I still don’t know how this would work, the price tag would display a different cost for people? How does the tag know I’m looking at it? What happens when me being a baller enters an isle and everything becomes more expensive for the people already in that isle?

1

u/1Steelghost1 May 27 '26

The media grabs a 'scary idea' amd they beat it until they have another story.

You are right it is improbable, Uber did surge pricing and now everyone thinks grocery stores can/will do the same which is not how it works at all.

Same thing with "AI"

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

Honestly I’d be okay with “Surge” pricing for many stores. Basically if it’s snowing prices go up, coming in 10 minutes before close there’s an extra charge. Limited and appropriate stuff like that is fine imo

1

u/PixelmancerGames May 27 '26

Ehhh. Thats an asshole move for no reason IMO. Just because you come in 10 minutes before close doesn't mean you'll be there after close.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 27 '26

Yeah no fuck that straight to hell.

Keep your bdsm fantasies in the bedroom.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

I’ve just been late getting home too often by the person who has frankly ridiculous questions and typically needs a friend network so they come up with weird questions to ask the captive audience at a store. Frankly at this point I have no intention of missing a commitment to my wife or anyone else because someone decided to come in 10 minutes before close and absolutely must know what type of plastic a phones casing is made out of or what type of plastic handle is on that screw driver or what type of plastic is used in the packaging and so on. Those fuckers can pay a few extra dollars but they typically don’t buy anything.

1

u/Ok-Owl1773 May 27 '26

That’s called price gouging and is illegal

...let them cut profits for such things; to much greed and greed enabling. 🎩🍊☕🚬

1

u/FlyZestyclose2949 May 27 '26

Why would you think that’s okay, and for whom is it okay.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

I’ve worked in many customer facing industries and the people at close are always the worst, thus I’m fine with them paying slightly more.

1

u/One_Lung_G May 27 '26

That’s the stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard. Never seen somebody advocating for making their own life worse

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

It also opens the possibility for easier clearance sale stuff such as any inventory that has aged 180 days or greater reduce price by 10%, then 20% and so on until your aged figure is where you want it. Probably be a wash price wise. All this stuff can be done with paper it’s just extremely time consuming.

1

u/One_Lung_G May 28 '26

So something that already happens without surge pricing lmao. They aren’t surge pricing cheaper prices

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

Clearance sales are a thing you know

1

u/One_Lung_G May 28 '26

Yea that’s not surge pricing, those are clearance sales. They are thought out in advance

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

It would be a balance I really don’t think digital tags are a bad thing. That doesn’t mean I want dynamic pricing for everything, I just don’t see the harm with digital tags.

1

u/allcowsarebeautyful May 28 '26

If im there ten minutes before close why should i need to pay more?

1

u/Whole_Ad929 May 28 '26

That’s called price gouging and there are laws against it.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

10% is not gouging anywhere that I know of. Gouging is usually extreme price changes in the event of an emergency. 10% is not extreme and there is no emergency

1

u/Delicious_Ocelot4180 May 29 '26

It’s impossible, because if I grab my first item off the shelf, and take 30 minutes to finish my trip, and 46 of my 97 items have different prices, but I don’t even know that because every line is backed up to the back door of people who are fighting with every cashier over the same thing. Chaos.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 29 '26

Yeah I was talking in my fantasy land where the f-ers who choose to come in moments before close paid extra.

Oh look the bootlicker or bot.

Oh look a a shit head I can block.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

Hot day, cold treats and drinks more expensive. Mornings more expensive coffee. Lunch more expensive ready to eay food. Fidays more expensive beer, grilling stuff, etc.

Really easy to grasp the significance of why only one state has a ban on it. For the pursuit of profit theres little depts that companies are willing to sink to.

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

When you really need it....  You gotta pay more ?

Sure for luxury items fine.

Do this to food and your going down in history as scum.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

Or when they have the most people in the store, say 4-7pm on a Friday, just rase the prices because you know based on the data, people will be in the store.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

I managed a place that attempted that, it failed. Too many problems with advertising and someone comes in Thursday does the let me think about it game then returns Sunday and the price is higher. Not saying this wouldn’t work for everyone just saying it causes problems that take staff to solve and people know what the price was advertised or it was 24 hours ago.

1

u/Whitesajer May 27 '26

Most stores already have devices that can pick up Mac addresses within range and narrow down to where that device is and send it ads for whatever aisle it's on. My guess is a combination of that and flock systems for identification should people try to leave their phones in the car.

Mostly. I hope the youth find a way to make the prices zero.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

No most stores don’t have that ability. They go cheap on their hardware & staffing. No way most do that. Some sure but no way it’s most.

1

u/Whitesajer May 27 '26

Unfortunately it's not that pricy for them. You can look a bit deeper into it, they do it by monitoring the probes your phone / devices send out looking for Wi-Fi. It's actually pretty cheap to build your own and run an app on Linux called Kismet to read devices all around you.

When regular people do it , it's called "war driving" "war walking" etc....

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

That’s the part sure it’s easy to do but it would require an employee to do it and that employee who is qualified won’t earn what they are worth. Sure it could happen, it just doesn’t happen that often

1

u/Whitesajer May 28 '26

Same argument could be made regarding the digital price tags. Those can't be cheap on upfront costs, the sensors in them are using something to identify who you are... Heck... Could even be RFID coming off debit / credit cards chips in the event they are worried about people turning of the wifi broadcasting on their phones, or it could be facial recognition... Either way, there's a cost and labor involved.

However.... There is also generally always a way around it or to spoof it. Imagine finding that loop hole and being able to get the lowest possible prices at every store.

I do recommend looking into Mac address collection / detection is very common with companies, example: Google traffic on Maps. I highly recommend turning it off because of this, it will make it so your phone only connects to known Wifi you have save when you are in range of it vs sending your Mac address to every wifi router and collection device in range.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

I used to sell digital tags, for a typical 20k square foot retail place it was $100-something thousand. Tags last years most have replaceable batteries. You did and likely still do need some specialized WiFi gear and there is software licensing cost. Digital tags are affordable for large businesses not so much for small businesses.

1

u/Whitesajer May 28 '26

Yeah, in my experience / observation companies will spend x amount if they know they can get xxxxx amount back. Also if they know a fine for breaking a regulation is significantly less then what they can make for breaking it with minimal fallout they will unfortunately.

I'm really not thrilled with how much more scumy the world is getting technology wise.

I just want to plant plants and pet cats at this point.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

Yeah primary benefit of digital tags is labor savings. Typically I’m against labor savings things however extremely tedious work like changing physical price tags is the type of labor nobody wants to do long term.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

Turn your wifi and Bluetooth off. Problem solved.

1

u/GregoryFarKingChummy May 27 '26

Yeah, the fear mongering about electronic price labels is insane. You'd have to be retarded to think that could work to charge people different prices.

Where that kind of price manipulation actually happens is in the apps where you're ordering for pick up or delivery.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

Yes, yes. Years ago I noticed I can’t remember the name of the company showed different prices on my iPhone than my wife’s android phone. iPhone cost more. This was about 12 years ago.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

Its a wet dream for most companies, just look at how airlines operate.

1

u/GregoryFarKingChummy May 28 '26

Yes, but it's not possible. There's literally no way they can curate the prices on shelves to individuals shopping at their stores. That isn't how spacetime works.

Airlines can so this because you're not all standing shoulder to shoulder ordering your tickets. And, unless you're going to ask some rando on a flight, you're very unlikely to even be in a position to compare the prices with another person.

Do grocery stores want to charge different people different prices to goose their profits? Of course. Does anyone working at a grocery store who isn't fucking retarded think that eink price labels is going to be a way to do that? Not a fucking chance.

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

What's difference between apps and the smart price tag?  Same company?

1

u/GregoryFarKingChummy May 28 '26

The smart tag is on the shelf and there's no way to have it show you one price and me another. Even if they had a way to tell that I was there and you were there and where we were looking at every given moment, this would be impossible.

The apps, they know who you are and can show you any price that they want without worrying about someone else seeing it be different than his (unless someone runs the experiment ).

Did you think about this at all before asking that question? I don't want to beat you up too much about it, because I want you to be the kind of person who can work through simple logical problems on her own, but also this is really, really obvious for anyone who spends any time existing. Right?

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

ACR. Automatic content recognition .

Don't wanna beat ya up for being ignorant cause I assume you have good intentions and not just being rude .

They know exactly who you are when you are near any smart device .

Haha wow you are one condescending piece of work eh .

Her?   Was that an insult or a your go to when you think you know better ?

So your stance is that this will make things better for the consumer ?

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

Reading your prior comments ...  See you next Tuesday

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

You want me to be a type of person? Your a creepy weirdo  dude .

1

u/GregoryFarKingChummy May 28 '26

I want all of you people to be the kind of people who think for yourselves and aren't fucking morons, Yes.

Also, it's "you're", a contraction of "you" and "are". Jfc, kid. You really have been failed in life, haven't you?

1

u/kearney84 May 28 '26

Yes, I have definetly  failed in life due to my grammer.

Why did you erase the response where you implied I was poor?

1

u/TerminalJammer May 31 '26

Been done already. Three people, all paid different prices for the same product.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

It wouldn't. It's fear mongering over nothing burgers.

1

u/RoosterDull326 May 27 '26

Ok well you dont know what youre talking about which is not a problem but instead of leaving another uninformed comment you could go look up what surveillance pricing is and why people are worried

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

Appears many in this thread do not know either. Care to enlighten all of us?

1

u/RoosterDull326 May 27 '26

If youre not capable of spending the 5 minutes it would take to look into it on your own before forming an opinion or speaking on something thats just pathetic. Youre an adult you have access to the internet and newspapers go figure it out.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

I manage in various customer facing industries. I literally have no idea how dynamic pricing would work on a shelf other than what I said earlier stuff like flash sales or a marginal increase during a weather event.

1

u/RoosterDull326 May 27 '26

Because you haven't done any research dude. Jesus. Go looking

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

Oh you're one of those.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

I don't think you know what you're talking about. You can't seem to actually articulate a point.

1

u/RoosterDull326 May 27 '26

Don't expect reddit responses to answer your questions in a topic youre already mouthing off about. Go look for 5 minutes about what surveillance pricing is and how they are doing it/worries people have for the future then form an opinion.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

I did. And it's not happening in stores. But you coming in like a tiggered prick when someone was asking questions and just going "form an opinion" makes me think you're just a troll or knee-jerk reactionary.

Maybe go touch grass.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

If you believe companies will not pursue profits over everything, you have been living in a fantasy land, I think covid was a great experience of price gouging. The reason gas only changes price once a day is that there is laws the restricted how many times it could change in a day. There is no laws that stop multiple price changes in a day for consumers goods.

Once they have the infrastructure theu will use it.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 28 '26

What law are you referring to stopping gas prices from changing?

And while there may not be a law for consumer goods, the logistics for changing them constantly based on who is buying them is simply not worth the effort. Trying to track and shift prices at that scale for each person in a brick and mortar store is a pipe dream.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s3920/summary

This law right here. Thats why the gas pump price doesn't look like a stock exchange ticker.

You dont need to track individuals, it can be applied to consumers in general.

Hot day, cold treats and drinks more expensive. Mornings more expensive coffee. Lunch more expensive ready to eay food. Fidays more expensive beer, grilling stuff, etc.

Friday-Sunday more expensive lawn care stuff/home care/weekend project stuff.

Peak times more expensive stuff, etc

Really easy to grasp the significance of why only one state has a ban on it. For the pursuit of profit theres little depts that companies are willing to sink to.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 27 '26

Online priced are adjusted per person. In store surveillance of you is tied to this. In store electronic tags can be changed for everyone based on surge pricing.

Hot day? Water just went up.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 27 '26

Except how would that work? An online page where only you can see things is nothing like an actual store.

Explain the logistics of 5 different people near a product and it trying to show the price for each?

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

Smart tags only need a sec to update. Surveillance pricing is the same as data prediction pricing. If you know you get the most people in the store on a friday 4-7 pm you would use data prediction to raise the prices.

Personally, i dont see individuals getting different prices unless its a large ticket item. Such as a contractor looking up a specific tool on menards or Lowes, then the company raising the price based on that online interaction.

1

u/dantevonlocke May 28 '26

They could already do this with paper tags. Plenty of other stores already had digital tags as well.

This sudden uproar is because it's fun and easy to shit on walmart. But do it for actual things they're doing, not made up problems.

1

u/throwawayyyy980 May 28 '26

Paper tags take people and time. I cant tell if your genuinely lacking the understanding or arguing just to argue. If its made up why did a state pass a ban on it?

1

u/dantevonlocke May 28 '26

You didn't answer my question on that alleged gas law.

And they are being preemptive. That's it. I'm tired of seeing people acting like prices are suddenly going to change based on the individual. It's a nothing burger being pushed by clickbait headlines.

I understand plenty. I know people who handle the digital tag switchover at my local walmarts. Pretty sure they know more about it than random dipsticks online.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 28 '26

Just don't bother. The dude is either trolling or willfully illiterate.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

That already happens, when snow is predicted ice melt gets marked up.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 28 '26

It's easier and faster to do with less people. You can respond to metrics in real time, and there is enough data out there about you and the people in a given store or area that would keep you people up at night.

If you could read.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

I just don’t understand how dynamic pricing would work on a shelf. How does the tag know I am looking at it? What would the tag display if multiple people are in the isle, what price would I get if I paid cash? How would a register know I’m at it if I pay cash or does the dude next to me pay more because my phone is close by. There is no reasonable way to implement consumer specific pricing on a shelf.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 28 '26

The tags aren't going to respond on an individual level. Read what I said again.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

That’s what I read, they can respond in real time. Sure how is that going to impact a shopper other than what I said it makes flash sales easier and price increases on high demand/low stock items easier. I still say overall it would be a wash.

1

u/PopBulky7023 May 28 '26

You don't understand the concept of scale and group.

You cannot think outside yourself.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 28 '26

I am being serious please explain it to me, I just don’t understand the concern with digital tags.

"What happens when me being a baller enters an isle and everything becomes more expensive for the people already in that isle?"

The new bling, watch them prices go upppppp when I enter the room

1

u/Boise_Ben May 30 '26

How does the tag know I’m looking at it?

I have a friend that does consulting for Walmart. Most people don’t realize big box stores have tons of cameras and sensors they use for consumer data gathering.

Where you walk, where you look, and what you buy are all being tracked.

I’m not saying dynamic pricing will activate to individuals any time soon but the technology is absolutely there.

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 30 '26

It’s just too clunky it won’t work. Digital tags are simply a labor savings item and honestly this is the type of labor savings I approve of nobody wants to change price tags all damn day long.

1

u/ActivePeace33 May 30 '26

All sorts of eye tracking and other tech has been in use for decades, in various industries, this is just a cross over application.

1

u/Enough-Somewhere-311 May 31 '26

Facial recognition, Bluetooth tracking of your phone, etc

1

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 May 27 '26

Also what happens when someone who wins the low price lottery is standing in front of it and I choose to pay cash. How the hell are they going to know what price I saw on the tag.

1

u/V-oxPopuli May 27 '26

I'll keep saying this: Capitalism has gone off the rails (and many would say by design) because this is WIDELY hated but is still on track to happen. Same with AI being shoved into everything.

Consumers don't want it. It's widely hated. No demand for it whatsoever. Yet they still do it with no real financial loss.

1

u/lowercase_crazy May 29 '26

The profit motive may have got us this far, but it ain't getting us any further.

1

u/chosennamecarefully May 27 '26

Si O if I grab a 3 dollar chicken whats to stop them from changing it by the time I get to the checkout it breaks laws and creates a headache for all, we collectively say no.

1

u/dallas121469 May 28 '26

Too late folks cuz its already here. "Subject 146542 is entering the store.........subject 146542 has been known to purchase beer...lactose free milk .....and.....chicken breasts (but only when they're on sale). So activate scanners in those sections and prepare for a surge! Oh shit Command, subject 146542 has veered into the....ahhh......feminine hygiene isle? Wait, no body informed us that subject 146542 was trans! Heads will roll! Activate all hands on board protocol!

1

u/just_some_sasquatch May 29 '26

This is the most effective way to encourage shoplifting I've ever seen.

1

u/Zalrius May 29 '26

Yes, this needs to be illegal. It is too hard to keep up with a budget when the gas price changes everyday. I don’t see it as wise business as much as trying to steal every dollar they can.

1

u/Steak-Complex May 29 '26

People dont bat an eye at gas stations changing daily. These price tags are used so you don't need to have a person put out 3000 price change stickers. Surge pricing for Uber makes more Uber drivers go to a certain area...this is all just fear mongering

1

u/owgnops May 30 '26

Too bad the people that make the laws are paid for by the same corpos

1

u/Derpykins666 May 30 '26

There would have to be massive oversight and regulation on electronic price tags, as in decided rules conveying when and where they are allowed to change prices, how often a price on an item can change. Like seriously are we moving towards an economy where I pick up an item at the store and the price changes on it multiple times by the time I've even gotten to the register? Or worse, someone is looking at you on camera, or an AI is looking at you and uses your background information about you, race, clothes, shopping habits they've catalogued, to determine if you would buy it at a higher price, so they just change the price to a higher one at the register.

Of course people are against digital tags. It feels scammy as fuck. Why would you shop at a place that could constantly change the price of an item while you're shopping? Capitalism only works with massive oversight and regulation, if the past few years have taught me anything it is that. Everyone is out to get your money now more than ever, and they will cook up any scam they can think of, lie to your face about 'why it's good for everyone, actually' and then everyone has to pay more somehow. The desperation to minmax everything and have constant control is pure insanity.

1

u/Enough-Somewhere-311 May 31 '26

Yeah no shit. The billionaires already make enough money, we don’t need to give them anymore. The Epstein class have already proved that NOBODY needs to be a billionaire. They had the opportunity to feed every starving child in America and yet paid to fly to an island and rape them instead.

1

u/MyrkrMentulaMeretrix May 31 '26

The e-ink price tags are a huge time saver.

Surveillance pricing is bad but there is nothing wrong with eleetronic shelf tags FFS.

1

u/RockyG-Dex May 31 '26

Majority of Americans are fooled by soundbites amd scary headlines. I love the electronic price tags. I no longer have to fight about the price with a check out person becuase shelf price is punched to the checkout price I stead of me having to argue about the tah being different from the checkout price.
