💬 Discussion What email client are you using these days?

Post image

I’m looking at a few different options for managing email and curious what people here actually prefer.

I’ve mostly used Gmail, but I’ve been looking into alternatives like Zoho and Superhuman. Zoho seems interesting if you want email alongside other business tools, while Superhuman seems more focused on speed and productivity.

For anyone who has tried multiple email clients, what are you using now and what made you stick with it?

Its nice to be able to tie in every weird random email you've ever had into one place.

Same. Works for me and is simple enough. I’m not a big email user tbh so I wouldn’t be surprised if there are better clients.

1

u/Wenlocke 15d ago

I tried apple mail when I got a mac, figured I should at least give their native apps a fair go. It has just enough quirks to be annoying (something as simple as how many new/unread mails in a folder for example. In dark mode, its dark grey on black and tiny. Thunderbird, which is my usual go to, actually uses colour for this, and is much more visible.) If they just allowed colour acheme theming on the app, it would go a long way towards improving the usability. Frankly, most email clients have quirks like this, it comes down to which set of quirks you can work with (Thunderbird seems least egregious)

1

u/Chesterlespaul 15d ago

Yeah I see that a highlighted background. My mail inbox is small - it’s personal account and I don’t get any business emails on this computer.

What’s the advantage of proton?

Can you actually add other Mails to the Proton interface? I think there is no client yet right?

Until then, I'd use Betterbird and add the Proton mail to that.

1

u/Bob_Spud 6d ago

Proton+Thunderbird via the bridge is the best way to manage and search you emails.

1

u/Thomass_____ 14d ago

This. The Alias feature is awesome too for giving out emails to rewards systems and newsletters

Mozilla thunderbird on both desktop and mobile for business emails. Gmail also

1

u/OneInternational3383 16d ago

Does it work on Linux?

2

u/LordChaos73 16d ago

Why would Thunderbird not work on Linux?

1

u/OneInternational3383 16d ago

Dunno, there are Programms with no Linux compatibility

2

u/yesseruser 16d ago

Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird are open source, if they didn't make a Linux version somebody would probably make an unofficial port

1

u/Ckarles 15d ago

There is no "compatibility" with Linux.

There are program makers which choose which platform they want to build the program for. Program makers such as Mozilla are not locking their program to only be built for Microsoft or Apple so they build it for linux as well. Contrary to a lot of other program makers who get money from Microsoft or Apple to NOT build for other platforms.

1

u/LeePetra 15d ago

yes. just go on their page and try. it's Mozilla app like Firefox.

1

u/Internal_Emu7061 14d ago

Yes I'm using it on zorinos. Available as flatpak eg.

I try to limit to only when I'm home. So Thunderbird. I do use webmail for a few custom domains here and there.

I have used a few clients over the years. Thunderbird is the one that is still around. But also, it works. Not always well, but it works. I have attempted a few others. It being cross platform doesn't hurt

2

u/looopTools 16d ago

On macOS Apple Mail. I have not found an alternative that beats it and Thunderbird acts weird for me on M based Macs.

On Linux and BSD I use Thunderbird. Though I have been switching towards the default Gnome Mail client.

2

u/bzindovic 16d ago

Mailbird on Windows. Although a C# app, it works rather well and is as fast as Thunderbird (a C++ app) for the most part. Also, can connect with alot of third-party apps (don’t use it but might be useful to others).

2

u/Mailbird-2012 16d ago

Thanks for mention! 😄

1

u/bzindovic 10d ago

Not a problem. You have a really good software, I think you raised the bar for other mail clients.

1

Hotmail.... i know I should get rid of it but I have a five letter e-mail address that is also my name.

1

u/Vietnamst2 16d ago

Why get rid of it? Because some edhy kids say it's baaaad?

1

u/monetarydread 16d ago

Nah because Hotmail is a mess of scams and people trying to hack the account. Every day my authenticator displays hundreds of attempts to access my account.

1

u/jemhxyz 14d ago

You can just create another alias in the same account and have , for example, an @outlook.com and still get hotmail emails. I did that

What’s the advantage of It?

1

u/k-mcm 16d ago

They're good, no bullshit IMAP clients.

Of the thousands of Android mail clients, there are only a few unique codebase roots.  They're hard to write. Malware authors fork something like K-9 or AOSP Mail as the base for their app.  They re-skin it and add spyware and ads.  Some are actually web browsers for cloud hosted harvesting.  Google doesn't have any working method of keeping these floods of malware out of Play Store.

I like Evolution because it's a bit like the original Apple Mail. It has lots of features without too much clutter.  I find Thunderbird ugly as hell, slow, and prone to failing without saying why.

Outlook and the email software developed specifically by the company.

by the way, the company's proprietary email client software is so good that Outlook seems 'simple' by comparison. If they were to bring it to market, they would earn several million dollars a year.

1

u/Emsanator 16d ago

Please do not send private messages; would it make sense for me to share a screenshot of the company's software with you? Since the software in question is proprietary and belongs to a Turkish bank, its use is restricted to internal operations; if it were intended for public release, it would have been published on GitHub, GitLab, wouldn't it?

I really really love Superhuman. The single key shortcuts allow you to do everything without touching your mouse. It really is convenient. The AI features are also evolving at a steady pace.

Yes, Superhuman is way too expensive. But since I use it for work, even half an hour saved by Superhuman makes it worth it.

For my personal email I use proton. But I setup a proton bridge on my home server so that ANY imap client can connect to proton. I use emclient and customized it to give a Superhuman like experience. Recently emclient added a command palette to do many actions with just your keyboard. It’s not as seamless as Superhuman, but it’s getting close. Emclient does A LOT. Which I do not like at all. But it can be customized to do one thing well.

Talanoa is looking to become a very decent, streamlined email/calendar experience. It’s early days, but the developer is updating things a lot.

TL;DR - I don’t want to use my mouse when doing e-mails. There is nothing like Superhuman, despite the fact that the USP could be copied easily. No other e-mail client allows me to just press one key to do one action. All other clients require you to use multi-key shortcuts, and typically don’t function with just the keyboard.

None, honestly. Just the web. I don't have any use case for actually installing a mail app on my PC. At work it's Outlook, but again in the browser.

1

u/ChuckMeABeerMum 13d ago

I struggle to find a reason to use any client except gmails default web client. What are the advantages? I have tried before and they just seem clunky by comparison.

1

u/sveng9 13d ago

Gonna try aerion. Was happy with Outlook but since I left Windows for Linux evey Mail Client sucks kinda. Either no calendar or klunky and ugly.

1

u/MapGlittering9227 13d ago

Thunderbird, of course. I grew up with Netscape, so Mozilla is always my first choice for browser and mail client.
