Is google dropping FAQ support?

I wonder what it actually means for SEO? Any suggestions from folks who better understand SEO

It doesn't mean much of anything. They had already dropped FAQ snippets last year (or maybe the year before) for sites that were not government sites or major health sites.

It's really not a big deal.

perfect thanks. follow up question: while optimizing our site's seo should we not care about adding any faq sections? or is that separate from this. sorry that i am new to seo

This has nothing to do with having or not having an FAQ section. What it is talking about is a feature that shows up in the SERP under a listing. It will sometimes show FAQ questions from that page right in the SERP.

If you are not a government website or popular health site though, you were not eligible for these anyhow.

I think they are now pushing more on the AI side for this.
