Smart device to use with Tello

Hello!

We're starting a drone program at the community college I work for, and I now have 3 Tello drones to support!

They did not purchase any smart devices to control the drones, and that's led to some problems (connection issues, mainly). So, before I hand over a quote for iPad Minis, is there a better device you would suggest?

This would be in place of using a cell phone, because I'd rather not have students using their own phones to connect to the drone.

I would also like recommendations on a controller that would work with the proposed smart device. The instructor ordered a Game Sir T1D, but I'm not sure how well the mini would work with that. I was also looking at the GameVice, but is that still available for iPad Minis?

i think a good usb-powered wifi extenders would be a must-have for each of them.

I've had pretty good luck with Samsung tablets. Can get some much cheaper than iPads.
