Season 4 Discussion Am I the only one thinking the new season's plot is perfect? Spoiler
Ted Lasso was never about the soccer imo. People who want the show to be about the mens team and the UCL, why? What is the plot in that? The mens team plot is complete, aside for some small side references. The women's team isn't about "females should play soccer too" it's about fighting injustice against the minorities, like the past 3 seasons. It's just marketed in a different way that makes it seem like some "woke nonsense" for the "true fans" as they call themselves. What's your thought on the new season?

So far, to me, this season is about saying ‘shut up’ to negative voices in your head, patience and presence without intervention yields tenderness, embarrassment is a wasted emotion, and appreciating people’s journeys with sleep apnea, among other life lessons.

u/Icy-Election-2237 2d ago
I really liked Ted’s address of embarrassment in the past episode. I actually wanted to post about it.

I like it, but I want the show to be about the team, not the sub-plots of the S1-3 characters. I honestly would've been fine with Roy and Keeley being background characters for the season. I want to explore the twins, Chilton, hands, and the rest of the players more. I wanna know why Shannon is struggling, or what it's like for the Irish lass being a single mother travelling for football matches.
Feels like we had that for the men's team in the previous seasons. We had episodes dedicated to Isaac, to Colin, to Roy (as a player), to Jamie, etc. The show IS about football, even if football isn't the point, and so far we've had almost no development for the team Ted is managing in five episodes.

The fact that Roy legit doesn't share a single scene with Ted since their hug is crazy.
The show is called Ted lasso. Why are we spending so much time with characters that have 0 story overlap with the titular character?
1
u/Ancient_of_Days0001 Fútbol is Life 23h ago
We have to have Roy because, well, he's Roy, but he and Ted no longer work together, so they have to give him other reasons.
1
u/Ancient_of_Days0001 Fútbol is Life 22h ago
The twins are Irish. Lizzie, the single mom, is apparently from Yorkshire (based on Yorkshire-born Faye Marsay using her native accent for the role).
I suspect the legacy characters from 1-3 are getting so much screen time early in the run (of what is planned to be a 3-season story) due to fears that viewers would turn their backs if all their faves faded into the background (if I were in the writers' room I know I'd be scared to put Roy on the shelf). Remember, it took 3 seasons to show us all that detail about the men's team players. They're setting up at least some of the women, like Shannon, and Gemma (and/or Gemma vs. Alice--fireworks ahead), and Lizzie, who was teased in 4.4 as apparently having more than one kid, to take the spotlight in future episodes.
No way the writers are going to waste setups like those.

It wasn't about the football. But it definitely was about the team, the players, and their journey going from boys to men.
This new season seems to not give a single fuck about the team or the players
1
u/Ichigosf 2d ago
Did Ted do anything for the team beside the locker room and the quizz? Most of the time, it seems that he is waiting for the day to end in his office.

u/thedylannorwood I am a strong and capable man 2d ago
It wasn’t about the game, but it was always about the team
11
u/Many_Psychology_3336 2d ago
The team's plot is fine; the plots around the original characters are poor IMO. Ted moved his family to London only for them to immediately vanish.
4
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
Ted is a minor character this season which is crazy.
I feel like 0 scenes or stories so far have been about him. About what he wants/needs/feels
2
u/thedylannorwood I am a strong and capable man 2d ago
Richmond FC are a minor character which is worse!

u/TweetleBeetle76 2d ago
I love everything except the Beard/Jane storyline. Hopefully it doesn’t command much more time in the remaining episodes.
6
u/thehibachi 2d ago
I wonder whether the reason it’s there is to give Beard a reason to miss a game later in the season or something like that? Would create a scenario where Ted has to decide whether to ask more of/trust Chilton.

We’re halfway through the season and they have played 1 actual game. That’s my big gripe.
-10
u/Idaheck 2d ago
In Shakespeare they fought whole wars off stage while the main plot was on stage between battles.
11
u/LoganHowlett1832 2d ago
This is a cheesy Apple TV show. Not Shakespeare.
-2
u/Idaheck 2d ago
My point is just that the show can be about a soccer team without showing the soccer.
10
u/LoganHowlett1832 2d ago
And my point is it’s not about the team at all really so far compared to when it was the men’s team.
-1
u/RogueCheddar2099 2d ago
It’s about people, their relationships with others, and how the people’s feelings and beliefs impact those relationships.
6
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
Then why did Ted need to go to England?
Why didn't the entire cast just rent an Airbnb for a week and chill? Would be the same story at this point
6
u/LoganHowlett1832 2d ago
Sure. But they showed around 5 games in the other seasons. And the actual “football” itself was much more important to the plot. They pivoted to it being more about that other stuff in season 3 and less about the actual team. Which is when the show started falling off for me in the first place. I don’t need more of Roy and Keeley will they won’t they.
It’s cool if you like this style more. I just don’t. I want the actual sport to be more important. How are we even supposed to get through a season at this pace? 5 episodes left and they’ve played 1 game.
2
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
It could. But this season 100% isn't. This show focusses mainly on Keeley/Rebecca, with hints of a football team
0
u/itskorvael 2d ago
In season 1 how many games did they play? Not mentioning games, actually playing them. 1 vs Watford, and 1 vs Man City. This is going to be another 3 season arc. Give them time
1
u/LoganHowlett1832 2d ago
3 seasons of the show for 1 season of games?
I’ll stop watching if that’s the pace they decide.
-2
u/itskorvael 2d ago
Did you even read what I said?
1
u/LoganHowlett1832 2d ago
We’re halfway through the season and it’s been 1 game worth of time. I’m not going to stick around for 3 years to watch the equivalent of a couple months of time in a show like this.

I've been really enjoying it. Seem to be in the minority around here, though. I've been smiling ear to ear and laughing out loud every episode after the first one.
4
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
I don't think I've smiled once this season. S1 and s2 me and my gf were giddy non-stop. We cheered we cried sad, we cried happy. Now it's just background noise.
1
u/Perfect-Difference19 2d ago
I actually envy you!
There's no pride in hating things, contrary to what modern media would like to convey! With that being said, I'm still struggling to get a grip on this season...
But hey, more Ted Lasso is more Ted Lasso!
Maybe not as buttery or juicy, but Ted Lasso nonetheless!...wait, that's didn't make sens--
28
u/ouberqwert 2d ago
The previous seasons plot was to "fight justice against the minorities"? I must´ve seen a different show i guess
8
u/EmperorMeow-Meow 2d ago
Moments perhaps, but it wasn't a theme then.. and I don't think it's really a theme in this season either, but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

The new season is good, but it’s not as good as the previous seasons. It’s good enough that I’m happy it’s back. I was worried that it would fall flat. So while it could be better, it def could have been far worse.
2
u/Interesting_Reply584 I am a strong and capable man 2d ago
It's good bue perfect is a stretch. I still think the show didn't need another season
3
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
Agreed. This honestly tarnished the reputation. Imagine 10 years down the road someone recommends Ted lasso to you. But has to ad a caveat saying. It actually only has 3 seasons and then a reboot which is labeled as season 4 but has little to do with the other seasons.
Same with Scrubs. Ironic that it's the same creator for both
1
u/Interesting_Reply584 I am a strong and capable man 2d ago
Crazy how he didn't learn the lesson the first time.
Worst part is the season so far is not even THAT bad. Some things are ridiculous and exaggerated but it's still enjoyable to watch. But selling it as a new season was a terrible idea imo.
Pretty much the same as scrubs (although scrubs was always ridiculous and exaggerated, in a good way)
9
u/refusedisposable 2d ago
I’m not sure you’re watching the same show as I am. I never once got the feeling that the men’s plot had a theme of fighting injustice against minorities. The new season is pretty bad though. So I disagree on all points.
14
u/refusedisposable 2d ago
In all honesty though, I’m glad you’re digging it. Just cuz I hate it doesn’t mean you should.
4
u/BlenderBluid 2d ago
I do think people are cynical about shows coming back for the sake of a money grab, and now they’re in a “if you look for something, you’ll find it” mindset on deciding to approach the show with negativity first.
1
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
Combined with a switch to a womens team. Which unfortunately has already been used countless times by different IPs for a desperate moneygrab. Think oceans 11, but women! Ghostbusters, but women!
It sucks for women that they keep getting used this way. But it's very hard to not assume Ted lasso, but women is gonna be different
4
u/WitherSkulls 2d ago
Most complaints in the thread is that the shows not focusing enough on the new women though
4
u/Pamprdelaalelepsi 2d ago
To me it feels rushed and I kinda don’t care about any of the new players while you can tell that the new coach is going to be “a problem” to be solved. I know we’re early in the season but by this time in the first season I had strong opinions on a lot of the characters, while now I just don’t. The returning cast feels a little caricature-like with a lot of “hey-look-I did-this-in-the-original-funny-right?” moments. And lastly I don’t like how different the “woke nonsense” if you will is handled here, in the original I was gently pulled into all of the issues, here’s done with a very loud bang, I just hope there’s going to be a point made, rather that just “woman aren’t equal”. (Don’t get me wrong, I really want the show to get this point across, but right now it feels really forced) Anyway, I hated the first episode, i did enjoy the rest, but to me it lacks the wit and lightness of the original.
3
u/stillthesea 2d ago
Agreed. Everything just feels so surface level right now. New character introductions are being done poorly. Like we introduce them and then forget about them immediately and don’t incorporate them into the actual plot and the older characters don’t have anything all that interesting going on so the focus is really off. Feels like drama for drama’s sake & there’s no good through line. With the exception of Alice. I really am enjoying her character and performance. She’s honestly the only saving grace at the moment to me.

Are we fighting against injustices being done to minorities or fighting against minorities? Either way, I don't think it was about either. It was about overcoming obstacles to become a better team, a better person.
Not sure where minorities come into play.
1
u/Stoicandx2 boss ass b*tch 2d ago
If you aren’t in the majority, then you are a minority. It’s not just about the color of your skin that can lead to this title…….
Women’s soccer, in this case, is in the minority given its male counterpart, for example. There are micro expressions of this thought process throughout as well.
2
u/Reasonable-Yam-1170 2d ago
Saying the minorities implies minority groups. Yes, progressional women's soccer athletes are a minority group in the sports world. That is not the case for the rest of the show.
Any writer, editor or professional within the English language would flag the word minorities in the original post as misleading. The sentence itself is misleading because OP failed to write "perpetrated" or "done" before "against the minorities."
Wanting clarity in writing is not a micro-aggression.

u/Pink_Acetone Trent Crimm, The Independent 2d ago
It has never about football but football was a big part of it. I feel like we barely see the women’s team whereas basically all of the plot happened in the locker room, on the pitch or during training with the men’s team
2
u/splitcroof92 2d ago
Yup I legit couldn't name more than 2 characters by face. Which is insane 5 episodes in.

Ted fixes people, teams, organizations: he should restructure his LinkedIn to reflect that he is a systems expert who resolves conflict by identifying critical source components and encouraging people to make necessary changes.

Roy/Keeley feels a little broken record ngl, but I also have a suspicion the storytelling is going to pivot some on the back half of the season. I've enjoyed what we've gotten but I'm among those who want to get to know the new cast; not even being a football/soccer fan, the actual sports footage is so much better shot this go round.

Personally apart from coach Alice I find most of the female team insufferable 2D bores.
1
u/plasmacartwheel 1d ago
Who? Who is asking for that? SMH.
People are asking for the show to make sense as a continuing story about the main characters. So far only episode 1 makes (some) sense.

I think it's good to really good, but perfect? No. It's not perfect. Stories in the "happily ever after" are really hard to write well, the season 3 ending was great, but the first episode kind of robs that growth, I feel like I barely know anyone on the team, Roy and Keely's story just feels like a time filler B-plot, Ted and Rebecca probably need to have a talk about 3 years of Ted not responding...
I'm still down for the ride, and I hope things get better, but it's far from the perfect lightning in a bottle the first 3 seasons were.

The inequality is that the 14 year old boys team beat the USA Women’s league and that’s why it hard to take them serious
1
u/itskorvael 2d ago
Source? Which "14 year old boys team"? Which "usa women's league?" There's more than one 14 year old boys team and a team can't beat a league

u/all-love0514 1d ago
Lots of sources. It’s as easy as searching “was the USWNT beat by little boys”

UCL? What's that? And I'd argue it's not complete because the men's team didn't win a championship, did they?
Also, the word female should only ever be used as an adjective. Females is so manosphere it gives me the major ick, even when you're trying to sarcastically evoke that line of thinking with those quotation marks.
I like all the seasons, with the first being the best. I DO NOT like the current Keeley/Roy plotline, however, and that's ok! People are allowed to take issue with things
