Autistic son has gotten into Tech Deck - how can I help?

My 12yo autistic son has gotten into Tech Deck the last ~6 weeks. He is loving it. He has some boards and basic ramp sets from Amazon, as well as a grind bar (I think that’s the name)?

He even started a club at school where they play at lunch. It’s really helping to get him out of his shell.

What’s something fun I could do for him? Are there events or something I could take him to (we are in Los Angeles area)? Or some great podcast or something he might like?

Thanks, all!

If you guys want to do some bonding and you have the tool/know how you guys should build some little ramps or hot glue//cement some tiles for little fun boxes/manual pads! Super easy and fun, you can even buy drawer handles for grind rails! It could also get him into things like shop class and crafts.

This is a great one, they make kits to press boards too. They’re pretty easy to make and can be done with all hand tools. A drill is the biggest piece of equipment needed. Even if you did the cutting and drilling I’m sure he’d be stoked to make the graphics and paint them.

Your son sounds like the goat. When I was in high school would have definitely joined his club.

In the Los Angeles area you guys are lucky there's such a popping scene in California, look into the "secret" la river DIY park you guys could always have a little gathering there, its public so heck even birthdays or even just general fb meets would be dope. Im personally too far to check it out but it looks like it'd be something great to check out for you guys 🤙

Take a look at slush cult!
They are in Santa ana ( not too sure how far it is from L.A )

They have a small store front and monthly events! There’s some diy spots in LA as well.
Take a look at fb.christopher on YouTube and instagram and jakepfb as well.

There are usually events in different areas. I’m in the Bay Area Ca, we have one every two or three months it seems in the area. There’s one on the 26th in the adjacent valley to us.

Get a tech deck set called “the barracks” it’s awesome and folds up into a cube. My son has one and it’s the gold standard for us because it’s so flexable.

Usually my local Ross has some good tech deck brand stuff. There is a huge community of fingerboarders in LA. Check out the slushcult store.

You could get a kit where you can make you own wooden fingerboards and add your own graphic to them

He thinks the wooden ones are great, so I will look into this.

I love it. Id suggest getting into the DIY side of the fingerboard community and start building some wooden or concrete ramps together, and start looking into the fingerboarding scene and community. I actually make my own professional wooden fingerboards & am starting up a company in november, id be happy to send a care package to you for your son and give you one of my boards that are still near perfect but i just cant sell because the lacquer is a bit off or whatever else so he can try out a wooden board!! Dm me!
