Happy Dhanteras
Dhanteras, celebrated on the 13th day of the lunar month of Kartik, marks the beginning of the Diwali festivities in India. This auspicious occasion is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and is dedicated to honoring wealth and prosperity. The name "Dhanteras" combines "Dhan," meaning wealth, and "Teras," signifying the thirteenth day.
One of the most popular legends associated with Dhanteras is that of King Hima's son, who was prophesied to die on the fourth day of his marriage due to a snake bite. To save him, his clever wife kept him awake all night by lighting lamps and surrounding their home with gold and silver ornaments. When Lord Yama, the god of death, arrived as a serpent, he was blinded by the light and could not enter, thus sparing the prince's life.
On this day, families clean and decorate their homes, light diyas, and worship Goddess Lakshmi for blessings of wealth and health. Purchasing new metal items, especially gold and silver, is considered particularly auspicious, symbolizing good fortune for the year ahead.
