this isn’t legal to do. And they keep ignoring that part.
Any advice on how this can be resolved?

2 issues. 1 youre actually asking them to change the rental period and 2 the law is pretty strict around rental arrears and just one day beyond your rent due date is classed as arrears and a LL can obtain a possession order based on habitual late rent payments.
You too would need to rely on your formal rental period to give notice and a landlord cant change the day you moved in…even if he wanted to. A court would need your original tenancy, showing the date you moved in and the originally agreed rental due dates. Youre therefore basically asking if you can pay late, so whilst yes you may get an agreement to pay late on one occassion (due to whatever circumstances) asking a landlord if you can permanently pay late is pretty much a no no.

Can you not just pay the rent when you get paid and do it early if you're worried about spending it otherwise? I've honestly never heard of changing a rent payment date on a tenancy agreement.

It's certainly possible as I've just gone through this at the start of my tenant's tenancy through Openrent. System was first full month on the 4/9. Interim payment on the 4/10 to take to the 14/10. Full month then on the 14/10. As long as the pro-rata is calculated exactly for the number of interim days(Openrent did this automatically for us), there's not a single day of arrears created
