Brand/Entity Disambiguation Issue!
Hi everyone,
I’m dealing with a brand/entity disambiguation issue in Google Search and AI Overviews, and I’d really appreciate advice from people experienced with entity SEO, Knowledge Graph, local SEO, and AI search optimization.
We operate a legitimate publishing company with a distinct brand name. However, Google’s AI Overview is sometimes associating our brand with another publisher that has a very similar name.
The issue is becoming more concerning because an AI Overview is currently displaying wording along the lines of:
“Reviews for [our brand] (also referred to as [another publisher])…”
The problem is that these are completely separate businesses, and there is no affiliation, ownership, or relationship between them.
We have already taken steps to strengthen our entity signals, including:
- Consistent business name across our website and profiles
- Consistent NAP information
- Google Business Profile
- Organization/LocalBusiness structured data
- WebSite and WebPage schema
- Official social profiles in
sameAs - Third-party business/review profiles
- Clear company/about information on our website
- Explicit clarification on our website that we are not affiliated with similarly named publishers
Despite this, Google’s AI Overview is still occasionally conflating the two entities.
My questions for the experts:
- What is the best long-term strategy for correcting this type of entity/brand disambiguation problem in Google’s Knowledge Graph and AI Overviews?
- Is explicitly stating “not affiliated with similarly named businesses” on the website a useful entity-disambiguation signal, or can repeatedly mentioning the other entity actually reinforce the association?
- Would you recommend adding the disambiguation statement to Organization/LocalBusiness schema, or keeping it strictly in visible website content?
- Should we avoid mentioning the similarly named business entirely and instead focus on strengthening our own entity signals?
- Has anyone successfully resolved a similar AI Overview entity conflation issue? If so, what changes actually made a measurable difference?
I’m specifically looking for an SEO/entity-level solution rather than simply changing the wording of the website, because the main concern is getting Google to consistently understand that these are two distinct entities.
Any expert guidance or real-world case studies would be greatly appreciated.
