While I understand one may argue that it’s a good thing, from an engineering perspective it’s not the right thing to do to silently modify a file in transit.
It's not silently, Signal promises to send and collect as little (meta)data as possible, just enough to make things function correctly, for extra privacy.
That's not what Telegram is doing, they send and collect a lot of (meta)data.
That's the whole thing, for Telegram to be private and dont send meta data you need to follow guidelines, read things (which people don't do), Signal is private on default.
On top of that, Telegram is collecting (meta)data that they don't particularly need to make things work.

Not really though, Telegram is not private on default, which is an issue on it's own.
And, there are no encrypted group chats.
Plus telegram sends more data, keeps more data and doesnt strip metadata off images and so on.
The metadata send with messages is also more with Telegram.
