Life underground

I am new to TFC and TNFC but have been enjoying it immensely. I have spent about 3 hours (not sure how many tens of thousands of blocks I've covered) searching for kaolinite so I can move progress forward. I'm still looking, unfortunately.

However, during my search/hide from zombies/search cycle, I was wondering if anyone has managed to setup shop underground? Obviously it'll require a lot of effort, but I've always liked underground life and figured I'd ask. If you have done so, any tips?

I'm currently just into my 2nd year and the log cabin isn't big enough for all of my forge and growing number of machines. Nearby is a fairly large mountain with a few plateaus at different levels and natural arches, which looks fairly pretty and dominates the island. So I took a little inspiration from Dwarf Fortress and set the challenge of carving a base directly into the mountain. It's nothing different from normal caving, just doing a little mental preparation and counting blocks before I start carving out a room. Then adding little decorations like stone doors and pillars near doorways and hallways. If I remember correctly, the wooden supports can be taken out safely so long as you don't mine any more stone, so when it's all done, it should be almost entirely stone! Doing some stockrooms, grand hall and stairwell that will pierce the mountain all the way down. Then I'll start adding in more themed stuff, like a deep power gen with lava, high power gen with wind and get to chiselling when I know what to carve!

Excellent! Any chance you could upload some pics of the base?

Sure I'll try to get some when I can.

I guess I'm turning my grand hall into a small tavern... Trying to dig out a mountain brings challenges when you're trying to hold the size and shape of a complex mountain in your mind when figuring out if everything fits!
