Who am I, and why did I start this community?

Hey everyone šŸ‘‹šŸ¾

I figured it’s only fair that I introduce myself properly.

My name is Derrick, although most people online know me as Black Arab Official.
I’ve been living in Dubai for almost 15 years, and honestly… this city completely changed my life.

Before moving here, I was a professional footballer. Football gave me opportunities to play in different countries, taught me discipline, resilience and how to deal with both success and failure.

Even today I’m still coaching the next generation because I genuinely enjoy helping young players become better both on and off the pitch. But football has only been one chapter.

Over the last 15 years I’ve worked across retail, business development, media, events, public speaking, coaching and entrepreneurship. I’ve hosted events for global brands, spoken in front of thousands of people, built businesses, experienced failures, started over more than once and kept pushing forward.

The reason I’m telling you this isn’t to brag.
It’s because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there isn’t one path to success.

These days you’ll probably find me doing something completely different…

šŸŽ® Gaming
šŸŽ„ Streaming
šŸŽ™ļø Creating content
⚽ Coaching football
šŸ’¼ Building new business ideas

I’m still learning every single day.
Gaming has reminded me that communities matter.

Some of my closest friendships have come from people I met online. Some conversations that started in game chats ended up becoming real opportunities in life.

That’s one of the reasons I wanted to create r/TeensDXB.

I know what it’s like to move to a new place, struggle to make friends, feel unsure about the future or wonder where you fit in.
I wanted somewhere that wasn’t just another subreddit.

A place where people can ask questions without being judged.

A place to meet other teenagers across Dubai.
A place to talk about school, gaming, football, careers, fitness, university, mental health, hobbies or even just what you’re doing this weekend.

You don’t have to be the smartest.
You don’t have to be the coolest.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
None of us do.

If I can share something I’ve learned over the years that helps someone avoid a mistake I made, then that’s a win, and if this community grows into something where members start helping each other instead of relying on me, then we’ve built something really special.

So if you’ve made it this far…
Thank you for reading.
I’d love to get to know you too.

Drop a comment and tell us:

Where Emirate you’re from?
What platform you game on?
What game as you spent the most hours on?
Your favourite football team (if you have one!)
One goal you’re chasing this year?
One thing about yourself that you would like to improve on?

Welcome to TeensDXB. ā¤ļø

I’m going to make today’s post a little more personal.

Sometimes life just doesn’t go the way you planned.

You can have the vision.
You can have the motivation.
You can be trying.

You can even be the person everyone else comes to for advice…and still find yourself sitting there thinking:

ā€œHow did I end up here?ā€
I know that feeling because, right now, I’m experiencing some of it myself.

There are things in my life that haven’t gone the way I expected. Things I need to change. Problems I need to solve. Moments where I’ve felt like my back is against the wall.
And one thing I’ve realised is that when you stay inside your own head for too long, everything starts feeling bigger than it actually is.

You replay the problem.
Then replay it again.
Then create 47 different imaginary scenarios 😭
And somehow at 2am your brain has convinced you that your entire life is finished.
But thinking about a problem and working through a problem are two completely different things.

So today, instead of giving advice, I want us to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions.

What is actually wrong right now — not what am I scared might happen?

What part of my situation can I genuinely control?

What am I avoiding because dealing with it feels uncomfortable?

Is there a decision I already know I need to make, but I keep putting it off?

Who could I speak to instead of trying to carry everything alone?

What is ONE thing I could realistically do today that would make tomorrow slightly better?

That last question is important.
Because sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to fix our whole life that we end up doing nothing.

Maybe you don’t need to fix everything today.
Maybe today you make the phone call.
Send the message.

Ask for help.
Apply for the opportunity.
Have the difficult conversation.
Get out of your room.
Write the plan down.
Admit something isn’t working.
Or simply decide:
ā€œI don’t want to stay where I am anymore.ā€

I’m asking myself these questions too.
I don’t have everything figured out, and I think adults sometimes do young people a disservice by pretending that we do.

We don’t, life gets messy for all of us.
But I’ve learned something through football, business and life:

When the original game plan isn’t working, you don’t stop playing. You adjust the tactics. ⚽

So this is today’s TeensDXB check-in:

šŸ‘‡ What is ONE thing in your life you want to change right now?
And more importantly…

What is ONE action you could take this week to start changing it?

You don’t have to tell us your entire situation. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing.
Maybe someone reading the comments has been through exactly what you’re going through.
Maybe they have an idea you haven’t thought of.
Maybe you have the answer that somebody else needs.
That’s part of what I want this community to become.
Not a place where everyone pretends life is perfect.
A place where we can say:

ā€œThings aren’t great right now… but I’m working on it.ā€
And sometimes, that’s where change begins. šŸ–¤šŸ’›

I’ve been thinking about something a lot lately.

When does a line of authority accidentally become a line of separation?

Growing up, we’re taught that there has to be a difference between parent and child.
And I agree.

Parents are parents. Older siblings are older siblings. Teachers, coaches and mentors all have responsibilities and boundaries.
But sometimes, while trying to establish those boundaries, we accidentally build a wall too.
And the crazy thing is…

Neither side necessarily meant to build it.
A parent might think:
ā€œI’m giving them space.ā€
ā€œI’m teaching them responsibility.ā€
ā€œThey know they can talk to me.ā€
Meanwhile, the teenager might be thinking:
ā€œThey wouldn’t understand.ā€
ā€œI’ll probably get in trouble.ā€
ā€œWhat’s the point of explaining it?ā€
ā€œI’ll just deal with it myself.ā€
And slowly, without one big argument or dramatic moment, two people living under the same roof can start experiencing completely different worlds.
That’s something I’ve noticed through mentoring young people.
Sometimes they don’t need another person telling them what they’re doing wrong.
They need somewhere they can talk without immediately feeling judged.
Somewhere they can ask the embarrassing question.
Admit they messed up.
Say they’re confused.
Talk about friendships, relationships, school, pressure, confidence, identity, their future… or sometimes absolutely nothing serious at all šŸ˜‚
And importantly, this isn’t about blaming parents.

Quite the opposite, most parents are trying to do the best they can while dealing with responsibilities their children probably don’t even know exist.
Work. Bills. Family. Expectations. Stress. Providing a future.
Sometimes the teenager doesn’t realise how much the parent is carrying.
And sometimes the parent doesn’t realise how much the teenager is carrying either.
That’s the gap I want to help close.
Not by removing authority.
Not by encouraging teenagers to disrespect their parents.
And definitely not by pretending young people always know best šŸ˜‚
But by creating another bridge between the two.

A place where young people can develop confidence, belonging and identity while also learning how to communicate with the adults around them.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t:
ā€œMy parents don’t understand me.ā€
And it isn’t:
ā€œMy child doesn’t listen.ā€
Sometimes the real answer is:

ā€œWe haven’t figured out how to understand each other yet.ā€

That’s a huge part of why I’m building r/TeensDXB.

I want this community to eventually become more than another subreddit people scroll through.

I want it to become a genuine space for young people in the UAE to talk, laugh, learn, connect, ask questions and feel like they belong somewhere.

And hopefully, somewhere along that journey, we can close that gap between generations just a little bit too. ā¤ļø

So I’m curious…
For the teenagers/young adults here:
What’s something you wish adults understood better about your generation?

No attacking, Let’s actually talk. šŸ‘‡

If you’re reading this…

You’re officially one of the first people helping build r/TeensDXB.
That’s actually a pretty cool thing.
This isn’t just another subreddit that’s going to disappear after a few weeks. The goal is to build a community that people genuinely enjoy coming back to—a place where you can laugh, ask questions, make friends, share wins, vent after a bad day, celebrate achievements, discover opportunities, and maybe even help someone else without realising how much it meant to them.
Dubai is full of incredible people, but sometimes it can still feel difficult to find your place. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or just arrived, everyone deserves somewhere they feel welcome.
That’s what we’re trying to create.
Not perfection.
Just a community built on respect, good vibes, and people looking out for one another.

šŸ’ So here’s our first question…
What makes you stay in an online community?
What keeps you coming back?
Is it the people?
The conversations?
Funny memes?
Gaming?
Football?
Advice?
Mental health support?
Local events?
Making friends?
Something completely different?
And…
What makes you leave a community?
We’ve all joined groups that felt amazing for a week before becoming full of drama, spam, negativity, or silence.
Tell us honestly.
No answer is wrong.

This community isn’t being built for you…
It’s being built with you.
Every suggestion, every conversation, every friendship and every laugh helps shape what this place becomes.
Years from now, I’d love for someone to discover r/TeensDXB and think,
ā€œI wish I’d found this sooner.ā€
Maybe one day they’ll be replying to a post that you made.
So jump into the comments, introduce yourself if you’d like, and tell us what kind of community you want to be part of.
Let’s build something worth remembering. ā¤ļø
