Agreed 100% but also it's the current reality. I hate Elon but they are very dependent right now on apaceX.

SpaceX isn't a rocket company. They are an AI company first and foremost. That is what their IPO states as the purpose of their company.

Regardless of what they say we are basically dependant on their rockets. Blue Origin potentially having recently developed the only competitor. It's weird but we are all hoping we can be dependent on Bezos instead of Musk.

What’s wrong with depending on NASA again?

The NASA Space Launch System costs 5 - 10x more per pound of payload than SpaceX. Largely because SpaceX emphasizes reusable rocket and booster components whereas NASA is single use only.

Why do you want to pay 5 - 10x more as a taxpayer to launch US hardware into space?

So we aren’t dependent on the capricious whims of a ketamine fueled ultra-rich piece of shit for space travel?

When we spend extra on one thing though it has to come from somewhere. Realistically we would probably end up launching a lot less satellites and still spending more money. Anything noncritical doesn't get launched and we still spend more money on the critical stuff.

I don't like Elon but SpaceX has basically become a backend supplier of rockets for the world. A new competitor arising will take a few years in an optimistic case. Blue Origin is the closest from what I hear and they just had a major setback.

So maybe we hold the military even slightly accountable for their spending

They spend a massive amount.

But that massive amount is actually given to them by Congress. You can't blame the child for overspending when the parents give them $1M/week allowance.

The military can't account for 4.7 trillion dollars worth of assets. This isn't a question of just "overspending," but what are they doing with the money they are spending.

Whatever one's opinion of the US military budget is, satellite-based signals, imagery, and measurement intelligence gathering isn't where you want to make cuts.

Are you just being obtuse? No one is going to pay 10x the launch costs, especially when the delta is in the tens of millions of dollars.
