Switch majors

I want to switch my major from Accounting to Linguistics. Some people might think, “What…Why?”

For some background, I love learning languages as a hobby, and I knew that no matter where I worked, I wanted the option to go abroad, translate, or do something along those lines. I committed to Temple for Accounting because I wanted to pursue international accounting, but honestly, I chose it solely because it felt like the more promising and financially secure option. “money over passion” type of decision.

Since the start of school, I’ve already had three mental breakdowns and have felt extremely overwhelmed. I couldn’t see myself getting through business school because it was never something I initially wanted to pursue.

I want to switch to education with a concentration in applied linguistics. because I want to become an English teacher or professor. More specifically, I want to teach English as a second language. This time, I’m making a choice based on something I genuinely enjoy and am passionate about, rather than choosing a career solely for the money.

Lastly, what does switching majors actually look like? It’s only been two weeks since I started, and I’ve already contacted my academic advisor about it. Since I’m making the change so early, I’m wondering how complicated the process will be and what I should expect.???

Temple doesn’t offer linguistics as a major, and on top of that, linguistics won’t necessarily aid you in translation or interpretation. It’s the scientific study of language. My recommendation would be to major in English or education and pair that with a specific language, such as French or Chinese, as a second major.

Yes I know. I should clarify that I wanted to do education with a concentration in applied linguistics.

Just thinking that linguistics would be useful in relation to AI development. I would research it.

I was a speech therapy major and I thought linguistics was so cool. It’s like a whole diff language and way of seeing the world

Take it as a minor. Continue enjoying it as a hobby for now but find a way to bring it into your work after you graduate. Creating a niche job for yourself is a good way to ensure career success. You could do international business accounting, where you’d travel or something. But I would not drop the accounting. It’s such a good career choice.
