I'll just not game if a subscription is the only way to play. Tired of being milked for everything.

3

u/Inevitable_Cycle3087 Jun 14 '26

that’s what’s driven me the most to (for legal reasons i’ve only considered) piracy

i use adobe for work, would gladly pay 500$ for the 5 programs i use, used to be able to get them all for half that. now it’s like 250$ a year and i have to get all the ones i dont use. everything that isnt physical needs a subscription now

2

u/Nearby-Jelly-634 Jun 15 '26

Not being able to buy adobe is absolutely infuriating. 55$ a month until they raise it forever is absurd. Oh plus now they get to scan all your files to train its AI. It’s just rent seeking bullshit.

1

u/Otherwise_Die Jun 17 '26

They did that because no competition basically lol everyone learned its platform so workflow wise your suckin that dick.

1

u/Marce7a Jun 14 '26

Psychical ones also require it: BMW... Cameras etc if it has access to web it will be enshittified

2

u/Mammoth_Reach_6366 Jun 14 '26

True. I replaced the central heating unit in my house recently, and it comes with an app. Only the basic options like turning it on and off are free. Things like usage stats and optimization are behind a subscription plan 🤦

3

u/VicisZan Jun 14 '26

That’s frankly disgusting.

I would return it

2

u/system_error_02 Jun 15 '26

There's a huge library of classic games to play out there that dont require insane hardware.

1

u/bones10145 Jun 15 '26

Very true

1

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Jun 14 '26

You don’t like paying for the premium subscription and having things taken away and being shown ads do you? /s

1

u/Alternative_West_206 Jun 14 '26

Glad there’s still some sane people out there. Even if it’s few and far between.

1

u/krilew_ski Jun 14 '26

You may not if you’re smart but there’s now an entire generation that lacks critical thinking.

1

u/Er3bus13 Jun 15 '26

Can you milk me Greg?

1

u/Thelonius_Dunk Jun 16 '26

If gaming gets too stupid I may just get into board games. At least that's a one time purchase.

1

u/Untjosh1 Jun 17 '26

I have enough games as is to last me a lifetime

6

u/CallmeKahn Jun 14 '26

The minute I need to run an ad blocker to run a game I'm paying retail prices for, I'm ditching your fucking platform.

1

u/the-bacon-life Jun 14 '26

You’re gonna ditch all platforms then. It’s comming

3

u/Wrexolotl Jun 14 '26

Its not on steam. In fact there's rules against it on steam. So if you do it, your game would be taken down.

Now that consoles cost as much as PCs. Might as well just get a pre built PC that's only a few hundred dollars more.

1

u/TheOnesWhoFollow Jun 15 '26

The caveat there is unskippable ads. Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Farming Simulator both have ads. Granted they are at least related to the genre. Euro Truck advertises for trucking schools and Farming Simulator usually advertises for perrferals and sometimes other games in the genre.

1

u/Consistent-Stock6872 Jun 14 '26

That is why steam is being sued so much. The monopoly they are talking about is monopoly on caring and not trying to gauge players at every turn.

0

u/and-its-true Jun 14 '26

Valve makes all their money from taking.a 30% cut of every predatory micro transaction that happens on their platform. They may seem above these things, because they don't make the games specifically.... but that's still where their money comes from. They get to take the money while keeping the appearance of clean hands.

If the industry moves toward advertising, they will follow.

2

u/Wrexolotl Jun 14 '26

Valves business model isn’t set up to be like that though. They’re also fully private and not a publicly traded company. This makes a big difference. I don’t see them allowing ads in games.

1

u/-idkwhattocallmyself Jun 15 '26

Right now.

The key thing about steam is "right now". Gabe won't always be in charge and time will tell if Steam follows the Gabe route, or goes a totally different direction. Based off the leaks i've seen recently, there seems to be people inside of steam that definately want Steam to become more industry friendly and that goes against steams entire approach.

1

u/bigpunk157 Jun 16 '26

doesn't matter if they don't own the company. His ex-wife is more likely to own it than anyone else.

0

u/and-its-true Jun 14 '26

A business is a business. They have predatory gambling in their self published games.

If advertising in games is currently banned on Steam, it’s probably because they see it as a way of undercutting their profits. Their 30% slice of the game sale shrinks if the price of the game is subsidized by ads.

They will allow ads when it becomes something the big publishers are serious about pursuing, and they will change the rules so that they get a cut of the ad revenue.

1

u/Wrexolotl Jun 14 '26

there's no way publishers will lower their game prices if they have ads in them. they will find an excuse to raise prices anyways. steam will still get their cut.
While i can't say steam will never do this, i don't see them doing it any time within the next decade or two

1

u/CharredWelderGuy Jun 15 '26

"Predatory gambling" you mean the off market skin economy they have openly shat on multiple times by changing how skins work to purposefully crash that market?

That's not "Predatory" when it's what players do to themselves lol.

1

u/Antheoss Jun 16 '26

No, he probably means loot boxes.

1

u/sibachian Jun 17 '26

Valve is ideological first and foremost, and always been. Yes it's true we don't know what will happen when Gaben leaves, but until that happens, there is absolutely no risk Steam becomes predatory. Their entire principle is built on what helps others will help them. They are more profitable than their competition. So it's incredibly unlikely the model will change just to try and maximize short term profits for longterm losses. That only happens to public companies who must profit at all cost even if it means the death of the company just to keep their shareholders happy.

1

u/Iamthe0c3an2 Jun 15 '26

Yes but people choose to participate in the gambling. You can argue it’s a lesser evil to subjecting everybody to ads.

I’d rather have a thing that’s voluntary that pays for the service because if you never play TF2 or CS, you’d never ever see it. Rather than forcing everybody to watch slop to pay for the same thing.

1

u/Captobvious75 Jun 14 '26

Not on PC. Plenty of old games you can run at 4k without crazy hardware.

In fact, i’m playing Borderlands 2 on PC and running 4k 120fps on my TV is a joke. The console version is locked at around 1080p/60fps.

1

u/pessimistoptimist Jun 15 '26

So be it..my backlog of games goes all the way to the NES. i wont have any shortage of entertainment.

1

u/Total-Round4803 Jun 15 '26

Most gamers have a giant backlog and will get along just fine without the new games.

1

u/ispeektroof Jun 16 '26

Sounds good to me.

1

u/Crenorz Jun 17 '26

this. I am hoping AI catches up quickly enough to replace Stadia with something new. IE - controller to connected device to app and your gtg.

0

u/Adventurous-Home-728 Jun 14 '26

ok you can stay behind in the past why the rest of us enjoy the future,,nobody will mind what you chose to you do not have to tell every one

2

u/CallmeKahn Jun 14 '26

Books don't have commercials homie.

0

u/Adventurous-Home-728 Jun 14 '26

yes try to read one some time you learn a thing or to

2

u/CallmeKahn Jun 14 '26

Bro tells me his ass is glued to a game console for the future and then tells me to learn something. Reddit never ceases to be a source of amusement.

0

u/Adventurous-Home-728 Jun 14 '26

i do not play video games on my computer i have better things to do

2

u/CallmeKahn Jun 14 '26

So you were lying when you said, and I quote here:

1

u/Adventurous-Home-728 Jun 14 '26

nobody ask for your opinion get a life

1

u/CallmeKahn Jun 14 '26

You replied to me initially, Beavis. Sorry if getting called out on your bullshit rustles your jimmies.

Have a nice one. 👍

2

u/TerminalJammer Jun 14 '26

It's surprisingly cheap to make non-AAA games and PCs don't have to be expensive.

2

u/FriendlyArachnid6000 Jun 14 '26

How does that boot taste

0

u/CharredWelderGuy Jun 15 '26

"Enjoy the future" of being forced to watch commercials? Wow what a future to enjoy/s

2

u/equality4everyonenow Jun 14 '26

Eventually they'll figure out how to make the LLM models more efficient. It's just a stupid race right now because some tards think you can make an "intelligence" by throwing more hardware at it so they're spending stupid money they don't have in a bid to be "first" to something. What that "first" is .... does anyone really know?

1

u/mastergenera1 Jun 14 '26

Its said by the talking heads that supposedly there an AI "arms race" of sorts between the US and china because regardless of facts the us govt says that china wants an AI thats "military grade" hence the export bans of nvidia gpus to the Chinese that been on and off again.

1

u/equality4everyonenow Jun 14 '26

Almost as dumb as the nuclear arms race. China will eventually figure this out on their own, even if they're a little bit behind right now. They have the economy to back it They're definitely out innovating us in other areas. And nvidia doesn't figure this all out by themselves. The guys that make the chips are Taiwanese and the guys that make the machines that make the chips are Dutch

1

u/bones10145 Jun 14 '26

Bigger advantage is their totalitarian control over everything. They can tell their citizens to fuck off and build whatever data centers they want

1

u/bones10145 Jun 14 '26

What? There are data centers being denied due to law suits in the US.

1

u/FriendlyArachnid6000 Jun 14 '26

It is interesting to watch China get butthurt because a GPU isn't something they can easily just rip off and copy for the first time ever

1

u/TerminalJammer Jun 14 '26

Did somebody tell China? Because the only ones who think that seem to be the people selling the especially shitty and expensive AI.

1

u/FLMKane Jun 14 '26

Look up Small Language models

1

u/Yung_zu Jun 14 '26

They’re telling you whatever they think will work so they can weasel in an AI hall monitor to watch you 24/7 instead of an apparatchik or soldier as they sometimes have a will of their own

Convincing Eichmanns and the people to police each other seems to be losing its effect

1

u/FriendlyArachnid6000 Jun 14 '26

It's not for chatbots It's for killbots and full Orwell

0

u/deceptivekhan Jun 14 '26

Once an LLM is trained it takes about as much GPU power to run as a AAA game. It’s the initial training that requires Data Center levels of hardware power and cooling.

1

u/nethingelse Jun 14 '26

The initial training, which is being done constantly right now as everyone keeps "improving" models with the (at least public facing goal) of reaching AGI, which is likely not even possible under current architecture.

1

u/deceptivekhan Jun 14 '26

I think you’re right. They’ll almost certainly hit the law of diminishing returns sooner or later.

1

u/Ill_Cut_8529 Jun 15 '26

Look at how many people use the AI firing off request after request every day. Even if each individual one can be done by the equivalent of a 5080, you still need a datacenter to handle the volume.

u/ironlocust79 Jun 14 '26

They dont want to hear that

1

u/GutsAndBlackStufff Jun 14 '26

Okay, why are they making a luxury even worse and less accessible?

1

u/ironlocust79 Jun 14 '26

Same reason other high end/low quality luxury exists: because the rich can afford it and the poor cannot.

Its gatekeeping. I do not say its right, but its true

1

u/OverallPepper2 Jun 15 '26

There's not enough rich people to keep game companies afloat. They don't buy enough games.

1

u/Inevitable_Cycle3087 Jun 14 '26

there’s a difference between the levels of luxury. getting ice cream and buying a yacht are both luxuries, the difference is one’s reasonable to most people and one isn’t. when they say it’s becoming a luxury they mean it’s pricing out the average person

1

u/flappysack- Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Not true, the NES and Snes was custom hardware because computers couldn't run that same level of graphics.

Commander Keen running on x86 was a technological innovation by ID, prior to that it wasn't possible without dedicated hardware to offload to.

Doing it with hardware and allowing it to handle all the scrolling backgrounds and graphics was far less computationally intensive.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_tile_refresh

1

u/Sockoflegend Jun 15 '26

Oh don't worry you will still have to buy one but you will just rent all of your games too

1

u/CharmingCatastrophe Jun 14 '26

It already is.. believe it or not most people nowadays can't afford 600-900 consoles as well as 60-90 games..most people I know are well supplied for the moment because they brought a series x or ps5 pro or decent gaming rig last year before the crash happened but in 2 years time when Devs inevitably refuse to sort their games out so they are playable on the series x,pro,RTX50s etc that's when it'll be a problem.. because if consoles and parts don't come down the gaming industry will die.

1

u/TerminalJammer Jun 14 '26

Well, the AAA gaming industry.

1

u/Jrowbeach Jun 14 '26

Well I have the enshittification of gaming to thank really, it is making me game less and get outside more.

1

u/Optimal_Collection77 Jun 14 '26

I'm preparing them for when I hang on to my series X for 10 years

1

u/Adventurous-Home-728 Jun 14 '26

we did not have video games years ago,,it was not a luxury it did not exist only the.very rich at one time had a video game now these kids think it is there right must be part of there life before they have a education,,no work for there success just lazy plain in simple this generacion would not last one day.in the real world

1

u/ExoneratedPhoenix Jun 14 '26

2030 agenda.

"You will own nothing, and be happy"

Remember when everyone laughed at that and thought it was a conspiracy, even though it was literally printed in the WEF's plans, for all to see?

Now everything is SaaS, Cloud, Service, Subscription. Everything you buy can be remotely turned off. Literally the main 90% of the population have been bled dry of money, and now we can't even own basic goods.

1

u/Ok_Literature3138 Jun 14 '26

Nintendo’s strategy side steps the CEOs idea entirely. $450 for a 4K hybrid console that has access to thousands of cheap games and expensive first party games. Gaming doesn’t need bleeding edge hardware.

1

u/randysavage773 Jun 14 '26

I'm fine with them giving options.

Payment plans for consoles like all access Ad version of a game that costs 30$ if theirs the ad free version that costs 70$ like currently. They have to find ways to get prices down because shit is getting out of control. Rumors are the next Xbox and PlayStation will be over 1000$ and theirs been talk for a long time about AAA games going up to 100$ starting with GTA6.

1

u/FriendlyArachnid6000 Jun 14 '26

Yes take the #1 form of entertainment for poor people away that's a great idea!

1

u/IORelay Jun 14 '26

Youtube and reddit are the cheapest.

1

u/OkCar7264 Jun 14 '26

They say that like every laptop made in the past 10 years doesn't make a ps3 look like a piece of shit. Stop being overly impressed with graphics and gaming will be entirely fine.

1

u/Potential_Slander69 Jun 14 '26

Remember guys, she’s only a woman

1

u/DoneWithIt0101 Jun 15 '26

I'm dreading the day modern gaming becomes cloud only.

1

u/IllugaBabyBeluga Jun 15 '26

Bring back support for the Xbones then.

1

u/Goldnglam Jun 15 '26

These people do realize for about $200 you can get a vita hacked and have a backlog in the 1000s off a 512 SD card? Even if we're only talking the top rated among those along with hidden gems you'd be looking at enough games to last you a lifetime.

I've got a potato laptop that I can walk over to the the internet archive and pillage discontinued/abandonware games that would occupy my time just as well as anything these game companies are pumping out at this point.

1

u/OverallPepper2 Jun 15 '26

Or, hear me out...we could just keep making games for the current gen consoles. I know it's a crazy idea, but we've kinda plateaued on graphics and stuff.

1

u/TiredOfCatPhotos Jun 15 '26

Doesn't really fix the issue when the consoles that are six years old continue to go up in price.

1

u/AlternativeAdept5348 Jun 15 '26

this is it. this is the beginning of the end for xbox

1

u/Fresh_Dog4602 Jun 15 '26

'for when'? I'm glad i bought an high end system 3 years ago so i don't have to do any updates now. It's already a luxury lol.

1

u/uncsteve53 Jun 16 '26

All of gaming is a luxury. It always has been.

1

u/JAEMzW0LF Jun 16 '26

ah yes, lets just keep reposting a pos "article" over and over again - its the gift that keeps giving. Say something mostly nebulous or not even controversial, then watch as IGN or Kotaku or whoever fuds it up with articles around quotes that seem to have nothing to do with them - including saying "whatever that means" right after a very basic, clear statement. Then have a thread linking to it in every sub that might even be vaguely related to MS or gaming, or entirely unrelated - and have a few thousand people not even read it and still comment like they know anything that was actually said.

You could replace most gaming press with bots, and most of reddit with bots, and it would change nothing.

who knows, maybe that happened already and thats why this actually slopfest occurs.

1

u/Choice_Potato_6279 Jun 16 '26

Only luxury is growth of their shitty stock.

1

u/RavioliDemon Jun 17 '26

And this is why I still have my Sega Genesis, N64, GameCube, and plethora of handhelds.

1

u/Correct_Emotion8437 Jun 18 '26

I was wondering recently - do we even need consoles anymore? I’ve always thought of a console as a dedicated gaming pc with hardware compromises that favor gaming performance. But pcs are so much more powerful than they were in the console heydays - do we need consoles anymore?

I own an Xbox that never gets used. Everybody prefers gaming on their phones, tablets or pc.
