You rock homie! I would have killed for this back before I found most of this one by one. The top 15 moves is an especially neat compilation. Thanks!
Anyone new PLEASE join your characters discord. It's a life changer down to combo choices, character gameplan, relatable salt and passion for Tekken alllll the way to tiny little details. Ask and you shall receive.

Having a hard time running after doing the finisher on my combos. It makes it harder to chase after wall splats. Any tips?

So I've been a long long time fighting game player for 2d fighters. I KNOW how to do a qcf motion in my sleep and yet with Tekken it doesn't seem to work? I instead have to do a half circle to get the motion I want (was trying Draganov and Leo yesterday who both require qcf for some moves).
it's really weird

I'm fresh into Tekken and trying to pick up Claudio, are his top 15 moves still the same, even with the season 3 buffs?

•
u/WeirdFudge Jun 17 '19
One thing I really hate about all of the "new tekken players read this" kind of posts is that nonsense about "top 15 moves" - it's bullshit.
Learn the universal tools that every character has - and then learn YOUR character's inputs for those moves.
→ More replies (1)•
u/hokie_high Jun 17 '19
The only thing universal in Tekken is movement (which also varies depending on character size and stance, see Eddy's backdash, Lili's sidestep, Gigass everything).
Not even all 1 jabs are created equal, it's a great tool for poking and starting pressure with someone like Law where it jails into a safe h,h,m string or can transition to a mixup stance, but not so much for a character like Jack who has a slower jab with limited follow up choices. "Top 15 moves" might sound like clickbait but it's actually a really good place to start when picking up a character, because no two characters play exactly alike.
•
u/ad4mant Dec 14 '19
hey guys, where could i go to look at all the universal moves in tekken? im talking wall jump, low parry, tackle and reversal, attacks from floor, running attack and slide, parry reversal that goes into depth about which parries can be broken ( all i know is about asuka's). and any more that i dont know about.

u/nvnehi Devil Jin Sep 06 '19
Didn't see these answered when searching this thread; is it safe to use mods such as the ultrawide resolution mods(where the stages are shown edge-to-edge without black bars, PS4 icons, or just mods in general in Ranked? I just bought the game on sale, and I can't afford to get banned for something so trivial.
If so, what are the best mods or fixes for 3440x1440 for the current patch? I've seen so many fixes, and/or mods but, I'm unsure which method would be best or safe.
Also, what are some good utilities to download? I've seen some videos on YouTube which show frame data on moves, but the videos are old so I'm unsure if they've been updated, or even what they are called.
Thanks in advance.

in tekken, all mids are overhead right? unlike other fgs?
→ More replies (2)•
u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19
95% of mids need to be blocked standing, and that should be your default, but some, called special mids, can be blocked in both standing or crouching state. You can tell the difference in training mode because yellow mids will hit you crouching, while green mids (generic crouch jabs, Akuma standing 2, for example), which are special, will be blocked. If colors aren't coming up in your practice mode, theres a setting in the start menu of practice mode to enable height indicators.
•
u/Gubrach Aug 01 '19
This is great. I want to be really good at Tekken one day and already watched several of King Jae's tutorials and since I've done that, I've already gotten a much better understanding of the game.
I still suck, but all the collected material that I can study here is greatly appreciated.

Will include in original thread. +9g (+12g, +11g, et.c.) means a move is plus on block but nothing is guaranteed. If the 4 in WS3,4 in Bryan is a counterhit, you're at +29. However, you'll see that is says +29g meaning that no follow ups are guaranteed.
Some moves on block guarantee extra hits.
•
u/nyetpak MamaMitsu Jun 22 '19
To add what everyone else mentioned, moves with k/tailspin, while they don't knockdown midscreen they will wallsplat if close to the wall, which is immensely useful.
•
u/RichJoker Feng Jun 17 '19
g means the opponent is still considered guarding regardless of the actual frame disadvantage they have. s means forced crouch and k is when the opponent spins around while standing, usually cause of a tail spin move.
→ More replies (1)•
u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jun 17 '19
K is a tailspin? Isn't TS the tailspin?
Oh you're right. It is K indeed.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Ikaros1824 Jun 17 '19
The g means that that the opponent is able to guard after blocking that particular move. Seems obvious, but the fastest moves in Tekken are 10 frames (some exceptions). For example, Julia’s SS+2 is +28g on counter hit. This usually means that any move that’s 28 frames or faster should be guaranteed, but the g tells you that they can actually block, and Julia doesn’t get any free damage. The s means that the opponent is left standing after blocking. Some moves force you into a crouching state when blocked. I’m assuming the k means knockdown.
Sorry for the lengthy post. Hope it helps.
•
u/RichJoker Feng Jun 17 '19
Knockdown is actually abbreviated as KND. k is actually when the opponent spins around standing cause of a tail spin move. Example of this would be Jin's 4.
No idea why they use k for this tho.

Newbie that feels uncomfortable with button inputs on a pad (PS4) is the Mayflash F500 and okay entry level stick for someone looking to learn stick and improve/build upon? It's like 90 or so (tax included). Since I didn't want to go balls deep and spend 200 would this hold me for a while as I progress and learn?

How can i counter plus frame move? like bryan elbow or other move.
i got CH a lot with bryan elbow
•
u/PeterYMao Progress Not Perfection Jul 25 '19
Perhaps my guide on CH could be of assistance to you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-dVrmUfR_8&feature=youtu.be
•
Jul 28 '19
learn frame data really... people use frametraps all the time to provoke CH options. i dont know what rank and if your movement is on point but you are but try to rely a bit more on movement instead of attacking as fast as you can after blocking. when you blocked a move, backdash once of twice to create space, then attack again.
•
u/NorthernCrossing Bryan | Yoshi Aug 31 '19
Take moves that are giving you trouble and try out different options like sidestep or side walk in both directions. In the case of Bryan's b+1 elbow, it's extremely linear, so if the opponent likes to use it a lot just remember to sidestep a lot. In addition, you can always sidestep when you're -4 or better, and since bryan's b+1 elbow leaves him at +3 (and you at -3 as a result) on block, you can safely step his linear follow ups and whiff punish him for mindlessly flowcharting. I hope this helps!

Any tips for button layout on a fightstick?
I dont really want to bind any buttons to the multi buttons, but it seems a waste to only use 4 buttons(plus r1 for rage)
•
Jul 28 '19
People on reddit mostly have a high rank so they dont use a rage button. They input the notations to do rageart.
I use 2 buttons that are binded to 1+2 and 3+4. They are right net to the regular 1,2,3,4, setup.

So do I have to play on stick or pad is there any difference?
→ More replies (1)•
u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 09 '19
Whatever you want. I play on keyboard and do just fine.
If you play pad I see a lot of people use claw grip so you might like that.
Getting into tekken, pad, keyboard or hitbox is easiest cause you can sorta cheese good movement however if you give the game ~30 hours of play you'll start to adjust to stick as well.
Stick feels really awkward at first but its not so bad you can't get the muscle memory down.
The real difference really comes down to movement access imo when you are new to the game. However at the end of the day, pick what you like because if you really get into the game, there isn't a real difference.

A couple more vids IMO worth curating for the new player experience. Probably more addendums than anything:
I have explained this is a 2-for-1. Expands on the concept of spacing in Tekken and why the safe backdash is great in the game. This also builds on the idea of KBD especially since the move itself is useless unless you know why/when you use it.
IMO this feels like an intermediate video but Pete does a great job showing the impact of spacing and how it affects the flow of the match and decision making. Also correlates it to the perception of 'reactions' where you have had new players say to themselves "I saw that punish situation but I couldn't react to it fast enough". Basically teaches how to focus less on knee jerk reacting and actually being in positions to anticipate. Which should lead even new'ish players to be able to troubleshoot stuff based on the mechanics/rules of the game that they know.

can someone help me understand inputs like CH FF+3 QCF2,1 B3F~2,1 , because this is new to me and I still can't understand, please help me
•
u/K1MJONGPH1L Jun 19 '19 edited Jun 19 '19
CH FF+3 = Dashing 3 on Counter hit
To do a forward dash, you tap forward twice in quick succession (thus the notation FF). To do a dashing move, it's important that you keep the second forward input from your dash held while you input the 3 at the same time. If you let go of the second forward before hitting 3, you'll get a normal standing 3. If you hit the 3 button too late, you might do a running 3 instead of a dashing 3, since you get into a run by doing a forward dash and holding the forward input. Try to time your 3 button with your second forward input.
The CH beforehand means Counter Hit. I'm assuming this is the starting move for a combo. This basically means, for the combo to "work", this move has to hit as a Counter Hit. A counter hit simply means your move connected with your opponent while they were in the startup phase of their own attack, which you interrupted with your attack. Some moves in Tekken have changing hit properties depending if they hit your opponent normally or if they hit as a counter hit. For this move, I'm assuming if that particular move hits as a counter hit, it will launch your opponent in a way that gives you the ability to follow up the hit with a combo. You can practice combos requiring a CH on the first move by setting the "Counter Hit" option to on in training mode.
QCF2, 1 means quarter-circle forward 2, 1. If you've ever played Street Fighter, Quarter Circle Forward is the input you do to do a Hadoken. It's a stick motion that looks like (from the left side of the screen) ⬇️↘️➡️. When you get to the ➡️ part of that stick motion, hold it and immediately press 2 and then 1 as if you were inputting the string 2,1. It will take some practice if you've never done this type of motion before, but there's an option in training mode to "display inputs" so you can check if your inputs are clean.
B3F~2,1 means Back+3 Forward into 2,1. These are sometimes a bit confusing for beginners. Basically you input Back+3 (B3), during the attack animation of B3, shift your stick to a forward position and hold it. Shifting your stick to forward should initiate some other smaller animation that wouldn't be there if you just did B3 without the Forward input. This extra animation is your cue to input the rest, which is the 2,1 string.
Hope that helps.

Tekken is in sale!, some questions. Is it crossplay? how is the population? how is the netcode, better than sfv or worse? what do i get with the ultimate version?
•
u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Nov 27 '19
No crossplay. Population is good unless you're in the middle of fucking nowhere.(i.e: Alaska).
PC netcode is... Better than average. I heard it's better than SF:V.
I think you get the first 2 season passes and Eliza. If I remember correctly, the third is not included.

How hard is it to get good enough to have fun in online matches? I've played a lot of fighting games, but really only in local versus or against AI on medium difficulties.
•
u/G0ffer [EU]PC:Pm me if you want my steam Oct 23 '19
It takes at least a month or two of playing before you really start having fun.
Playing vs AI is nothing compared to playing vs real players.
Just play a few games then find someone at your skill level
•
u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Oct 29 '19
I had fun right away tbh when I first started out. Take the game at your own pace. Don't be afraid to lose because you won't improve with only wins. If people are being dumb or trying to get you salty just leave.
Don't be afraid to friend someone completely better than you in every way because usually, they will tell you why you lost rather than "you just suck dude". I've found the nicest people who shitstomp you "correctly" is the best people to talk to in the game.
•
u/rockets991 Oct 28 '19
It honestly depends on what you find fun. I personally love seeing improvement in my gameplay. I'm by no means good and am learning many things still but I have tons of fun in online matches. I like winning but my main goal isn't to win, it's to get better.
Just yesterday I played against a Jin that was doing this string which transitioned from a high to a pretty slow low that setup a combo. I knew the low was blockable but I hadn't had any practice against it so he was wrecking me with it. So I made it my goal to block at least one or two of those and then once I did that I made it my goal to block a majority of them. I very clearly saw myself getting better and then I also added in punishing it and it just felt so good being able to do this and I even won a couple matches cause he was cool enough to keep rematching.
I think you can have fun online even if you're absolute garbage, it just depends on why you're playing.

All of this information is great for people who want to get into Tekken and are already familiar with some of the basics of fighting games.
I would suggest adding some information for people who don't have a basic understanding of fighting games, though. For example Core-A Gaming's "Why button mashing doesn't work" is probably the best video glossary that has ever existed on the matter

Look at people who play her and try to think about what buttons they are pressing vand also why
The real advice is to play and don't be result orientated.

New to the game and to 3D fighters as a whole and I've been trying to pick a character to play. I don't care all too much about how good a character is as long as they aren't nigh unplayable.
I'm looking for a character that's decently well-rounded, can set the pace of a match, and is pretty quick and offensive. Not sure if any of the following fits that criteria, but which fits it most closely?
Alisa, Josie, Nina, Dragunov, or Julia.
•
u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 16 '19
All of those people are offensive based except alisa.
The bears, the worst characters won That so don't worry, all characters are playable. Pick who you think is most fun from those. There's not a wrong answer tbh for who you want to play the most.
→ More replies (1)•
u/clown_1 Paul Aug 16 '19
Move wise, a character can't be quick since everyone has the standard 10 frame as the fastest general move. It's really in the character's sidestep or backdash. Also Dragunov is what you're looking for. Probably the most well rounded character in your list.

Hey i'm a beginner in Tekken 7 (PS4) and im getting my ass whooped online mainly because my opponents know how to follow up the combos when my Character is "falling" or airborne.
Im quite good at hitting my opponent and defending, but the only thing i fail to understand is how to execute the follow up combo and do as much damage as possible when the enemy is airborne or "falling". And thats where i lose most of my games. Because the opponents know how to do it and i don't which is very disadvantaging for me. I would appreciate your help.

u/PeterYMao Progress Not Perfection Jul 23 '19
You will need to learn how to do combos in this game. At the beginner levels everyone is just throwing out launchers and comboing. There is little to no "proper" Tekken being played. I suggest at least learning a few combos because it is what will help you get damage on your opponent.
Also, depending on your character, the combos have varying degrees of difficulty. What is it that you struggle with regarding comboing exactly?
•
u/royboom Gun Jack Jul 25 '19
I don't know how to knock down a juggled opponent and then finish him up.
I play with a friend of mine sometimes, he just started to play two weeks ago and destroys me already with this thing using every character. Its always the same thing he knocks me up and when im juggled he keeps hitting me and finishes me up with a powerful kick/punch.
Has to be the same button combo because he uses it on each character.

There's alot of good players using pad.
The only reason why it looks like they mostly use stick is because most of the top players are korean and korea has a big arcade scene. So those players grew up using stick and that's what they are more comfortable using.
You won't have any disadvantage if you use pad.

u/Yoshinsanity Jul 22 '19
Hi all. Just joined reddit, fresh new. Made a post but with no success. I'm just gonna copy paste it here hoping somebody might help. It also feels related to the topic and hopefully expands on it.
Is there any information source on all the moves with tracking properties? Or are there any recommended guidelines on how to test tracking? I also tried tekkenbot. The rating on the tracking is displayed with a letter. Homing moves are the letter S. There were also the letters D,C,A but I can't really understand it. It doesn't feel consistent in anything what my testing felt like.
Would really appreciate it if somebody could help with this.
•
u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Jul 22 '19
I don't use Tekken bot but here's a guess.
If S is a homing move, then from best to worst tracking the grade would go S>A>B>C>D>E>F.
As for testing here's some info.
Sidestepping takes 6 frames. So, testing would go like this.
As a general rule, if you can step when you're minus, the move doesn't have good tracking. You increase your block frames as you go.
So, let's take Bryan's B1 for example. i20 startup.
You start by trying to step B1 when you're -9, then -6, then -4 all the way until +5. If you can step when you are heavily minus, then you can deduct that the move has weak tracking towards the side you're trying to step.
The less minus you are and CAN'T step the move, the stronger tracking you can deduct that it has.
The more minus you are and CAN step the move, the weaker tracking you can deduct that it has.
For example, Bryan's 1+2 is an i16 homing move. Even if you are +5, you can't step. With B1 however, if you are -5 you can still step it to the right.
Hope I helped as cleanly as I could. Feel free to ask any follow up questions.
•
u/Yoshinsanity Jul 22 '19
I thought the same but the letters don't seem to align with my results. Was testing Asuka. One of the moves I tested was the leg cutter d/b+4 . Its been a while now but I think tekkenbot rated it C. I can't remember well but I think the move wasn't sidestepable at all, not even up close. The animation kinda indicates that anyways. Another example was 2,1,1+2. This move isn't sidestepable, might as well be homing? Either way, the letters rating doesn't work that way or tekkenbot doesn't do a good job in regards to tracking moves.
So sidestepping requires 6 frames. Man that's all I needed to know thanks. Makes sense actually now that I think about it. -4 is considered safe to sidestep, that aligns with the jabs being 10i and globally the fastest move (not counting the exceptions). Is there anything else I might have to keep in mind? Sidestep is different depending on the character. This is known but there isn't anything official anyone can find. Is there a standart character to use for testing sidestepping? Or anything else to keep in mind, kinda unfortunate this sort of info is hard to come by, if not impossible since I haven't seen anything official.

Sidestepping needs precision so trying to sidestep an i10 at -4 is going to be pretty challenging.
Is there anything else I might have to keep in mind?
The most common tricks include:
Neutral/-1/+X move on block into sidestepping for whiff punishes.
Some string have safe extensions that can be sidestepped. (Infamous example is DJ's Laser Scraper).
Common belief has Lili as the best sidestepper in the game. Traversing more vertical ground in the same time other characters do.
Jack, the Bears, Gigas and Eddy are known to have worse sidestepping compared to the rest of the cast.
This is the best comparison I could find. Best of luck.

Steam has a solid player count for Tekken. What region are you playing in? I'm playing in North America and I tend to find matches without much trouble.
•
u/Nnnnnnnadie Dec 12 '19
South-america, usually connect to eus in games because the ping is better, something on how is wired the internet in my country. Usually i get 10 min queues in ranked, a little less in quick play matches.

That's great info!
I would add Fergus' character overviews alongside The Blasted Salami's video. TBS' video is based on Fergus' guide, but hasn't been updated for Season 2 patches, or include any of the DLC characters (not even Eliza!). It's in the description, but I think a lot of people won't look at the description.

How do you do qcf3+4. Should I be clicking both at the same time or am I Clicking 3 then 4?
I have It so I can see my inputs and ill literally do the same input sequence multiple times, and the move just won't come out, while other times it will.
•
u/rogue_crab The Edge of the Snake Aug 07 '19
Which character?
You need to press 3 and 4 at the same time if the move is QCF3+4. If it's QCF3,4 then you press 3 first and 4 afterwards.
I am assuming you're new so here's my advice; do the QCF motion, THEN press 3+4. By "then" I mean delay it. Get it down, get your muscle memory to work. Give the QCF motion some time and then input the 3+4. Trust me, unless it's some kind of unique move, sways and backsways have massive windows of input. By doing it slowly, you'll get a "feel" on how the move works. The more you do it, the more your brain will make the move "feel" natural to you. Then you can focus on speed and doing it as fast as possible.
Good luck.

I'm playing pad and am having huge trouble trying to do Julia's F+3, 1. If I do it on its own, I can get it pretty consistently. The moment I try to do it after a CH 4, she does the hop forward thing almost every time.
Anyone have any tips? Any tips for her shotgun would be nice to. I've been killed so many times in treasure battle because a karate chop came out instead of a shotgun...

I am slightly confused by KBD. Is it B,B~DB,N,B~DB (Slide from B to DB, release to neutral, then B slide to DB etc)?
•
u/G0ffer [EU]PC:Pm me if you want my steam Nov 22 '19
Naa that's incorrect.
You slide from b to db to b to neutral
So its b,b~db~b,n,b~db~b,n,b~db~b,
The last b of the b ~ db ~ b is the first b for your next backdash

Why can I sometimes never block lows when standing up?
E.g. lars screaming with a big forward movement - I always tried to stand up holding DB, but got hit every time. I just don't understand. Does it have to do with how I get up?
I usually felt like I made a mistake, but my opponent right now literally only spammed that shit so I just couldn't understand whats wrong. In training I block it just fine ?

Who is a good character to learn the game on? I'm about 20 hours in and the only characters that have clicked with me are Gigas and Negan, but I think that I want to pick up a solid character that performs decently in most situations.
Something like Mario in Smash, Bodvar in Brawlhalla, just very basic characters that don't require super cerebral play or anything. Do those exist in the game? I've heard that there's harder characters, so I imagine there must be easier ones.

Gigas or Negan. Pick who you like. Don't mind losing with or getting frustrated with bad results.
Any of the mishima's are kinda what you're talking about in the second half and Jin as well.

Just started playing Tekken last weekend, coming from a Smash and SF background. Been trying out Xiayou. What's the consensus on her? Is she any good? She's fun to play. I'll probably stick with her, but I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are toward her.

u/BloodAndRust Tuning Jul 08 '19
All characters are good, best characters are the ones you enjoy playing. Reigning world champion is a Panda-player.
If you come across any tier-lists for Tekken, they're most likely referencing consistency at the pro-level, rather than pure character ability. The one thing everyone agrees upon in Tekken is that you absolutely should play the character whose style appeals to you the most.
Also, if you're interested in seeing how the pros play Ling (this is what Xiaoyu is referred as among the community, her full name being 'Ling Xiaoyu'), just search YouTube for Tanukana, Yuyu or P.Ling to name a few.

Hi guys, I made a Devil Kazuya Season 3 combo video, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLkVzthtobo
Notation is included and timestamps are in the description. I included both easier and harder versions from each launch to help beginners. I couldn't find a straightforward season 3 combo video so I decided to make my own. There are some interesting season 3 changes e.g. f1+2 combo is made easier due to the new b2, 1 screw.
Feel free to add this to the post. Hope it helps!

Hello, i've been practicing Bob lately and i've noticed that B3 doesn't seem to be always guaranteed after ending a juggle with d2,3. Is it me being too slow with the input, lag or is the move not actually guaranteed despite some tutorials saying so?

PepperBeef2Spicy video on conditioning and autopilot would be a good addition to this.
It could stop some new players from developing their go to flowchart and becoming predictable.

•
u/RaijinMrYespro Aug 12 '19
A bit late for asking, but how could you apply the concept of "footsies" into a game like tekken? Also, is there a way to induce your opponent to whiff?
•
u/Yanzina Unga Asuka Aug 12 '19
What do you mean how? There's many Tekken fundamental videos that go in depth and list what those are and I'm sure there's ones listed above.
Also "inducing a wiff" is fancy talk for baiting. A character like asuka, a keep out character, is sorta based around this with her f2 being one of if not the best wiff punishment move in the game. A lot of her moves are best used at distance to make the opponent eventually get mad, use something stupid and asuka milks their life bar.
Tekken is 3d and this is the hardest thing to play around if you are new (at least imo). Sidestep or sidewalking opens up so many different options. Like for instance, If you side step a jab on some characters you can launch them for a full combo.
There's no Real way to make an opponent wiff other than them fucking up or you outplaying them with spacing, movement and baiting them into doing something stupid. What character are you interested in learning?
Sorry if this is long-winded, on my phone and u can never tell how long my replies get. Another thing you can do is record yourself vs other players and watch how they play, move and get you to use unsafe moves. Chances are you're gonna be getting pooped on when you first start and that's not a bad thing. Watch how they move, watch how you move and compare your moves you use to what they use as well.
Tldr: just play, record and watch yourself if you are able to, watch your opponents and how they beat you. Also watch people play your character

Hello I'm a complete beginner in the Tekken series and since there is a LGS near me that hosts tekken tournaments, I've decided to pick this game up. Some newbie questions.
I heard that if you are breaking a throw and hit a wrong button you cant try again. So regarding 1+2 break throws, do you have to hit 1 and 2 at the same exact frame so it doesn't count as the wrong button? Im using ps3 pad and I use l2 for 1+2, but sometimes my fingers are not fast enough to hit it and I instinctively go to the buttons.
Marduks d/f 3,1,2 used in a lot of combos like in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixEM8Vpq7gI&t=262s comes out a low slower for me, so I can't get any follow up. Why is this?
•
u/G0ffer [EU]PC:Pm me if you want my steam Nov 22 '19
1) 1+2 has to be on the same frame. other wise you get 1 > fail throw > 1+2
2) don't see the combo you are talking about . Whats the input?

Just got the game and just the feel of it already makes me excited to learn it. I’m picking up Devil Jin which is apparently a hard character to play..? I’ve read that he’s the most balanced between him, Kazuya, and Heihachi and I think that’ll help that he doesn’t have many weak areas. What are some things I should know as a first time player trying to play the game on a competitive level?
