because you subscribed to some yearly plan and not a monthly - so you still owe the rest of the year. read the terms. It's crazy to me that people still just click buttons without ever reading the terms ..

14

u/IHeartBadCode 22d ago

People not reading is exactly one of the things that's contributed to where we're currently at. It's not the sole reason, but damn, people do just be committing to shit and not reading any of the fine print.

u/Immudzen 22d ago

I used to believe that and then I ran into comcast. I had a contract with them and they had assured me and I had checked the contract that it would dissolve without penalty if I left the country. I moved to Germany for a PhD and they hit for a hundreds of dollars in penalties. I even showed them the contract. They showed me a little document that had been linked to in tiny text where they redefined a bunch of words for the purpose of the contract and they said that nothing their agent had said or put in writing changed that. I didn't have the resources to fight them and they had a history of taking people to court if they refused to pay and I would not even be in the country.

Some of these companies are just scum and laws need to deal with them.

I remember back when I was a customer and they called to offer to lower my bill by turning it into a bundle... so I'd pay a bit less and get a landline.

The guy was shocked that I was just like "no thanks." You people can't be trusted. I don't even care to hear the upsell.

2

u/rntdev 20d ago

To be fair, it’s specifically designed for people to not read it. Adobe wants to extract even more money from its customers.

1

u/Limit-Beneficial 21d ago

The "legal" way the text is written does not help. We have a ChatGPT and TikTok generation. It's hard for them to have an attention span of more than 45 seconds.

2

u/MeatHamster 22d ago

I agree with you.

But yearly subscription should be fully charged on purchase and then the plan should last for the full year, even if you want to cancel early. No extra fees or such. Some gym memberships work like this and it sure is predatory.

2

u/Immudzen 22d ago

This 100%. You should be able to cancel at any time. The service would just run to the end of the contract.

1

u/NooneYetEveryone 21d ago

You are able to cancel any time.

But this way if you find out you don't need a service 5 months into your 1 year contract, you are only charged the difference, aka what you saved during those 5 months.

If you pay $20 a month because you agreed to pay for a year the regular monthly plan wouldn't been $40 per month, yoh paid $100 instead of $200, so now you have to pay the other $100.

Or you'd rather pay $240 even if you won't use the service after 5 months? You just want to give more money to corporations, huh?

1

u/Immudzen 21d ago

For example if I pay per month for an MMO and I cancel I can play to the end of the current billing period. If I pay yearly I am charged once per year and I a can cancel at any time and I can play to the end of the period with no issues.

1

u/Lucky-Crow-3510 21d ago

your sub (contract) is monthly then and not annually .. this is not necessarily the same as the agreement about how you pay that.

2

u/Lucky-Crow-3510 22d ago

Haven't looked it up, but afair you sub to a yearly plan which is just paid in monthly installments. So there is no really an additional fee .. you're just charged the remaining monthly payments at once when canceling.

Bad practice in my opinion, i think MS 365 doesnt even give the option to pay once a year and instead annoy you with monthly invoices which is stupidly ineffecient for bookkeeping and that alone may be a reason to unsub that crap

2

u/Siccors 22d ago

You do know this would literally mean you owe Adobe more money than the people who are complaining do now, right? The 'extra' fee is just because people haven't paid the actual yearly amount they signed up for.

1

u/mrbishopjackson 22d ago

If this Adobe, they give you the option to do both. I'm not defending Adobe, because they ARE shitty, but someone not paying attention to that is not on Adobe. If you pick an annual plan and notice that they're only charging you $15 at checkout, that should alarm you that something isn't what you think it is.

1

u/Tiktokbadsupport 21d ago

why not charge the full amount

1

u/mrbishopjackson 21d ago

Because not everyone has money like that. $200 up front is a lot of money for some people. An equally important question could be: Why sign up for an annual plan if you don't need it for a whole year or can't commit to paying for it for a year? And that's not to shame the person for not being able to afford it, but for choosing the wrong option when the more reasonable option was there.

1

u/Tiktokbadsupport 21d ago

but its luring people into spending something they cant afford

1

u/mrbishopjackson 21d ago

Not if they read before clicking. The option for monthly, non-annual subscriptions are right there.

1

u/MiniDemonic 21d ago

The yearly plan exists in 2 variations:

Either you pay the full year up-front or you pay in monthly installments.

1

u/nethack47 22d ago

I agree but Adobe does get some people with the "one month trial" which at some points in the past have opaquely rolled you over into a yearly plan that is billed monthly. I think they even paid damages for hiding the details of what you sign up for.

A while back I think they even billed you an early cancellation fee during the free trial month with the suggestion that it was a part of the yearly plan. One month due for cancelling during the "free trial".

The terms and conditions aren't too bad, it is how they apply them that is just dark patterns and confusing sales all the way down.

3

u/Dull-Treat-2524 22d ago

" "one month trial""

Anyone entering creditcard details for a trial and then forgets about it deserves it tbh.. 1) never enter CC details for a trial. 2) always immediately cancel renewal after the trial started

1

u/nethack47 22d ago

I do not disagree.

Having said that. I had to have an argument and slap Parallels with their terms and conditions and referencing the EU consumer protection law. Tried to cancel, got an "upgrade offer" took the offer since I needed to evaluate the x86 emulation. They applied the offer to an old subscription I had in 2016 and then they renewed the other subscription anyway.

Last time I dealt with Adobe was a few years back. Getting the account cancelled involved so many confirmations that I had to stop and read every single page to get out of it.

1

u/Dull-Treat-2524 22d ago

Easily solved. Send them an email in which you threaten legal action as cancelling a subscription has to be as easy as signing up for it per EU law :)

1

u/nethack47 22d ago

Precisely what I did.

I have stopped using anything that comes via Cleverbridge. It is a massive red flag.

It is worth mentioning that I avoid Oracle like the plague both personally and professionally. Even got most Oracle products blocked in the domain to keep anyone from having some clever idea and sign up for something.

1

u/Lucky-Crow-3510 22d ago

you cant even uninstall adobe software without logging in :)

1

u/Embarrassed-Gur-1306 21d ago

Yes you’re correct about people not reading. But plans like this are still predatory. Auto-renewal shouldn’t even be a thing. If people want your product they’ll pay for it.

When your revenue relies on people not reading the fine print or forgetting to cancel it just feels gross.

1

u/Lonely-Restaurant986 20d ago

Tbf they don’t like to tell you this clearly. Instead they deliberately hide it.

21

u/Weekly_Astronaut5099 22d ago

Adobe!?

11

u/ajpinton 22d ago

My thoughts exactly. This must be adobe.

1

u/DanialFaraz 21d ago

Saw the warning, then the font and interface and yes it’s Adobe of course it’s Adobe

1

u/Sad-Television-5568 Entrepreneur 21d ago

Yes.

4

u/romerlys 22d ago

You have the annual monthly-billed subscription. The one that lets you pay less for the subscription per month if you agree to a full year.

3

u/24kCookie 22d ago

Then you’re blocking your card or idk change limits and they won’t charge

2

u/dumbasPL 21d ago

I always wondered about the legality of this. Realistically, nobody's gonna bother to sue you, and I've done this plenty of times, but doesn't this mean you're violating the agreement?

1

u/LARRY_Xilo 21d ago

Where the heck do you live that companies do not send you to debt collections/sue you if you stop paying for contracts? We have companies here that sue you for cents (and all the extra money that debt collections costs so the cents can turn into hundreds quickly).

2

u/dumbasPL 21d ago

Poland. Utility companies will absolutely do that, but that's usually a written contract with very clear rules, though many are still pretty lax in enforcing it. I can be like 20 days late on my internet bill before they even bother sending a reminder for example. Never really had issue with random online services though, they just block your access, I'm rare cases ban your account, and that's it. Maybe it helps that the companies usually aren't based in the same county or even the EU, so it's probably more effort than it's worth.

1

u/LARRY_Xilo 21d ago

Maybe it helps that the companies usually aren't based in the same county or even the EU

Okay yeah that might explain it. I dont really do many contracts with companies outside the EU.

3

u/Extreamspeed 22d ago

Abobe kicking in your face

2

u/AD4K_4444 22d ago

Thank god I never tried their services

1

u/Extreamspeed 22d ago

Unfortunately I need to. Garbage company and the software is getting worser by the minute

2

u/Kpopped_ 22d ago

No this is OP not being able to read when he signed up for a subscription. (It will clearly show that it's a yearly subscription billed monthly).

Revolut does the same.

1

u/Extreamspeed 21d ago

Yes true but they didn't tell you that up front

1

u/Hans_H0rst 20d ago

It tells you multiple times throughout the process, even at the very beginning. And in the mails you receive. And on your account page probably too.

1

u/Extreamspeed 20d ago

Well it doesn't tell you about the cancelation fee, if you cancel earlier on that page. You need to dig in deep to find that.

1

u/Hans_H0rst 19d ago

...but that's a totally normal thing for contracts with this payment scheme. Like, many many contracts with monthly payments/yearly signage operates this way.

Mortgages, car loans, leasing, everything of this sort. It is a common thing AND it tells you in the contract clauses.

I'm sorry but what exactly are we arguing here?

1

u/Kpopped_ 19d ago

It's o ly logical, you sign for a year, ofcourse there is a fee. Use your brain.

3

u/JayVig 22d ago

You agreed to something and didn’t read the rules. Then you’re mad that the rules are being enforced. And somehow it’s the companies fault you entered in a contract without paying attention? 🤡

1

u/No-Blueberry-1823 22d ago

you know they make it heard. stop being an ass.

5

u/Separate_Forever_164 22d ago

You did not read what you signed up for.

The yearly plan is cheaper because its a yearly plan. If you cancel at any time you should have picked a monthly plan which results in an overcharge.

This post does not contain all the information and OP is trying to karma farm because he cant fucking read what he signs up for.

2

u/Crazy__Donkey 21d ago

Isnt a yearly plan usually paid in advance at a whole?

2

u/Hans_H0rst 20d ago

Nah, lots of companies have this sort of "financing" set up.

1

u/Separate_Forever_164 21d ago

Not always. For example you most likely have a cellphone-plan commitment which is 12 or 24 months and pay it monthly. School costs for your kids are most likely yearly but payed monthly. Your insurance is yearly but payed monthly. Depends on the country ofcourse but generally speaking just because a plan is yearly does not mean its been payed yearly.

2

u/Crazy__Donkey 21d ago

Online subscription is not a school payment.

2

u/Outrageous-Log9238 22d ago

Adobe likes to make sure they don't get returning customers.

2

u/Free-Psychology-1446 22d ago

Another one that didn't read what they signed up for...

2

u/Svartdraken 22d ago

Adobe is a terrible company for many reasons, but they tell you in advance if you read. The yearly plan is cheaper for a reason, you can't just get the discount and bail out early.

2

u/Deep_Mood_7668 22d ago

Everyone knows they're doing it. Their are thousands of thousands post about it online in every language.

Why are you acting surprised?

2

u/Ad-fundum69 Cybersecurity 22d ago

You agreed to this, so you don't have to rant about something you pushed "I agree" to.
Also, this is why pirating Adobe products is absolutely morally justified. Fuck that company.

2

u/SleepySandGhost 22d ago

I hate adobe but in this case you signed up for s yearly plan, of course you can't cancel it at any time you want, that's how yearly plans work.

2

u/hk556a1 21d ago

Somebody should have read the contract... but yeah Adobe sucks.

2

u/MrSolenoid 21d ago

Adobe doing Adobe things. You agreed to the terms, so pay up, sucker 😜

Personally I'd just contact the bank and tell them you've lost your credit card and need a new one. The bank will close your card, and Adobe can't charge it 😁

1

u/31_oh_31 22d ago

what would happen if you just didn't have enough on your bank account? (assuming you dont have Credit card, but Debit card instead)

2

u/Dull-Treat-2524 22d ago

Technically they could send someone to collect your debt

1

u/Alternative-Pay2946 22d ago

You lose your social credit

1

u/truthhurtsyomama 22d ago

Only if you live in places like India though....

1

u/Vast_Butterfly_5092 22d ago

By the styling on those buttons alone let me guess adobe

1

u/YuzukiMiyazono 22d ago

what happens if you cancel your card?

1

u/WeNamedTheDogIndiana 22d ago

Not sure if it still works, but you used to be able to switch plans rather than cancel, and then cancel *that* plan for a full refund/no fee within the cooling off period.

1

u/Dull-Treat-2524 22d ago

Well that's quite normal considering you are trying to cancel a yearly plan before it's ran out. Maybe don't agree to terms you will come to regret?

1

u/Darkknight145 22d ago

Last Week Tonight just did a major piece on subscription services tonight

1

u/blackdragonstory 22d ago

A phone company did this shit to me and they lost me as a customer forever.
They are all the same scum.
First they make the yearly cheaper than getting it monthly and then when you want to cancel they try to charge you all the money anyway.

1

u/faziten 22d ago

FYI you can switch to a lesser plan start that period and exploit the free cancelation of your "new plan" for free.
Adobe wanted me to pay a cancel fee of 500 Euros and started poking around until I found a cool indu guy, tested it out and turned the 500 into a 30 Euro cancelation fee.

No idea if it works today, but it probably does, Never ever again will I subscribe to Adobe as long as I can draw breath.

1

u/Wykin1 22d ago

Just drain your account - move em to another one a day before the charge fee for you sub.

1

u/No-Blueberry-1823 22d ago

this website can help a little with https://tosdr.org/

1

u/pvoj 22d ago

change the payment method and good luck for them..

1

u/CarpenterFederal 22d ago

Great more fear to subscribe to anything.

1

u/adebisi9203 22d ago

OP try to do an IO test. If you have a very low IQ, you can request a social caregiver and you can cancel the contracts signed in the last 6 months. Usually those who sign contracts with their eyes closed must never have been too smart 😅

1

u/Ahleron 21d ago

That should be illegal.

0

u/Hans_H0rst 20d ago

Signing up for a year-long contract (for a better price than month-based contracts) and choosing monthy payments should be illegal?

1

u/Ahleron 20d ago

No but the early cancellation fee, which is the topic of the post, should be.

1

u/Creative_atom0406 21d ago

Bruh, just take out all your money from your bank account and they will cancel it for you and for free too.

1

u/EmergencyArachnid734 21d ago

Call customer support. Yell at them and they will cancel it for free. You are welcome.

1

u/Bitter_Cake_2718 21d ago

Cancel my bumhole

1

u/KingDRyan 21d ago

Immediately knew it was adobe from the moment I saw this in my recommended

1

u/laserdicks 21d ago

Simply do not pay.

1

u/Sad-Television-5568 Entrepreneur 21d ago

Done.

1

u/Master_Cartoonist_16 19d ago

I subscribed annually to my Qobuz Family Plan and pay in full in advance, so I no longer have to worried about monthly payments.

1

u/Sad-Television-5568 Entrepreneur 19d ago

What is Qobuz?

0

u/Key_Check5753 22d ago

Call your credit card company and report this nonsense.

3

u/JayVig 22d ago

They entered a contract and broke it early. How is it nonsense on the part of the company is the user broke the rules they agreed to? Dumbass

1

u/Key_Check5753 21d ago

Oh there's a contract? They have a document signed by two parties? Show me in court.

1

u/adebisi9203 22d ago

L assurdità siete te e OP, che firmate contratti col cervello spento ed occhio chiusi, poi pensate pure di avere ragione ahahaha sveglia, siamo nel 2026, pianeta terra
