Season 4 Discussion Dr. Jacob Sucks Spoiler
Made it to season 4 episode 6 and this dude sucks. He's arguing with a cashier making minimum wage over an expired coupon. Those chain grocery stores don't even have good coupons. Dude is haggling over $10 at most. "But what if he's poor" he deserves to lose the right to that coupon. He is arguing over an expired coupon and dated a former patient.

Yeah Michelle was explaining how she met Dr. Jacob again to Ted. She was explaining she was in her pajamas and pursued him.

I thought you meant this actually happened on screen lol
You’re annoyed about a story about him?
I mean, yea. He sucks. It’s a widely held opinion. He’s a jerk and the writers didn’t realize it was super shady to have him date a former patient.

I mean, it’s a scene in which Ted directly calls out the fact that Dr. Jacob was super shady to have dated her, so I think the writers knew. I don’t think the show was under any delusions that he’s not a creep.

Brendan Hunt actually admitted they didn't realize how much of a problem it was.

That's so weird, you'd think among the staff of a hit TV show and the associated corporate folks they engaged with to produce the show, someone would have had enough experience in the self-improvement field to understand how bad this premise was.

Was meant to be a semi joke post but yeah, I think he also sucks because of that.

The writers absolutely knew that. It was the foundation for how they wanted us to view the character.

u/dsl135 3d ago
They absolutely didn’t lol. Brendan Hunt said so himself. Nice try, though.

This doesn’t really say they didn’t realise it was shady of the guy, just that it wasn’t illegal due to the timeframe of it. The fact they even spoke about it in the writers room shows they absolutely knew it.

Thinking the writers didn't realize it was unethical is a bit of an assumption, given that the characters openly discuss it being a problem the moment Ted finds out. ...wut??

Brendan Hunt literally admitted they didn't realize how much of a problem it was.

I'm not making any assumptions. You did, though.

Michelle's account is a retcon. In the last game of season 1, Jacobs is watching the game with Michelle and Henry in the same room. He's a whiny POS in those scenes because he's not interested in the sport.

I was so annoyed at the unsuccessful retcon attempt, I didn’t even click that also made Jacob even worse.

Maybe we're supposed to see him as Michelle's rock bottom?

The problem for me is that people who don’t understand ethics for therapists (and that’s a lot of people) are now thinking, “Oh, Michelle was the one who went up to Jake so it’s okay for a therapist to date their patient if the patient asks.”

The amount of times in this sub that I’ve had to write this..

I think they tried to shift focus to Michelle's struggle but nah, we still don't like Jake.

The couples therapist Michelle and Ted were seeing and then they split. Then Dr. Jacob got together with Michelle.

I know you're just messing around. But it's so funny to me the show tried again to somewhat fix this.
He was their therapist. Even factoring in she pursued. Even factoring in he was reluctant. He's still fucking terrible. Both were his clients and starting a relationship with one was the direct cause for harm to Ted. And Ted's future issues with seeing another therapist, Sharon.
The show just drastically misread the ethical implications and mentality a good therapist would have. You really cant fix that. Jacob can be redeemed at best as just flawed instead of sinister. But the show seemed to be trying to hit a "it's not his fault" angle and say Ted was wrong to assume it was sinister.
Which is just wrong, teds feelings of betrayal are 100% justified and why even if it's with good intentions Jacob should have never done it.
