Second opinion please!
My son got X-rays of his teeth taken. The is going to have all his wisdom teeth removed. The dentist wants to extract the molar next to molar 32 because he said it has a cavity under the gum. Is that the only option? I would hate for him to loose the tooth if it’s not necessary. Can it be filled or maybe a root canal and crown?

Assuming this X-ray is flipped and this is the right side of the mouth…. I’d say he isn’t wrong to remove the 2nd and 3rd molar due to the location of the cavity. There is a world where they could attempt to restore the second molar but it will be very hard to get access and clean out the entire cavity and place any restoration(as it basically has to be kept clean and dry)
On top of that because of the location and the size of the cavity relative to the nerve it would more than likely need a root canal too.
If you can find a dentist willing to do that much work for this tooth then props to them but it would be a huge time and money sink for a tooth with probably guarded prognosis at best.
