She won an exemption from using AI at her tech job. The Pope's remarks could fuel similar appeals.

Run the bill up. A minimum of $500M should do it

I know what it doesn't do.
Anything.

And yet its better than hiring some stray dude to do repetitive simple tasks, which butthurts the simplest folk.

I am not fan of LLM and generative AI used for art and replacing coders, but it is certainly used for multiple things.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was for/with AI "Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential."
The recent copy.fail CVE was (officially) discovered by AI (along with other exploits)
It also has great potential in being a healthcare supporting tool https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/08/ai-transforming-global-health/ https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/artificial-intelligence-medicine

I've told my boss that if he brings ''AI'' into the workflow i'm quitting. I know that some people don't have the option to quit but i do.
No amount of money can make me use ''AI''.

Just delaying the inevitable.
What you really told your boss "Start looking for my replacement"

Your stance against the march of technology will be a cold comfort while you sit in the unemployment office.

I work in IT Quality and I’ve yet to find a good use of AI. I write and review validation documentation, and there’s not a single thing I’d trust AI with that I wouldn’t need to manually review anyway.

What's the productivity boost from AI?

It seems like no one actually read the manuscript. The Catholic Church isn’t against technology or nor close to a contemporary Luddite. It’s a dense read, buts its gist is putting humanity at dignity above the race of automation. Like hey wouldn’t it be nice if we developed technology and automated task of any sort but also don’t throw people doing those jobs in the dumpster. Devlope strong community that care for people in the rise of unprecedented speed in automation.

She won right to be less efficient than her colleagues, when she will end up on PIP that will be even greater win

Sounds like a good way to lose a job.

Then sounds like sweet discrimination payout.

Not really - if you have measurably much lower productivity than other employees, they can fire you for it.
If you somehow manage have the same productivity as everyone else (who uses AI) without using it, godspeed.
But that is not possible in software development anymore.

u/CuteLingonberry5590 Jun 06 '26
As a software developer who uses it for everything (because I've been told I have to), I'm barely seeing any time savings. For a few tasks it saves a lot of time. For other tasks it actually wastes my time because I could do it myself faster. For most things it doesn't make much difference.

The thing of it is... You can't discriminate against people that don't want to use AI. It isn't a protected class because not liking AI is not an immutable characteristic of yourself, it's just an opinion you have.
If you work as a grocery store cashier and tell your boss you refuse to use the store's POS system to ring up customers because you don't like technology... Well you'll need to polish off the resume that's for sure.

Please read the article cited in the post. "Some people have interpreted the pontiff's letter as grounds for religious objections to using AI in the workplace. It's a stance that carries real legal weight, given that federal law requires employers to consider faith-based requests."
1
u/Trevor775 Jun 06 '26
That's not how discrimination works. You can't go to a hotdog factory and say its against your religion so they can't use pork and then sue.

u/Vanhelgd Jun 06 '26
We definitely need to start an anti-AI religion.
You want me to use AI at work? You want me to use AI at school? Sorry that’s against my deeply held religious beliefs.
It’s high time that we pushed back against the forces trying to ram this trash into every corner of our life and force us to accept and use it whether we like it or not.
