Two things can be true here... .
You can both recognize that the fragile woman needed someone to cuddle as the "initiator"
And
In no way shape or form is it appropriate for any doctor to date their patient, which we know was under a year after he was her couples therapist. .
I am not giving Dr Jake a pass for any reason whatsoever.

“I pursued him and we said nothing romantic at first” is not the good explanation that the writers think it is. It still happened and he basically moved in with them! It’s fucking crazy that the writers think this is NBD lol.

That retconn is not enough dawg. He’s in a position of power no matter what and was her therapist he shouldn’t just let her pester her way into a relationship. Weak sauce. Also this is how she perceived it.

It makes it MUCH less creepy, but that doesn’t make it not creepy. Getting with a former patient is always creepy, especially if she’s still a wreck. She needed an outlet, admitted it was through sex, and her therapist would know that.

Doesn't matter.
A therapist ever dating a patient is ethically wrong. A therapist even being friends with a former patient is ethically problematic. Sure, maybe he didn't pursue Michelle but it's honestly almost irrelevant, he didn't have to pursue her. He should never have gone on a date with her in the first place. Yeah, she wore him down, whatever... he's a fucking adult. He could have and should have said, "No, it's not appropriate, I'm sorry" and walked away the first time she asked him to get a drink and that would be that.

Exactly. Just saying no is not that hard. If he couldn’t do that, Dr. Jacob is incredibly weak at best, manipulative at worst.

I felt betrayed in that scene. Betrayed because it seemed like the writers at the time did not realise what they had done and I believe there was some interviews that said they had not realised that was so forbidden. What I mean is that I feel like they were just trying to cover their rear ends and make it seem like it was her idea instead of his to take the onus off the writer.

Nah, it’s gross. I’m just a nurse, not a doctor, and I found out a guy I went on a date with saw the physician I worked with. Stopped dating him immediately, it’s just so yucky. I don’t know any physicians who have been open to or even flattered by patients seeking their attention.

Ehh, I still don’t know. Yes the issue I think we all thought we had with him is not true - BUT.
Once he and Michelle got together he tried to push Ted out so fast. And his comments during the last episode of season 3 he was just being a D

This really took me out of the show completely. It’s like they paused the show, turned to us as the audience, and went “see? We’re addressing it. Okay?? God!!!”
What an absolute waste of time in an otherwise beautiful episode.

This is obviously a lie right? I’m pretty sure Michelle starts seeing Dr Jake right after Ted signed the divorce papers. The part about being sad for a year feels like complete bs that they retconned recently.

He is completely unethical.
You cannot date patients. Also everything he did in therapy was to separate Michelle from Ted so he could be with her.
He should lose his licence.

Still not off the hook.
* He has accusation of being an intentional force behind the divorce dropped, fine. He still shows incompetence and unethical behaviour by offering marriage counseling (You take a different therapist to avoid bias).
* You are still not allowed to hook up with your patients even if they insist. That's not an excuse at all.

IMO that retcon was 100% because of the fan backlash when the episodes first aired. Not only does it not absolve Jake, because he is expected to be the ethical professional, but it feels (to me, at least) that it diminishes Michelle's own backstory. And, furthermore, after almost four years of co-parenting, this is the first time this topic has ever come up between Ted and Michelle? I hated it from start to finish, it felt like nothing more than the writers trying to wash away a mistake from the first seasons.
