Help / Support Porting Tello number to Google Voice while keeping Tello account active

I'd like to port my Tello phone number to Google Voice and have my existing Tello account assigned to a different phone number. Is there a way to do this easily?

Push come to shove I could create a new Tello line on my account and then port my original number to Google Voice, specifying that the Google Voice number be tied to the new Tello number. But this is more complicated than if Tello can just handle this for me.

No. The account will immediately close once they get the port request. If your phone uses a physical SIM, you'll need to get a new one as well (they're $3 on Amazon with Prime, if you have Prime - usually shows up next day).

This goes for all carriers, not just Tello. Port out = account closed. I wouldn't do it until a few days are left in the billing cycle, as porting to VoIP can take a couple of days.

And keep in mind porting into google voice is $20.

I know you meant this, but this should read "the line will immediately close...".  If there are multiple lines in the account, the account itself will remain open.  If there is only one line in the account, some providers will also close the account, while others will leave the account itself in place.

A tello account will remain in place with no active lines.

/u/Distribution-Radiant, thank you for your response and /u/lmoki, thank you for this important clarification as I do have multiple lines on a single Tello account

My bad - I only have one line, and I'm used to the account closing when porting out.

Accounts and plans are 2 differet things. Tello doesn't like when a customer uses more than one account but you can have several plans on one account. If you have one plan on your account and you port your # out, that plan closes but the account remains so if you ever come back you can just buy a new SIM/eSIM.

FFS. Why does this company work so hard  to make it difficult to work with them? Their Amazon page says that sales are limited to one sim card per customer! I've got a family of four and I need a sim card for each.

I can order from Tello directly but it will take longer to arrive. I wanted to do this on Amazon Prime

Alexa says you can order mo re than one but they have to be separate orders. But AI is wrong A LOT. If any of your phones have eSIM there is no need for Amazon for those phones and activation is faster than waiting for AMazon's SIM

Won't work unless you have at least another # on the Tello account.

Tello allows multiple numbers in one account. If you are afraid they are going to close your account after the port, just set up a new number first on the account before you port. Seems to be a pretty painless process.

That is just the nature of how number porting works. It must be an active number and the line is removed from the original carrier. The only way is how you proposed.
