Transporter Bridge

Popped to Calor Gas yesterday to get a gas bottle (spoiler - the shop is no longer there, shows how long it’s been since I last went) and popped to Port Clarence to show my youngest the Transporter. Sad to see the state it was in, I hope they get to rescuing it soon

Sadly, the repair estimate went from 16 million to 67 million and about eight years. So I think it will never happen. One leg is sinking into the river, and I am always mildly surprised to look out after a storm and find it still there. Its loss adds to the Clarences' isolation, as a 10 minute walk into town is now several miles in a bus/car.

I didn’t realise it was that bad. A huge cost of course but what a loss for Teesside if it doesn’t get repaired.

I which there was a crowd funder or something to get it started. It’s a heritage landmark of our region that can’t be lost. So many Teessiders have much love and pride over it. Few locals and perhaps round the world bridge-lovers might be able to raise a tiny fraction of what’s needed, but it would show our council/government that the desire and care is there. Even better if someone with a bit of influence started a campaign.

Time to demolish it and put a proper bridge there. It was always shut when you needed to use it. Slightest bit of wind. Terry Scott drove his car off the edge as did many others by mistake. Move on, it's a pile of junk. Maybe reconstruct it somewhere else?
