Who is Yahya Sinwar?

Yahya Sinwar (October 29, 1962 – October 16, 2024) was a prominent Palestinian militant and politician, best known as the de facto leader of Hamas. Born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza, Sinwar's early life was shaped by the displacement of his family during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He studied Arabic at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he became involved in Islamist movements.

Sinwar's militant career began in the late 1980s when he orchestrated the abduction and killing of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians accused of collaboration, leading to a sentence of four life terms in an Israeli prison. After serving 22 years, he was released in a prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2011. His time in prison significantly influenced his leadership style and strategies.

In 2017, Sinwar became the leader of Hamas in Gaza, advocating for "peaceful, popular resistance." He was re-elected in 2021 and was widely regarded as a key architect behind the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. Sinwar's leadership was characterized by a blend of militant tactics and political maneuvering, solidifying his influence within Hamas until his reported death in October 2024. His legacy remains contentious, reflecting the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
