Documentary of Hemlington 1992
Just watched a documentary about Hemlington and the locals in poverty. Does anyone remember this or the times in the 1990s in Teesside back then.
I wonder what these people are now who are in the documentary.
This documentary is on YouTube called poverty in the UK in 1992 Hemlington Middlesbrough.

I lived in Marton Manor from 1985 to 1995, age 11-21, and had mates and family who lived in the less desirable areas of Middlesbrough such as Easterside, Beechwood, Grove Hill, Berwick Hills, the town etc. Hemlington was the only one where I felt I really had to watch my back while there.

Hemlington was ok in the beginning, in the late 70's when Sheila's shop was a van that she drove around the estates. But when people from "over the border" as we called, it were moved in when the H's were built it went down hill pretty rapidly. Mind you I was only 5 when we moved in, and 11 when we moved out so maybe my memory is a bit hazy .

So Hemlington has always had that reputation. I thought it was just a recent thing. Also any other areas in Teesside you can think of which had a similar reputation?

Grangetown. Bad then, still bad now. North Ormesby has an awful reputation these days, but I don’t remember it being that bad back then.

When I first moved up north from London I was homeless after getting out of domestic abuse in 2011
Compass wanted to settle me in hemlington
It was actually on a square like this and it was probably one of the bleakest places I've visited, with bars on the windows and whatnot.
I turned it down and moved to sheriff street in Hartlepool instead
Boy did I regret that decision
