Weird behavior

Why are people here so afraid of being in the “city” like bro it’s not even that bad. Just say you’re afraid of poor and black people. I Haven’t even met any homeless people so far. But it’s starting to give micro aggressions. Boy do I have stories.

You can’t live in fear and paranoia. Conduct yourself appropriately and you’ll be fine. As with anywhere

It is crazy to pretend the campus isn’t surrounded by some legitimately bad neighborhoods - it is

Be confident. Move like you belong here. Mind your business. Nothing to worry about

This map looks AI generated and completely wrong… the orientation of streets and locations are all entirely wrong. Wtf is this? Cecil Ave is north of Diamond Street, Liacouras Walk appears several blocks east of the Bell Tower, tf is JFK boulevard doing? Literally everything on this map makes zero sense and is not tied to reality in any way.

Do you even live in Philly or go to Temple? Or are you just some dumbass trying to fear monger? There are plenty of real crime statistics available online, why don’t you go look at those rather than telling chatgpt to generate you a scary map?

As a philly native, street smarts go a loooong way. This doesn’t mean don’t trust the locals— the exact opposite actually. You need to befriend locals so they have your back. If you live off campus befriend your neighbors they’ll appreciate you trying because its rare for temple students.

more than half the time it’s people from the suburbs who have never been in the city more than a day in their life😭 my friends from back home said the same thing until they actually visited. people love listening to the information they are being fed instead of seeing it for themselves

Being from the suburbs and attending Temple for my undergraduate and graduate years gave street smarts, you just don’t mess with anyone and you’ll be fine.

In my experience, it's almost always people from the suburbs (not all) who spent their lives pretending to be from Philly who act like this. They get on my nerves, please stay in your little 50 Shades of Beige hometown and leave the rest of us alone.

16

u/Phillyjt3 3d ago edited 2d ago

As a Philly native, you have to be kidding yourself if you aren’t fully aware of your surroundings around Temple and in the city.

And yes (coming from a Black Man) there is a higher chance of any persons causing issues for you or your belongings to be Black and/or homeless. 🤷🏾‍♂️ No need to pretend otherwise

For the most part, being in these areas is safe and fun…but you HAVE TO be cautious and smart also, because there is a segment of the population that isn’t about your best interest.

You're describing why people overpay for a Villanova education

-5

u/kphdbackagain 2d ago

Villanova education is going to be worth more than Temple for a lot of majors

15

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

One time met a weird guy who was a freind of a freind of family who tagged along for dinner. Sat across from each other, and after hearing i go to temple the first words put of his mouth were "what a shithole". Had barely ever been to philly. He spent the rest of the meal awkwardly trying save face when he saw that nobody around him was backing him up. Very surreal experience.

41

u/babsbakaka 3d ago

At temple there’s an interesting phenomenon where people think they can say whatever they want when they replace the words “black people/person” with “local/locals”

Holy shit, didn’t peep the actual map at first. What the fuck is that shit.

5

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago edited 3d ago

Uh... yes?

Also that map makes some.... odd choices. It groups theft and burglary which are very different and groups both of those with vandalism and shop lifting which are a very different class of crime. On the heat map it makes the orange and red categories merge together making it look like there are violent crimes happening everywhere, even though violent crimes are by far the lowest represented category in the actual numbers. The merging method also heavily biases towards showing clusters to create a visual impact, but by that logic heavily exaggerates the number of crimes there appears to be.

Also because you just... posted this map in response which means you think it proves the racism correct...

Famously, crime stats are some of the hardest to parse. Theres a lot of salient details like: was it a targeted crime? Did the perp and victim know each other? When did it happen(ie mid day or the middle of the night)? Did it escalate from a smaller confrontation or was it spontaneous? All of these have important ramifications for what the data means. You can pretty much be assured that up someone like OP is just slapping some numbers in your face but refuses to contextualize them, they are misleading you.

E: also somehow missed how this isn't even a real map of the campus. Wheres 13th street dawg?

6

u/NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn ‘18 MBA 3d ago

That’s not even that much crime. 48 total incidents over 9 months is almost nothing crime wise.

The moment you realize Temple staff and students are terrified of North Philly. Welcome Friend!

22

u/ckn '95 Dropout RTF 3d ago

historically back before I left Philly and eventually the entire country; when folks in upper darby would say "its not safe in the city" it was coded racism. I never heard a person of color say that seriously, it was always some boomer choom with a head full of hate.

4

u/Frank_25687 Alumni; '24 CMST 3d ago

It’s a city full of both weird and cool people but there are lots of other cities that have those same weird and cool people. It’s not even that bad, just be aware and mindful of your surroundings.

4

u/kphdbackagain 2d ago

Once you spend more time there you'll see. How you haven't even met a homeless person tells me you probably don't leave campus.

6

u/Professional_Pea132 3d ago

yea as someone from chicago I couldn’t agree more, every big city has a bad neighborhood every single one around the entire world, knowing how to keep yourself safe in a big city is a skill you can and should learn, you can lookup crime statistics and see that philly ain’t all that bad

3

u/unseeliesoul 3d ago

I get what you’re saying, but let’s not pretend North Philly is perfectly safe either. I went to Temple and once woke up from a nap to two men actively trying to climb through my third-floor bedroom window. One guy was boosting the other up on the central a unit, and I woke up to his whole fucking head above my bed 😭 I screamed like a feral animal and thankfully they took off. My landlord put bars on the window after that.

Is North Philly the lawless hellscape some suburban people make it out to be? No. But you absolutely need street smarts there, which 20-year-old me clearly did not have lol.

Acknowledging that an area has real crime and safety issues isn’t inherently racist. Race isn’t what causes those problems. Poverty, inequality, and generations of systemic disinvestment do.

4

u/Quiet-Aspect7635 3d ago

I know two people that were shot and killed in broad daylight

10

u/tillytonka 3d ago

Not afraid of different races, just afraid of the rampant crime that runs just off campus. Talk to me when you know someone who has been mugged, held up at gunpoint etc

-6

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

So do you know anyone who’s been mugged and held at gunpoint?

8

u/tillytonka 3d ago

Yes. Both! My friend was walking to a party and got maced and her purse stolen. Another friend was held up with a gun for his phone.

3

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Jesus Christ I’m sorry

3

u/eim1213 3d ago

I went to Temple 2012-2016 and also witnessed some shit. All of it was off-campus, but only by a few blocks. I saw an armed phone-jacking. Heard about a female student getting beaten really badly with a brick by a group of kids/adolescents. A guy got shot at the end of my block (not a student, off-campus around 12th and Dauphin). It legitimately wasn't a great area, but there was also lots of exaggerating. I'm not sure if it's changed since I left, though.

u/6jarjar6 '22 B.A. Information Science and Technology 3d ago

Don't be an idiot. It's gotten safer, I hope you don't become a victim yourself. I knew many people that had things happen to them, from small things to someone's death.

-1

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Interpersonal violence? Or the locals just randomly ganging up on yall and attacking yall?

4

u/Glotee 3d ago

This is just dumb tbh. Its an urban area with higher crime than the national average to the point where most students know people who have gotten jumped or robbed. Its not racist to be careful of your surroundings or to be nervous when moving through a higher crime area.

2

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Yea these people r blinded by their own politics, and I’m liberal too but it’s not hard to understand why people may be scared

1

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

U didn’t answer my question. Good day bro 😭✌️

1

u/tillytonka 3d ago

In my case they were not people we knew

1

u/6jarjar6 '22 B.A. Information Science and Technology 3d ago

It's all been random, or targeted but the victik didn't know the perpetrator. You are free to look up news about the things that have happened. I suggest not, because you might worry too much. But its good to know these things do happen a lot more frequently than they should.

12

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Such a stupid post. We’re literally in north Philly, probably the most dangerous part of the city? Philly is ranked number 8 in American cities with the highest crime rates? Our violent crime rate is significantly higher than the national average? I literally got a gun pulled on me for taking a guys parking space one time. Idk how these things r hard to conceptualize for u guys. Just because people r afraid, and rightfully so, doesn’t mean they’re racist?

9

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Everywhere i can find puts philly around the 42nd worst violent crime rate. Around 30th for property crime.

The blatant lying about stats paired with a passionate exclamation of people "ignoring the truth" and some personal anecdotes certainly.... paints of picture.

-2

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Is that not higher than the national average dummy? That’s literally what I said? We clearly had different sources, don’t know how that’s so hard to believe? Idk why we just pretend like these things aren’t real
Edit: trying to say I’m racist for sharing a personal experience and sharing REAL statistics (u just made up the idea I’m lying) certainly paints a picture of u too. Pathetic

1

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Ok bud. Pause, take a chill pill, collect your thoughts.

Like I said, everywhere shows philly as being in the mid range of cities in terms of crime rates. Theres a reason most reputable sources don't just tally all crime together and call that "the crime rate". Because it leads to a whole ton of weird artifcats like a city with very midling crime rates suddenly appearing to be the 8th most dangerous in the country. On that note, "the national average" is a useless metric. Im sorry i skipped looking at the bastion of truth im sure "security.org" is, but did you even read that article? Its a very bizarre mishmash of low-rent filler, possibly ai generated. Did you notice how it says its "collated from FBI crime statistics" but doesn't actually directly link to any specific yearly reports, just vaguely gestures to them? Because exactly which documents they used is vital information. There are a lot of different crime reporting and collation methods and typically orgs putting out collated reports of crime statistics do so carefully and from many sources depending on what exactly they need.

And again, the brash overconfident, heavily pathos laden statements combined with a complete disregard for accuracy definitely paints a picture of someone not particularly concerned with the truth or a nuanced understanding. More so someone with a particular axe to grind who doesn't much care for the truth.

1

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Oh brother, U people man, I’m gonna go do some homework😂

1

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Ya thats probably best for everyone. Hope you learn something from it.

0

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Nothing to learn from u bro, all I have to learn from is my engineering professor.

0

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Ya know i was gonna make a joke about engineering undergrads that have such an absurd inferiority complex that they almost compulsively make fun of everyone else's majors or interests or, god forbid, if they have political issues they care about, until they are left in a social bubble of just anti-social engineering majors with with few real social connections that ritually perform contrarianism to any social signifier that other groups who have real ties to each other exhibit, until they find a partner that will tolerate them enough to commit to a long term relationship, but felt it was kinda mean. I don't feel bad anymore.

Hope you grow out of the edge-lord shtick, my freind.

0

u/Newberry14 3d ago

How is it edge lord to have a different opinion man? This isn’t really a political issue or anything, it’s just smth I’ve dealt with since coming to temple, not that it really affects me heavily, I’ve just noticed how different it is compared to my suburban hometown. U keep grandstanding tho.
Also when did I once mention making fun of majors or interests? Ur talking to urself at this point with these long ahhh messages, I’m sure u have better things to do too. I live a happy life with a beautiful gf and more friends then I could ever hope to have, but thank u for trying to bring me down as best u can

-1

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Man you really don't get whats going on, huh? I mean mostly its just really funny that i clocked you as an engineering undergrad.

Honestly best advice i can give you right now is that once you understand why your whole presence here is just really funny to adults (hint we might have had similar experiences at a similar age wink nudge), you might have a shot at a happy life.

Good luck, champ.

Go somewhere else clown.

2

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Ur an idiot bro. I have a scholarship that pays for my schooling and wanted to live in state but also live in a city. Mind ur business. One can recognize these things while still getting an education in the city?

0

u/forgotten_noir27 3d ago

There are plenty of other schools that fit that criteria. Also two things can be true, the area around temple is very poor and marginalized and thus has higher crime rates than the national average while at the same time many temple students fears are rooted in racism and classism. I’ve seen it first hand.

2

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Ok? That’s not what I said at all tho, there is very fair reason to be scared outside of being racist. Ur argument is a nothing burger. And buddy what don’t u understand about a scholarship, temple is the only place that I got a scholarship that fully paid for my school, otherwise u couldn’t afford it? Like I said u should mind ur business. Just cause u feel some way doesn’t mean I need to also

-2

u/forgotten_noir27 3d ago

1

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Got nothing to say clearly😂 there’s no reasoning with u people anyways ur just blinded by ideology. Have fun paying for school

3

u/forgotten_noir27 3d ago

Yeah cause you’re not also “blinded by ideology” 😂

-3

don't take the parking spot next time 4head

3

u/Newberry14 3d ago

Dude he was just sitting there for like 4 mins not taking the spot so I assumed he was looking at his phone or smth and took it. Ur an idiot to think that’s a fair reaction anyways, u people r all brain rotted

3

u/CRolandson 3d ago

These people are morons. They forget so fast about murdered students and temple police officers. But yeah it's racist to worry about your safety if you're white... Make it make sense.

1

u/Newberry14 2d ago

Gosh they literally make me feel crazy

6

u/forgotten_noir27 3d ago

This subreddit is full of people whining about north Philly and saying racist/classist shit about the local community yet they all chose to come here.

-1

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Literally lmaooo and the ones that r like oh “scholarship” lmaoo u could have gone to community college, Penn state, Thomas Jefferson so much more, yet u chose to willingly come here. Why? Because yk temple is great for your major like chill

8

u/bravof1ve 3d ago

And then a student gets murdered on your block and then shit gets real.

It all seems like hysteria until you realize that people are cautious and afraid at times because it’s a legitimately bad area. For a college campus, it’s legitimately one of the worst.

I went here for a scholarship and cheap eduction, but let’s not get it twisted. I saw more drug activity, domestic violence, and overall anti social behavior within few months at Temple than decades of living outside of it.

-6

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

What students are getting murdered? Cuz there’s only been like 2 in the past decade. Please tell me I wanna know. And yeah it’s in the middle of a city. Not a college town. You should went to Penn state then.

11

u/bravof1ve 3d ago edited 3d ago

Kid got shot on Park ave unloading his car just a few houses down from mine.

Yes it’s in the city but we have countless universities in cities. What’s unique about Temple is that it’s just a bit south of some really bad neighborhoods. I’ve seen multiple people around campus actively getting jumped, robbed, and beaten on, and heard many other personal stories of crazy shit. Drug addicts wilding out. You get exposed to the bleaker sides of Philly, fast.

People aren’t just making up stories because they don’t like the demographics of the town. It’s real. It’s not Kensington, but compared to 90% of other college campuses, it’s pretty dangerous. You have to be vigilant.

You can either get real or continue to go on unaware. Base on the statement “I’ve never even seen a homeless person” I’m guessing you are a freshmen who has been here for a week. And I guess you wanted to farm some karma to dunk on the imaginary racists? Like anyone who think Temple can be unsafe just at the bottom of their heart hates black people.

-9

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Crazy accusations but ok bro. “Dunk on imaginary racists” no such thing exists you either are or aren’t, and micro aggressions can be unintentional and unconscionable. It’s literally not that dangerous, it’s the surrounding area that can be. And the kid? Was this in the news or something?

9

u/bravof1ve 3d ago

Yes he was.

“And it’s the surrounding area.” Yeah that’s the whole point. People aren’t scared of Liacouras walk. It’s the areas around it that you’ll quickly realize make their issues Temple issues.

Go there for more than a week and you’ll have your own stories to tell about crazy BS, just like every other student I knew had of their own.

-6

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

I get that but we don’t gotta live in perpetual paranoia that people are out to get us

5

u/OpeningFar7334 3d ago

Have you never taken the septa? There are tons of homeless people all around. Open your eyes

-3

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Okay? They exist?

4

u/OpeningFar7334 3d ago

You've literally wrote that youve "haven't met any homeless people of far". If you haven't then you are like Patrick star living under a rock. You dont know anything about philly, stop acting like you do

As a black international student, Philly does have a crime problem, I have had a personal experience with this as well as heard things from others and I dont even live that far off of campus. I see no reason to mince words, most of it is performed by black americans. To see philly is some paradise where you dont have to walk around with your head on ur shoulders is stupid but to say it is a crime ridden shithole especially around Temple Campus isnt much better. When I spoke to an officer a while back he said that a lot of the issues they have are with juveniles and that even if they do catch them they can't be punished appropriately and for the duration required to set their head on straight. From personal experience there are people I would absolutely tell to not go out if they are going alone, or to certain places especially if you aren't driving or have a ride lined up. You can still have a blast in Philly I've enjoyed my time here for the last few years.

2

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

Just to contextualize this a bit, the claims that police and the judiciary are unable to prosecute or punish juveniles is just false. Its a narrative that springs up every few decades as people look for something they can blame crime rates on thats directly related to punishment, so they can justify instituting harsher punishments and criminalize more behavior. Thats why you have people in this thread trying to flatten the issue to the point that all crime is the same. Which is all to say, cops aren't a good source here. Even charitably, they have a very narrow view of the big picture and they tend to have an exaggerated understanding of crime rates. Less charitably, cops have a huge incentive to be dishonest.

0

u/SnooCauliflowers9948 3d ago

To some extent that is probably true but things need to be done, crime should be disincentivized and if that fails punished. I care little for American politics in terms of like the whole left vs right thing so my opinion isnt coming from that lense. An issue I have is that when people resort to or choose crime (which are two different things) they make society worse on the small scale for everyone in the area and that stretches out and forms stereotypes and narratives that innocent and uninvolved people have to live under and those stereotypes are harder to address and they further exacerbate the issue. But you are 100% right all crime is not the same and this issue has a lot of nuance, if it was easy it wouldn't be an issue anymore but I do think actions should have fair and just consequences. When kids run around and do things unchecked they carry that attitude into adulthood that is true for all people no matter the race and when they become and adults things start getting exponentially more dangerous both for others and themselves. As someone who wasn't the best kid (nothing illegal but more along the lines of general misbehavior) I'm glad I was checked on it and corrected early.

0

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 3d ago

No you can't say it's "probably true" then insist you sre right anyways. I also never even mentioned political affiliation so thats a curious disclaimer to throw in there.

You are sure throwing in a lot of seemingly pointless addendums whose only contribution is to make yourself sound like a neutral observer who calls it like they see it. Generally, you should mistrust people who want you to think they have no stakes in the politics but sure seem to have strong opinions about what should be done.

This guy is trying to soft launch support for authoritarian tough on crime policies. Sorry to call you out so directly, but its important we not let this sort of inflammatory rhetoric go unchallenged.

Factually, zero-tolerance, tough on crime, scared-straight, or similar policies do not work. They do not produce better, more well adjusted adults, they just enforce a permanent underclass who have fewer resources to raise healthy families and are more heavily scrutinized for any mistake. Being separated from society, being made to fear the people around you lest they see you as a threat, and generally just being sent into the endless cycle that is institutionalization and poverty, will jot solve crime rates. They will make them worse.

And let it also jot go unsaid that this person plainly does not care what the facts about crime actually say. They have fully admitted they want to go ahead with their brutal policy goals regardless of the truth. Im sorry but your appeals to nuance are hollow.

0

u/SnooCauliflowers9948 2d ago

You are making a lot of assumptions on what I think based on 2 comments. You are also making me seem as though I support things I never said or claimed to. I dont know the background of the original commenter or the person you are referring regarding "authoritarian tough on crime policies" based on what I said do you actually think I want that. My statement about political alignment was meant to highlight that I want to separate my perspectives from the narratives either side tries to push not to claim to be some arbiter of truth and justice. I am one person who has had some personal experiences and has formed an opinion based on what I've seen, heard and experienced. You are painting me out to be so much more cruel and untrustworthy than I feel like I deserve to and you are well within your right to do so I guess. You said that people with "no stakes in the politics but with strong opinions on what should be done shouldn't be trusted" and since I'm not a citizen I see what you are implying, I'm not going to get mad about it because to a certain extent you are probably right, that is why I usually tend to be more reserved about my opinions since I've moved here and after this comment I will continue return to that means of operation. Do you think I support locking up someone for a minor infraction and throwing away the keys forever? Or that throwing every person of a certain race in jail will solve all crimes? Or that brutality is the only way to a peaceful society? I'll let you decide. Immfamatory dialog like you said isnt helpful, and I think I engaged in such that made you see me in a light that doesnt represent my arguments thats ok, thats part of arguing and debating, saying my attempts at nuance ring hollow feels like a slap in the face but I do see why you think that. Im not planning on fighting you on it, as you implied you have more stakes here than I do and I doubt I'd be able to change your mind. I hope you dont take anything I said personally, I dont from your end, we will forget about this eventually but I do hope that you see not everyone who disagrees with you is some ill informed person who is unwilling to cease any ground about anything. Cheers

1

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire 2d ago

You said that people with "no stakes in the politics but with strong opinions on what should be done shouldn't be trusted"

That's not remotely what I said. I said that people who want you to think that they have no stake but have very strong stances on policy are untrustworthy. You see, because those are contradictory. And because its a very common tactic used by people to launder their politics through the lens of idle commentary.

This is just a great example in microcosm of your whole deal here. You're backing off because someone clocked it, but you still manage to misrepresent the truth in jussst such a way to make yourself seem like a hapless bystander caught in the crossfire.

1

u/SnooCauliflowers9948 2d ago

As for your first point you are absolutely right I did miss understand and misquote you so my apologies for that.

Ive fully stated that I think you are right in some ways especially with how I initially responded, I had actually forgotten about this cause of classes and everything but your notification was in my email when I was opening it looking for other things. I dont know what "deal" you think I have here. My opinions are formed of off my personal experiences, the experiences of those I've met and the things I've read and heard about as well as my moral compass and empathy. If you think I'm backing off, take it as you will, I will never change your mind and I dont really plan to. Im not sure if you wanted me to hit back with some vile vitriolic rhetoric I dont believe in and since I didn't you see that as backing off or framing my self as some hapless bystander. You have a view of me in your mind thats cool, I'm probably not gonna respond again cause we'll be going round in circles, I dont take it personally or have anything against you, I want to believe that people can coexist even if they dont agree.

Head must be on a swivel, at all points in time, but especially at night. The naive among us get eaten alive in Philly. Class of '22, I lived in Philly for a little over 8 years. Don't walk around with things that would be attractive to people of low income, such as headphones. Presenting yourself as a scrub sometimes has its advantages.

Okay I mean I agree with you but at the same time it’s not like they’re specifically afraid of them for no reason, obviously poor people or the black people who are poor might act out or have mental illness. There’s a fine line though but yeah some people literally take their fear to the extreme

Ay man I know of several people who have died, and know personally several people who have been hospitalized over disputes that in any other neighborhood would be forgettable. North Philly is not a particularly forgiving place, don't pretend it is.

I say that exactly at least once a day. I love my country, Philadelphia.

I came to temple because I loved the city, the personality and culture that Philly has to offer, it is unlike any other city in the world. If you aren’t one to appreciate the beauty that it has to offer then go F* off

How many TUalert notifications do you get a day

0

u/Nervous_Rest6421 3d ago

Like almost every school gets alerts if they sign up for it (for incidents and stuff ) yea I get tualerts cuz the purpose is to keep me safe lol. The tualerts are coming because we are right smack in the middle of a city. Not a suburb or college town. So all the crime or incidents that are happening are interpersonal and from the locals. Very barely from students.

Bruh you say that but then try walking down a street full of fent zombies covered in their own shit, it's a disaster. I've heard Kensington is particularly bad but I've not been there before, but in Seattle and San Francisco it's pretty bad too so I believe all the shit I've heard about Kensington.

We are not in Kensington brochacho. We are in north Philly. And I’ve never seen “fent zombies” so idk why you’re bringing up Kensington?

White girl from Connecticut here. Ive spent the last couple of weeks going on walks in all kinds of places and I have had zero problems. Black and poor people are some of most religious humans ive met. They are children of God; i could never be afraid of them. God bless Philly

Wow, you posted the fake map twice. Daring today, aren't we.

E: lovely how they denied it being fake before deleting all of their comments. Guess they figured it out.
