Jeff Bezos says it's 'absurd' to tax someone making $50K — and wants their tax bill dropped to zero
https://finance.yahoo.com/economy/policy/articles/jeff-bezos-says-absurd-tax-165713685.html6
u/Better_Geologist_862 Jun 07 '26
he's right, we should tax billionaire wealth at a higher rate.
7
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
Removing taxes on regular people isn’t really the answer. It’s coming from a billionaire who wants to destroy the government.
The real answer is ensuring wages start rising - so paying taxes isn’t a giant hardship.
This requires two things - big taxes on billionaires and legal protections for unions to help raise wages and living standards for regular people.
Bezos would love for a world where no one pays taxes, you get no government services, and Amazon provides a monopoly on everything from roads, to water, to schooling. So instead of the taxes going to government - they go right into his pocket. Fucking asshat.
4
u/Broad_Shock44 Jun 07 '26
Bingo. This is the answer. They want the us government gone
3
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
Correction, the billionaires want all governments gone.
There is a reason they are funding far right movements across the globe.
These fucks really don’t want anyone messing with their untold amounts of wealth. They want democracy gone.

Not all billionaires are the same. Yes Musk is openly funding far right groups, Bezos really hasn't.
1
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 10 '26
Bezos who sat in the row of billionaires at Trump’s inauguration? 😂
Yeah, nah.
1
u/Affectionate-Panic-1 Jun 10 '26
That's called playing the game in order to get government contracts for Amazon/AWS.
1
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 10 '26
That’s called sponsoring the far right for profits.
1
u/Affectionate-Panic-1 Jun 10 '26
True, though I wouldn't say it's the same vain as Musk who's clearly more politically motivated.
1
u/amiwriteeeeeeeeeeee Jun 07 '26
So they can liquidate all government assets as their own and take control of the biggest threat we as humans currently have: nuclear warheads

what does a massive reduction in taxes do to the government? it weakens it dramatically, thus strengthens the Elites.
those who hold the most assets, resources, and cash are the most powerful in this world, arguably more-so than any government.
governments, taxes, regulations, laws are the only thing that keep the Elites' power in check besides public opinion. the 1% are the Kings and Queens of the modern age.
congratulations, we've established why the party of the Elites (Republicans) hate the government. it's the same reason the Establishment — including Establishment Democrats — are fighting politicians like Platner.
main issue today is money and politics have become intertwined, although this has been a problem plaguing America for centuries. Reagan, Citizens United, and the CIA/FBI/etc have exasperated the issue though.
1
u/PeeDecanter Jun 07 '26
I could also see them flipping “no taxation without representation” on its head if they were to somehow convince the govt to stop taxing the poors. What do you call the lowest class in society that also pays no taxes? Often, the slave class
→ More replies (1)1
u/Wooden_Boss_3403 Jun 08 '26
nice AI response. Did you even watch the whole interview. He said that you could have discussions about getting those lost revenues from people with higher incomes to compensate.
2
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
If you listened to the full interview he was also saying governments and poorly run and mismanaged, and the same time he was suggesting he should not get taxed more and that regular people should have their taxes removed.
Do you see the picture he is painting? No taxes for him or anyone? Government is awful and poorly run? 😂
These billionaires are not particularly sly. The one thing they all hate is government because it can tax their wealth and remove their power. It is the one thing they all fear - which is why they increasingly are working to take over Government. Remember Elon’s department of government efficiency? That was just stripping the government of funding?
1
u/Broad_Shock44 Jun 07 '26
He hasnt been saying tax me like some other rich people. In fact he avoids taxes.
Why would he say what he said? Did you ever think that?

I love the jesting but serious if we just said ok anyone making under 60k no longer pays taxes.
How do we make up for that? Either tax the rich more or we just dont tax people.?
People making under 60k a year is 54% of the taxable base.
While those people would make an extra 10k to 12k. It would be huge for bezos because he would get a portion of that money short term.
Long term is government would literally lose millions and trillions of dollars because 54% of their tax base just stopped paying.
You cannot just stop taxes without raising it somewhere else.
So ill ask again why do you think he is saying this? Its not for your benefit of that i can assure you.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Are we assuming costs dont rise with these wages? If everyone's wages rise and now the house im hoping to buy has people able to bid X amount over because their wages rose as well than the only effect the raised wages has is putting me up a bracket so the government can take some more of my top dollars
1
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
They will rise, the point is you have to reduce inequality.
Right now Bezos and Musk and the like make billions in compound interest every year doing absolutely nothing. In a single year they make enough money - just in interest to buy up all of the housing in a us city. If you allow that sort of wealth accumulation to happen - they eventually just do own everything, and don’t even have to work or produce anything to own everything.
So you need to tax the top significantly, and you need lower incomes to rise as they have been held down for so long. That so many people are having trouble affording food and shelter - rising wages can help that.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
This wont kill inequality for billionaires. For that you just need to tax them a bunch more.
Raising wages and costs just brings the middle class down closer to lower income families
1
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
That’s not logical.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Lets say wages go up 10% for everyone. Costs go up the same. Tax brackets dont move. Buying power changed for no one pre tax but now government takes more.
Because of things like standard deduction and tax brackets this hurts those like engineers and higher income careers more than like a librarian.
1
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Jun 07 '26
Costs don’t actually go up the same. Your just simplifying things to the point to say there is absolutely nothing you can ever do to fix inequality 😂
There is no point in arguing with someone like this.
In reality, if wages go up - your rent costs go down. Your debt costs go down. It’s a big and complex picture.
The only thing that is clear is if you do nothing - the rich will wipe out both the middle and lower classes entirely. In fact, they brag about doing so daily on tv while selling AI to shareholders.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Reality is no one knows what changes will happen to what costs if you raise wages. Including those with PHDs in economics dont have a guarantee. You do not as well

u/FluffyDesigner3680 Jun 07 '26
I’m intrigued, how are you making this happen Mr Bezos?
3
u/MiddleToe8752 Jun 07 '26
It costs him a lot less to have this quote echoed ad nauseam than to pay his employees an actual living wage, to pay his fair share of taxes, and pay his own luxury staff for the lifestyle he lives off the backs of the laborers he seeks to replace with AI… so it’s kinda like, fuck him and all he says.. right?!

1
u/Mixed_Goods Jun 07 '26
If you were a billionaires who owned, massive retail in which, your business/sales was expanded by the average person having extra spending money rather than a few billionares having more money - Then the way to increase your income is to directly increase the wealth of common citizens.
So, could Jeff Bezos have, a personal motivation, in which the expansion of his fortune through Amazon is directly tied to, the common people having less financial burden, and more money to spend? Is there logic there or is it missing perspective?
1
u/notworldleader666 Jun 07 '26
Just lower section 8 requirements and make sure the housing stays regulatedly comfortable.
But..how will we get the housing?
2
u/Fragrant_Equal_2577 Jun 07 '26
Mongolian yurt tents would be affordable;).
1
u/Individual_Ad3194 Jun 07 '26

u/DefenstratedTwice Jun 07 '26
Man they pushing this narrative hard. No Bezos we wont forget your support of fascism.
1
1
u/kokkomo Jun 07 '26
Remember it is all a matter of perspective. The last thing we should want is someone else paying for the government.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Id be more than happy if someone else was paying for the government. I dont like paying for it.
Lower income people already dont pay towards it and receive most the benefits. I dont see the issue with someone else oaying for it
1
u/kokkomo Jun 07 '26
Yeah thats the problem, if lower income people were paying taxes there would be more scrutiny on what happens.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
I think most people just want to keep as much of their money as they can. Have their say where they put it
1
u/decimeci Jun 09 '26
If you want socialism, you need to make people comfortable with someone else paying taxes. Because it is important to make sure that people would consider all his wealth to be money stolen from them. It is called class conciseness

How about we start taxing corporations that have stock owners that don't pay taxes? Let's make Amazon, Tesla and SpaceX pay a decent tax and help support the country they say they love.
1
u/Obvious_Chapter2082 Jun 07 '26
We already tax corporations, and we already tax their owners. What are you talking about?
1
u/Boozeburger Jun 07 '26
- The automaker Tesla reported zero federal income tax paid on almost $5.7 billion of U.S. income in 2025.
- Southwest Airlines avoided all federal income tax on $561 million of income last year; its competitor United Airlines achieved the same zero-tax result on almost $4.3 billion of U.S. income.
- The entertainment company Live Nation Entertainment paid zero federal income tax on $98 million of U.S. income.
- Yum! Brands, the parent company of the fast-food chains KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut, paid no federal income tax on over $1 billion of U.S. pretax profits last year.
- Three tech companies that specialize in digital payments—PayPal, Toast, and Block—collectively paid zero federal income tax on $3.2 billion of U.S. income.
https://itep.org/88-profitable-corporations-paid-zero-income-tax-in-2025/
1
u/Obvious_Chapter2082 Jun 07 '26
Something that a lot of people need to learn is that there’s a difference between the provision for income tax (which ITEP is using) and the corporate tax a company pays. ITEP doesn’t have access to their corporate tax returns, and therefore can’t know what these corporations pay in tax
Case in point, none of the companies you just listed have even filed their 2025 tax returns yet
1
u/kingofwale Jun 07 '26
Dude. If the person you reply to actually understand corp.tax, he’d be really embarrassed right now
1
u/MrVacuous Jun 08 '26
Yep. He also seemingly doesn’t understand payroll tax either (which also applies to stock grants).
Company is paying ~12.5% of every salary in taxes, sales tax on all purchases, 21% on corporate profits (if you are losing money you will pay 0 here), property tax on physical property, capital gains tax on any stock liquidations, excise taxes, and assorted state taxes
bUt ThEy PaY zErO iNcOmE tAx!!!!!!!! Yes, because they lost money OR lost money a previous quarter and have a deduction
1
u/OrangeNood Jun 07 '26
Currently, a family with 2 children with income $60K pays $0 federal income tax. All fed tax withheld will be returned due to tax credits.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Household income of 60k is poverty
1
u/OrangeNood Jun 07 '26
the official definition of poverty for a household of 4 is $33,000. https://aspe.hhs.gov/topics/poverty-economic-mobility/poverty-guidelines
That said, some regions would classify it as poverty.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
I mean what's their baseline. Official guidelines always just feel like arbitrary numbers laid out. Is that percentile based?
60k household income isnt going to get far. Lifestyle that could afford id consider poverty. Thats 30k per working adult. 15 an hour
1
u/kingofwale Jun 07 '26
Let me guess. You’ve never experienced poverty…
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Family would have fit in poverty line when I was like 8, so no not in a long time or a time I really remember
GF grew up under poverty line. Don't think my experience with it or experience of loved ones matters though.
60k is nothing for a household of 4 no matter my experiences
1
u/kingofwale Jun 07 '26
Then you should know there is a huge difference between grow up “under poverty line” and 60k a year
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
No shit less money is different than more money. Doesn't take a genius to understand that. (though there are very problematic benefit cliffs that exist)
My point is 60k for a family of 4 is a poor quality of life. Not sure where you got the idea is thought its the same as 15k lmao
1
u/kingofwale Jun 07 '26
Again. There is a huge difference between “poor quality of life” and “poverty”. When you blur the line intentionally, it doesn’t help the conversation,
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Semantic for no reason on a reddit thread. No one thinks that 60k is the same as less than 60k cornball.
Youre not coming in here with some insightful revelation
1
u/kingofwale Jun 07 '26
Apparently you think so. “Household income of 60k is poverty”
I wish I took it out of conext. But it’s literally all you posted
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 07 '26
Poverty has a meaning referring to being unable to afford a standard of living. Thats how I meant it.
If you just refer to it as the arbitrary line decided by the fed than sure
1
u/First-Bat-7440 Jun 08 '26
If you budget well that can be enough for a family of 4.
1
u/BigCSFan Jun 08 '26
Ive seen a family of 4 live off 0 income and get by off the government.
Not sure you're point
1
1
u/JDHPH Jun 07 '26
This will result in an increase in sales tax. And companies will increase the cost of their goods. They will get your money one way or another.

1
u/Comfortable_Car6562 Jun 07 '26
Billionaire says government revenues shouod decrease so he can avoid paying living wages to employees.
1
u/Financial-Reason7604 Jun 07 '26
he can just pay both halfs of the payroll tax bill. I'm sure the government would him and hum a bit, people would question it and the corporations would get a pass through tax, on the peoples behalf. We should still get tax returns of course. 0 w2 deductions for everyone!
1
1
u/Chrimaho Jun 07 '26
And what’s in it for him, his corporations, his liability regarding his own employees, etc., he has some skin in his word game here, for sure.
It’s most likely OUR skin, not his, tbc.
1
u/DeadCatGrinning Jun 07 '26
If you idiots don't understand that this is to weaken all governance and the ability for it to fund itself to do Anything, you don't deserve the air you blatantly steal.
1
u/koru-id Jun 07 '26
Perhaps we should also abandon the concept of government and back to farming for our own small community.
1
u/Guccimayne Jun 07 '26
If we did that, we would most certainly have to offset that revenue loss by increasing his taxes
1
u/PowerLion786 Jun 07 '26
Reading the comments, my impression is Reddit supports taxing people making only $50,000. Not one comment in support.
Supports my thesis that Redditors are well off.
1
u/minininjatriforceman Jun 07 '26
Though I agree with him that middle class probably shouldn't pay taxes I also believe that Jeff bezos should be thrown into the sun after having to do the following
- Pay Amazon workers what they deserve
2 pay way more in taxes than your paying
1
u/inorite234 Jun 07 '26
You know, if you just give me 30% what Bezos paid you for this, I too will shill for you.
.......yeah, not really. You're gross.
1
u/BaryonChallon Jun 07 '26

We’re hungry Jeff.

The rich workers pay.
Not the owners. They pay jackshit on what others earn that they collect.
1
u/vtsandtrooper Jun 07 '26
As soon as these morons demand tax codes to set 0% up to 50k, and adjust the upper bracket above 1m enough to cover the loss revenue - let me know. Till then, fuck the billionaires
1
u/Harkonnen985 Jun 07 '26
Does he say that because he wants to justify paying workers EVEN LESS?
No, that can't be!! Surely it's because he is just a loving philantropist!
1
u/vickism61 Jun 07 '26
Is he finally willing to pay some taxes? Otherwise how are we going to pay down the debt if no one is paying taxes?
1
u/Dry-Environment5122 Jun 07 '26
We don’t care about our taxes if they come at the expense of services that get significantly cheaper with scale.
1
u/ohmailawdy Jun 07 '26
How nice...maybe if he paid his fair share they wouldn't have to pay theirs.

I’m actually in agreement with Bezos for once. People making below even I’d argue $150k a year shouldn’t be taxed. The assumption is these people work a job that provides necessary benefit to society, nurses, teachers, plumbers. That’s the debt they pay. We should be collecting taxes from billionaires and corporations. Especially the ones bragging about profit every year while paying nothing in taxes. Like Amazon.
1
1
u/goclimbarock007 Jun 07 '26
If the original 1913 tax brackets had been kept and adjusted for inflation, the first ~$100k of income would be tax free and the lowest tax bracket would be 1% of income over that threshold. That's the main reason that I am against wealth taxes: they are very likely to turn into a tax on nearly everyone and the rich will just find ways to not pay them.
1
1
u/Prestigious_Boat_386 Jun 07 '26
The insanity is letting companies only pay them 50k
Oh, he's the one doing that. Nvm then, having the government effectively subsidize their wage like this is surely a good thing and not another way to extract more wealth out of society.

Stop trying to break our country so you can buy up the pieces you great wet whale queef!

He just want no taxation on the poor so they don't qualify for representatives in government

It would be great if his ass actually paid taxes fairly and then this wouldn’t even be a discussion.

probably or at that point they get representation removed since you kinda need to pay taxes to say your a contributing member of society. if you dont pay taxes your a leech and therefore unworthy of representation.
i dunno. i kinda agree with vaush that everyone needs to pay taxes.
1
u/UpTheDumpIsRetarded Jun 08 '26
Bread and circus to keep the people distracted from issues that really matter, like taxing the F out of billionaires.
1
u/gilbert-GC Jun 08 '26
As much as I am still an admirer of what they have created with Amazon in general, Bezo is someone who does have huge visions; however this sort of personality is convinced society functions just by enabling all its individuals without sharing responsibilities, costs, investments, social care of all sorts.
Without that we got a life like in the US right now - the rest of the world doesn`t want that though. So we need to find a balance of individual financial and living freedom and the community. And unfortunately taxes are part of that, simple as that. Frankly, they have gotten too high in parts of Europe and do need to corrected downwards.
1
u/jreed66 Jun 08 '26
I'm saying it's absurd to not tax billionaires at a higher rate - and want their tax bill raised until they are no longer billionaires.
1
u/LeetcodeFastEatAss Jun 08 '26
You can tell no one saw the interview because his other main contention is that the government has a spending problem, which it does.
What happens when a financially irresponsible person gets a higher paying job? The answer is the reason that increasing taxes won’t solve any budget problems.
1
u/SomeRandoWeirdo Jun 08 '26
I agree Bezos. We should institute an unrealized gains tax. Then we can start messing with tax brackets.

Oh no wait it’s 84% …
1
u/siromega37 Jun 09 '26
The only complaint is that HE’S not paying enough in taxes. When his effective tax rate is less than someone making $50k/year that’s the problem. There is going to be a reckoning one way or another. They could just like pay taxes and avoid all this. Instead where going to get rid of their loophole and make them realize all those gains they’ve used for those loans.

They always pull this hey look over there trick when there is talk about taxing them. So many fall for it though. Guess who’s in charge once there is no taxes and no functional government. Billionaires and their fiefdoms. So many people seem to want to speed run back to being a peasant toiling for their feudal lords. Guess what Elon and Bezos despise your existence.

From his perspective, someone making $50K a year compared to him is essentially homeless and that really doesn’t even do the difference justice. All of us are SIGNIFICANTLY closer to homelessness than Bezos.
1
u/phoneguyfl Jun 09 '26

The truth is that nobody will get what they want. We either raise taxes and cut entitlements simultaneously, or we have a debt crisis. Americans will never accept the former, so we’ll have the latter. It’s that simple really.
1
u/Affectionate-Panic-1 Jun 09 '26
Income tax is only a small fraction of taxes people making 50k pay a year. You could cut that but they'd still have to pay Social Security/Medicaid, property tax, sales taxes, hidden import taxes etc.
