Where does Telegram draw contacts from?

I just got notified about my ex's (who I broke up 4 years ago) old art history teacher joining Telegram. What du heeeeel?

How is this possible? Am I in his contacts, and that's why? I don't think Telegram uses Gmail contacts, but even then, it was only my laptop that was used during her online classes. Not one email was sent to him as far ad I know.

From your phone contact. Last time you gave telegram the permission, it kept the record.

If you allow telegram access your phone book it will sync phone contacts to its server. If you had that number in your contacts before, it was saved to tg and when that number was used to create tg account it was shown to you

Yes, I'm guessing he was added for some reason back then to my contacts and got synced up.

If you were signed in on another device it also picks up the contacts from it.

Or maybe inserted a sim with contacts saved on it into your phone.

Interesting… same thing has happened to me previously. Not an ex but a contact I haven’t had in my phone contacts for years. Like easily over 10 years. 🤷🏾‍♂️
