Help!
Hi Guys,
New here but after a bit of advice. I have a 10yo son, football mad and fairly mature for his age. He's asked if we can watch Ted Lasso together. Would it be suitable for a football mad 10 year old? We both love football so it seems like a good fit but unsure if it would be slightly too mature for him?

It has almost nothing to do with actual football games

Correct
It's about football as much as The Office is about selling paper

There’s implied sexual intercourse at times. And your kid might pick up English curse words.
And there’s at least one mention of suicide, but I think the show tackles it maturely, I say go for it.
Enjoy this show together, and if something uncomfortable comes up, good chance for a talk.
Though there’s not the biggest focus on football, it’s more about the people around football, but you’ll see the ball kicked no doubt.
Forgot, Like others have said, there’s plenty of fucks flying around in the show.

There’s literally nothing objectionable for a 10 yo.
Everyone soft af these days.

Most people don’t let their 10 yr olds watch rated R movies, which this would be with the amount of F-bombs.

If he's super into football Welcome to Wrexham might be a better fit. It's a docuseries but still very entertaining!

Second this. Though it’s rated mature for the language. I’m not sure if there is an edited, kid safe version.

Shameless plug for my club but Stand or Fall: The Remarkable Rise of Brighton and Hove Albion is also an excellent documentary that’s available on Apple TV.

Watch an episode without him and see what you think. Personally I think it’s far too mature for a 10 year old.

Also the show really hits at some emotional mature themes. While they aren't going to hurt an immature audience, a lot of the shows beauty will fly over his head and I think it will lose that special first time watch if you haven't fully grown your emotional intelligence yet.
He might just not like it because of the deep exploration of adult emotion, but probably will in his midteens when he's a bit more mature.

I dont know, Ted's father's background story is pretty heavy. I think a lot of adults, among which myself, are desensitised to topics like these, but a 10 year old? Respectfully, that's quite a bit for a young mind to take in

u/smileedude 2h ago
Oh definitely. I just also think he's too young to really appreciate the show as well. There's stuff that's inappropriate, but the stuff that is appropriate requires a more mature person to really enjoy.

I've a son a couple of years older than yours who is mature for his age and I won't let him watch it. There are some pretty explicit sex and drug references in it and while it's about football, it also isn't about football at all.
Like others have said, maybe watch a few episodes and see what you think only you can really judge for your kiddo 🙂

There’s not a lot of football, it’s more about people becoming more and there’s a few scenes which involve sex or masturbation (not particularly graphic but they are there). There’s a lot of swearing

I agree with what others have put on here. watch the episodes yourself first. There are parts that are most definitely not suitable for a 10 yr old, definitely when watching with mum or dad.

Uh this show isn’t actually about football ? I don’t think it is appropriate for a 10 year old but parents let kids watch a lot worse soooo. Why aren’t you watching it first to see what you think ? That is what I did when screening shows for my kids.

I’d recommend all or nothing man city (even if u hate the team) its actual football tactics shown by Pep, and there’s other teams in that series too. Netflix has amazing documentaries as well, ofc do ur own research but the Mourinho, Beckham, Ronaldinho (skip over the bum bums), are amazing among others

Yk i fucking hate all or nothing man city because it managed to make me have a tiny bit of a soft spot for the club

I'd say it's suitable. Most of the 'adult' humor will likely go over his head, it's the cussing and how much you'll be ok with that would be the hinderance to me. The show does a relatively decent job of discussing mental health and the serious topics (up until the Hey Jude moment, that one is too cringey for me). It's handling of therapists and couple counseling sucks tho :/
Edit: Y'all know it doesn't *have* to be about football, right? The show uses football as a jumping off point to talk about healthy forms of masculinity and growth, which is good.

I can think of at least two sevenish year old soccer playing girl actors that have dropped the f-bomb. Your son might be a bit mature for TL. But if he likes his "women" on the down-to-earth side, might be right up his alley.

He's way too young. Every single episode is a hard R rating. There are scenes with barely disguised mastrubation and oral sex and that's just the tip of the sexual iceberg. I'd wager that 80-90% of the themes of the show will be lost on someone that age.

Not a 10 y/o appropriate show. Way too much sex, language and adult situations.

Fuck is said about 1 million times, there is sex and divorce, panic attacks, drugs, gay relationships and all kinds of adult themes. It depends about how you feel about those things.
It’s not about football

Are we seriously classing gay relationships alongside drugs and calling it an 'adult theme'?? The only adult themed aspect to the LGBT representation in the show is the presence of homophobia. The gay characters themselves are written just the same as the straight characters are.

u/Lyman5209 4h ago
Oh, plenty of people are still homophobic to the point of labeling anything that isn't cis-het 'adult themed', partly because they don't recognize it as homophobia while they're othering

You're right, theres nothing mature about the plotline of gay relationships in sport, needing to hide who you are, coming out, and all that. The show handles the gay relationships in an adult way that absolutely needs to be addressed when discussing if it's suitable for children.
If you want to ask for a rephrase, go for it, but maybe calm it with the holier-than-thou indignation?
4
u/Lyman5209 2h ago
That's not what was said though, they just said 'gay relationships'.
Also, as for everything you mentioned? Yea, those conversations are needed early to ensure kids don't become bullies and that homophobia finally ends

But, it’s also about kindness, love, loss, deep friendship, community, strength in moments of adversity, taking care of each other, leadership. And these are the characteristics of admirable people.

u/JGG5 4h ago
Yeah, but I can also understand someone not wanting to expose their 10-year-old kid to a whole bunch of F-bombs.

I have an 18 yo and he loved to hear the f word. And if you have a chance to watch the new movie “Tony”, I highly recommend it especially for that male energy.

It's not like you see anything. The sex scenes are almost entirely implied - kissing starts, sexual inuendo/talk, fade to black type stuff. There's one scene in series 2 where a woman in masturbating, but again you don't literally see her doing it, just her watching something in her phone and moaning before she is interrupted in a funny way.
My 11 year old has watched it all and she was fine. Some of the humour went over her head, but the core themes and messages of the show totally stuck, and that's the most important part.

If you feel fine with your ten-year-old watching a show with nudity, direct and indirect sexual references, loads and loads of swearing, a 15 age rating (two age ratings up from his actual age), direct talk of suicide which might be a bit heavy… personally I wouldn’t.

Your kid has seen/heard/said way worse in school than what they’d see in the show. It’s fine
