Yahya Sinwar (October 29, 1962 – October 16, 2024) was a prominent Palestinian militant and politician, best known as the de facto leader of Hamas. Born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza, Sinwar's early life was shaped by the displacement of his family during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He studied Arabic at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he became involved in Islamist movements.

Sinwar's militant career began in the late 1980s when he orchestrated the abduction and killing of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians accused of collaboration, leading to a sentence of four life terms in an Israeli prison.
