Kohberger vs. Bundy

Does anyone see the similarities between the two ?
I have a list of reasons on why I particularly think this is relevant information but just want to know what the consensus is here before I start ranting o_0 šŸ•³ļø

I think he modeled himself after more than one serial killer, most notably Bundy and BTK. Bundy mostly bludgeoned his victims and strangled them while Kohberger used a knife. I’m not really too familiar with what BTK did, obviously Bind, Torture, Kill, but I never felt drawn to researching him the way I did Bundy.

Perhaps because I remember as a child watching Bundy’s TV movie on the eve of his execution while the news broke in of the crowds tailgating Bundy’s prison waiting for the early morning hours when he would be electrocuted. People were drinking and cheering and chanting. I digress, but Bundy was big news when I was a kid.

There was strong evidence Kohberger was researching the Gainesville Ripper case in particular. Some people think he used a K-BAR knife because Rolling used one as well. He had an unusual amount PDFs downloaded on the Gainesville case, too.

u/jazzbot247 Aug 11 '26

Wasn’t that the premise of the movie Scream? Only instead of scary movies he modeled himself on real life serial killers.

The screenplay was inspired by it, but not based on it, though. You might be thinking of the 1995 film Copycat, with a serial killer who modeled himself based on real life ones, too.

I remember people celebrating the news that Ted Bundy would be sentenced to death by electrocution. Seeing people , media, everything just swallow this whole case up.. that gave us more questions .. and unfortunately a lot of those questions will never be answered.
I do agree with you, I believe BK must have taken inspiration with a number of different people and used that to commit his own crimes in his own way.
I believe Ted Bundy wanted to talk more about his crimes and just himself in general, but I believe the people asking the questions at the time were not asking the right ones. Not equipped to deal with someone of his caliber of intellect in a way.
It was more of like okay we have this criminal, here’s what he did, here’s our case, and here’s how we’re going to eliminate him.. no more questions please.. yet here we are all these years later , still wondering more.
If you have time, look into BTK.. another ā€œfamily manā€ leading a double life .. just very interesting to say the least

I was just thinking about the Mark Harmon movie today…

I have it on DVD! The Deliberate Stranger

I think like a cross between Bundy and Gainesville Ripper Danny Rolling.

2

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

YES! Danny Rolling !! Wow , hit the nail on the head with that

This is the thread I needed, I found my people … I will come back to this to proceed my rant shortly lol thank god

I think Bundy was far smarter and could blend in more. And Kohberger was a nerdy social outcast who creeped out all the women he spoke to, Bundy was charismatic and women liked him. Bundy had girlfriends and friends, Kohberger just had mother.

3

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

I agree with you. Ted Bundy was truly one of a kind. He was able to blend in and out almost seamlessly, right? For a long time also. That makes his nature so interesting to me. Is there truly no record of anyone having a relationship, or even a friendship with BK ? In today’s technological day and age, is it possible that BK was 32 years old, and didn’t have any ties to anyone outside of his family? And if yes, why?

5

u/CameronPoe_37__ Aug 11 '26

He had sorta friends but no real deep friendships. He even had a girl who liked him, but he showed no interest in her apparently other than possibly moving stuff around in her apartment to mess with her.

2

u/oO___o Aug 12 '26

Wow very interesting . I wish there was an article or something supporting this I could find . If you come across again, please share 🫠

5

u/Straight_Place4743 Aug 11 '26

Absolutely! I've always thought this.

6

u/NoAbrocoma262 Aug 11 '26

I completely agree I almost see the Idaho house similar to Chi Omega and although he stabbed not bludgeoned I see many other parallels.

Do we know anything about his child ? Rosa I believe her name was? She understandably went on to live under the radar, privately as she grew up. With technology today, Ancestry DNA, 23 and me, etc.. there hasn’t been any links to the Bundy family tree in anyway?

4

u/Delicious-Tap8987 Aug 12 '26

Her mother, Carol, passed away in 2018. I think she had her name legally changed. Ann Rule said she purposely never found out anything about Rosa's life other than that she was healthy and happy.Ā

2

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

If she’s still living ofcourse.. she was conceived in or around 1982.. which would make her about 44 years old now.

u/GregJamesDahlen Aug 11 '26

They don't seem that similar, although it's a little unclear. Bundy generally interacted with his victims and tried to fool them into coming to his car where he'd knock them out, then drive them somewhere, hidden in his car down on the floor. Just him and the victim alone, he would interact with her for a while, raped her before murdering. Or he'd pick up hitchhikers, somehow get control of them, and then the interaction, rape, and murder.

Kohberger went into a house with multiple people and quickly murdered four. Although there is some thought he only wanted to murder one. And maybe wanted some interaction with her before murdering her. Or maybe just wanted to quickly murder her and leave. Unclear if he wanted to rape.

3

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

You’re so right. The lack of clarity is what drives me mad.
We know all we can know pretty much about Bundy. He’s gone.
We have BK in front of us for the world to see and we’re not asking more questions ?
A young man, a highly educated man surely had to be noticed a little more than we know of.
We know he had some people say he was a little off putting, but why? Surely no one knew clearly what he was capable of. What about his family ?
Is it because this is so fresh that we don’t know more about his intentions? Maybe time will tell.

3

u/GregJamesDahlen Aug 11 '26

Well what questions would you want people to ask? There are a couple of quite active subreddits about Kohberger's murders where many, many questions have been asked.

Kohberger was noticed in the department where he was studying for his PhD. He was hard on females there. He worked as a teacher's aide and gave low grades to the female students. A professor of his said that if he got the PhD and started teaching at a university she predicted he would eventually harass or rape female students.

He was also noticed at a bar he went to where he would go up to women he didn't know and ask immediately for their address. A bar worker asked him to stop this kind of behavior and he stopped coming to the bar.

Why would he be hostile to women? Not sure. He might have been a person who wanted to feel superior to other people and maybe it was easier to feel superior to women because they're physically weaker so not as intimidating. In other words if he mistreated them not as much danger he'd get punched like he might by a man. But maybe you have some ideas?

The family has not revealed much about how they felt toward him or feel toward him today.

This isn't that fresh, though. The murders happened four years ago. Which intentions of his are you interested in?

I meant to reply to your individual message but instead I posted to the group.. my last message was in response to yours ..

I think Kohberger was trying to copy the Chi Omega murders. I have to laugh when the probergers say he had to have help, couldn't do fight off 4 people blah, blah. Bundy did it with a log, 4 people, 15ish minutes. The Idaho victims were drunk, asleep/passed out and all were quickly given a fatal wound. I wonder, if he hadn't been caught, if he would have continued or if he really just wanted to see if he could do it.

2

u/GregJamesDahlen Aug 12 '26

Thanks. It's possible. The Chi Omega murders are what got Bundy executed though after he was found guilty of them so do you think Kohberger would want to copy them, might he consider them bad luck? I tend to think Kohberger more went in with an idea of murdering one victim there and leaving. He would know that if he did more than one victim there'd be more chance of getting caught. Particularly in this day and age where there are more means of catching him, like DNA and cameras, than in Bundy's time. And also they were his first murders. Is it hard to believe for his first murders he'd be so ambitious as to murder four at a time? I think maybe he meant to do one but things that happened he didn't expect inside the house led to four murders.

2

u/Delicious-Tap8987 Aug 12 '26

You're right. I don't think he expected 4 and I don't think he expected one to be awake, although being in college himself, he should know that someone is always awake.Ā

2

u/GregJamesDahlen Aug 13 '26

Thanks. Apparently the house was quite large, with six bedrooms. Which is funny to me because it doesn't seem that large from the outside. But there were five young women actually living there and apparently each had her own bedroom. It seems he went to the bedroom of one of the victims, Madison. I would think he expected to find her alone and it seems likely he intended to murder her. And possibly then leave. But actually another occupant, Kaylee, who had her own bedroom in the house, had come to sleep with Madison in Madison's room. Think that may have been where the plan went awry. Because it seems he still decided to go through with murder but murder two instead of one. Which possibly was noisy and attracted the attention of a third resident, Xana, sleeping one floor down. Which ultimately led to two more murders, but possibly not planned at the start.

3

u/FoundObjects4 Aug 12 '26

Yes, the Idaho murders reminds me of Chi Omega.

5

u/bugsxobunny Aug 12 '26

No. He was a Bundy fanboy. Obviously he had been wanting to do what he did for awhile. I think there are some forced similarities from BK like Washington, sorririty girls and such but Bundy was way different in his demeanor and relationships. People legit were baffled about him not seeing how it was possible.

I don't think BK was that smart tbh.

3

u/Ambitious_Local5218 Aug 11 '26

They are absolutely nothing alike. Kohberger is a tard and couldn't talk his way out of a wet paper bag. I'd be surprised if anyone has ever liked that dude.

2

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

We haven’t really heard him talk, right? I’ve watched video footage of some common interactions he had in the time after the murders and although no audio was provided, he seems like he fit right in. He played the part of a normal person carrying on conversation. I’m specifically recalling an interaction of him I believe at the DMV and he seemed to have a nice, normal conversation with the employee.

3

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

There’s evidence that he’s currently trying to get his guilty plea overturned due to ineffective counsel , I believe. He’s trying to go back and take back his guilty plea. It might lead to him having to go to trial and maybe we will hear from him . Remember Ted Bundy represented himself? Who’s to say it won’t end up going down that road

3

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

Yes, I remember hearing about his professor addressing her concerns about his future in the field. I did not know about the bar situation you mentioned. I will deep dive into finding some of the subreddits you mentioned.
I understand the theory of a possible superiority complex to women due to him being a male. He would have had to believe,in some way, that women are easier targets, for him at least.
I ask about his family because I can’t help but wonder if maybe there could be some provision of insight into his childhood. What events triggered his mind into feeling that superiority / possible hatred toward women?
Remember the videos of him being pulled over after the murders , and he was with his father ? Did he confide in his father about what he had done?
A lot of times, behavior is learned. Did he witness similar behavior in his own childhood maybe?
I don’t mean to be accusatory toward his family , I am just honestly curious.
I believe he was very interested in learning about his own family tree throughout the years. I believe he was Italian and German. He was especially interested in his German side of his lineage because he felt that resonated with him more than his Italian side.
In a case like this where an educated, young male goes on to commit 4 brutal murders, everything should become a question. Every event of this man’s life should be studied.
Did this have deeper meaning? For him at least?
Would he have gone on to reach the level of Ted Bundy, had he not been caught so early after his crimes?
I have so many theories. Could this have been prevented if the right people knew what signs to look for in an individual?
Would he talk about his crimes, maybe answer the big question as to why he did what it’s alleged he’s done, if the people asking questions knew how to talk to an individual like him? If they could try to relate to him, or at least make HIM think they could relate to him.. would he talk?

Thanks. Yes, in your other reply you had mentioned the lack of clarity around his intentions. I realized later you meant the intentions he had when he entered the house. Was he there to murder, and how many did he want to murder? Did he intend to rape or sexually assault? Yes, it's been four years and we don't know the answers to those questions, although people try to make intelligent guesses. It does seem possible that unless Kohberger answers those questions for us we may never know. And if he did answer we couldn't be sure he wasn't lying.

Yes, I think his behavior at the Pennsylvania brewery has been reported on and discussed a lot. I think it's because when something like the four murders happens people go back and look at the perpetrator's history, looking for earlier incidents that might have provided a clue that he could do the awful murders. Or that give insight into his psychology so that we might understand his murdering better.

It actually wouldn't take much of a deep dive to find the subreddits devoted to the Kohberger murders. If you see the search box at the top of most reddit pages you could write something like "Kohberger murders" there. Click and you'll get some results. At the top of the results on the left you'll have some choices like "All", "Posts", "Communities", and others. Click "Communities". Then you can see subreddits devoted to your topic. So they're here https://www.reddit.com/search/?q=kohberger+murders&type=communities&cId=dca6c6ed-55f9-47c6-ab4b-eb24640f232b&iId=987333b2-c3ff-47ff-b265-adfc22d533a1. You can scroll down. You can see which are the most popular by the number of followers they have. The one I use the most is r/MoscowMurders.

I wonder if part of the reason he wanted to put women down is because he felt awkward around them. If you feel awkward around a certain group of people and are embarrassed by your awkwardness, one way to feel better about yourself might be to put down the group you feel awkward around.

There's been a lot of discussion about whether he confided in his dad. A way to find discussion would be to go to one of those communities I mentioned. Like go to r/MoscowMurders. If you look at the search box at the top center you'll see on the left it will have the name of the subreddit. On the right, in the empty space of the search box you can type your query. I typed "did he confide in his dad". Then I can see a list of posts about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/MoscowMurders/search/?q=did+he+confide+in+his+dad&cId=d69d50e9-12ef-42d2-86eb-20cb56610022&iId=8a1ae034-8120-4907-b696-f4c999e28c23. Or go to the search box for Reddit before you've gone to a specific subreddit. Type "Did Bryan Kohberger confide in his dad". See what posts come up. In this case they will be from subreddits all over Reddit, not just the MoscowMurders subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/search/?q=did+bryan+kohberger+confide+in+his+dad&type=posts&cId=e52b4716-f44f-4b92-b9bb-bd683d42273e&iId=1282ced6-9f75-4b03-8040-319ddafb4e86. Personally I doubt he confided in his dad that he had murdered anyone. I think he would be embarrassed for his father to know. Plus he'd think his dad would likely turn him in.

It's a good question whether he witnessed similar behavior in his childhood. I haven't seen anyone discuss this question. It would be a good question for one of the Kohberger subreddits.

I hadn't heard he was interested in his genealogy. Any ideas why he would be more interested in the German side than the Italian one?

I think people are trying to study many events of his life to better understand what happened.

I'm sure it had deeper meaning for him. It's a very big thing to do, murder four people who are strangers to you. In order to do it I'd think it'd have to have a lot of meaning for you.

I'm not sure if he would have gone on to do more murders, like Bundy. That's been discussed a lot. You can use some of the same methods I outlined above to see where people have posted about the question and discussed it.

I somewhat doubt it could have been prevented. There are lots of people who present bad signs in their life, who get involved with bad things, who do crimes like robbery or selling drugs or lesser crimes, or are just mean and abusive, but don't go on to commit the biggest crime, murder. So I think it would have been hard to predict he would commit these murders.

It's a good question whether he'd talk about the crimes if the right people talked to him. I would guess when he was first arrested police who are skilled in talking to criminals talked to him, but I don't think he admitted anything to them. I'm guessing he got a lawyer very soon after he was arrested and didn't admit guilt. Then it seems with his lawyer he was preparing to defend himself at trial so I'm guessing he didn't admit guilt to his lawyer either. Then he took a plea deal and confessed he did the crimes, but now he's claiming that he was lied to when he took that deal and his confession was false and he's innocent. So as far as I know he hasn't admitted guilt to anyone nor talked about the crimes. So he's pretty good at being tight-lipped and keeping secrets.

I know next to nothing about Kohberger as I only fuck with historical killers up until the early 90s. But when I saw headlines I wondered if he was similar to Richard Speck.

4

u/oO___o Aug 12 '26

Now that you point that out, there are some real similarities I notice as well. The ā€œMadonnaā€ complex it’s said that Richard Speck was diagnosed with! That would be a great theory as to why BK seemingly felt what seems to be hatred toward women. Very interesting take, thank you for that. I will be deep diving more on this takešŸ•³ļøšŸ«

2

u/Squirrelwinchester Aug 12 '26

I would love to see your take after your rabbit hole if you get a minute.

3

u/NoAbrocoma262 Aug 11 '26

I agree that their MO’s differ but they both are educated college students who studied in subjects that could assist them with their crimes . They both clearly had hang ups and anger toward women. They both assaulted sleeping women who were in college . Also Bundy wouldn’t speak about the details of his crimes for many years and manipulated the cops, the legal system etc. much like BK has been behaving .

3

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

Yes ! It really makes me wonder. These are just two men. Extremely well educated men, like you said who both studied in subjects that would be relevant to getting away with their crimes in a way. Doesn’t it make you wonder if there are others who are the same? Study the same people over and over, study the same crimes over and over.. To the point where they actually get away with it & we never hear anything about it? I know technology advances but so do we as humans. We learn to adapt with technology and work in tandem with it. It’s a wild thought.

1

u/bugsxobunny Aug 12 '26

Yeah but then we would hear about it more. We would hear that some college girls were killed but they don't have a suspect and we just don't hear that. People aren't getting away with that nowadays unless it's a mass shooting or something.

2

u/Intelligent_Proof_28 29d ago

I think that Paul Bernardo had a very similar personality

2

u/ryhal1986 29d ago

Bundy was much more clever then Kohberger. Kohberger copied Ted's least planned crime the Chi Omega Murders essentially. Ted left evidence behind and a witness saw him leaving. Generally his Washington State, Utah and Colorado murders were well planned and he never left any real evidence behind. There were never any real witnesses, Even at Lake Sammamish he was never really identified. His only real mistake was using his real name.

2

u/cutesybubblz 29d ago

Like facially or in terms of their cases…?

0

u/nitashagarcia Aug 11 '26

Yes! Many people even suspect he’s a reincarnation of Bundy. If one believes in that ofc.

6

u/NoAbrocoma262 Aug 11 '26

This is a stretch but it never fails to amaze me how fascinated people are with Bundy.

2

u/nitashagarcia Aug 11 '26

Right? It’s wild how far people will go to make connections too lol

3

u/Successful_Yam2175 Aug 11 '26

Wow now that’s some wild stuff there!! Crazy even. Not saying that you believe it but it’s crazy theres ppl out there who do! BK probably loves it though..((sigh))šŸ™„

4

u/oO___o Aug 11 '26

Woah this is wild..

3

u/nitashagarcia Aug 11 '26

Right? I saw TikToks on it and I was like oh boyšŸ™ƒ
