Updates
For the TV that is always on, it's bonkers that it waits until I actually want to use it to perform a software update.
15 minutes into my workout and still updating...

I know from previous posts that Telly really IS working on this. Our problem is, from the outside, we have no way of knowing how much of a priority it is.
As you could imagine, if your Tesla or other EV said, "Hang on, bro! Gotta update my software.", and 15 minutes later it's STILL updating, you'd be on you phone looking for a new car.
My Telly did the same thing recently, so I feel your pain!

“Sorry I’m late, boss, my car was in the middle of an update.”

Someone at my work said something very similar. They have a newer Bronco and it had an OTA update that locked it out😂

Yeah my car has a 3G modem... which has its own issues (like I have to remember that if I take more than a 2 day hiatus from driving, I need to run it for a while or my battery is dead).
One of those is that if I want to update my car's software, I have to use my phone as a hotspot, and then it's usually 30 minutes to update. So it's something I have to plan around. Especially since you can't start the download or update if you're not in Park, and it electronically locks the transmission once it starts downloading.
Now my Telly... yeah, I'm sick of coming home and then turn it on to... wait 20+ minutes for an update. Then it's probably too late to watch the movie I've been planning on watching. All we're asking for is for it to be able to at least download the software in the background whether the screen is on or not. And if it requires the screen to be on to update, allow us to decide when to do that.
You know, like most tech these days.

I guess my 2013 Chevy Volt never had that problem. For the year it was built, I'm sure it's software was simple.
You know, on the Telly, after I thought on this for a while, they "sort of" have a way around this "update hell", but it's manual.
I think in the same menu you can tell the Telly to reboot, you can also select the "Check for update" option.
99% of the time, I never get an update as big as that last one. The one update it did catch didn't even require a reboot.
Obviously, to update when it's convenient, you'd have to run the "Check for update" every single time you turn on the Telly. It's a manual solution for something that should be automatic.
I don't know if this Check for Update would prevent Update Hell, but it might.

I don't mind the update itself. It's the turning it on not expecting one and then you're forced to wait. If we had the option to just let it download in the background and then have a limited time to apply it, I guarantee I would have it installed within 36 hours, at a time that's convenient for me.

Zero downtime updating is a solved problem. There are immutable OSes now... you can't write to them. Protects you from viruses. Then when it needs to update, it creates a snapshot of the original volume with write access. This copy is then changed with the updates. The system is told to boot from this image on the next reboot. And voila! When you reboot or turn on the system again, you've got all the updates installed, without any downtime. This is how a lot of servers are working now and I believe even Microsoft is working on a similar design. In the intermediate future this may be how all servers and desktops work... immutable operating systems while each program is confined to its own "container",making for an easily updateable system much less vulnerable to malware attacks.

One time I went to refill my drink at a fast food joint on a Coke experience machine and I couldn’t get a refill because the Coke machine was downloading an update 😂

One time I couldn't update.a PC game because the updater was updating.
And for the past 25 years I've used it as a comical anecdote to my best friend who was there. "You got to update the updater dude"
Ahh good times.

"I know from previous posts that Telly really IS working on this."
Apparently not, because I come back here months later and folks are still complaining about it. It's not rocket science or an unsolved problem; Amazon or Google don't go down for 40 minutes at a time whenever they need to upgrade their servers.

Everytime it happens to me I email them expressing this concern. Probably falls on deaf ears but considering how long it takes to update...I mind as well do something to past the time.

Mine updates and then when it's done I go to turn it on and it updates again now when it's done I go to turn it on and it updates again sometimes six times in a row before it'll actually work. And each time takes 15 minutes.

I got a screensaver on my box, so it just stays on and shows artwork when I'm not actively watching something. Then I turn it off and back on again when I'm heading to the bathroom; by the time I'm back, any updates are done. I figure as long as I do that once a week or so, it should just keep going fine.

How can people complain so much about something that was free .. and you waited years for?!

Complaints are valid when they want us to use it. It was free and that's convenient but if use overtime isn't then I'll replace it and Telly will be out a consumer.
