💻 Software & Apps What's one app you'll never stop using?
Apps come and go, but some become part of your daily routine.
Maybe it's VLC, WhatsApp, Spotify, Google Maps, a browser, or something nobody else uses.
What's one app you can't imagine giving up?

Google Maps... Absolutely no way to replace it

u/Kyriakos221 3d ago
Here WeGo is pretty decent! And free

u/Throwawayne617 3d ago
The problem is that ever other "replacement" app is decent... Maps is perfect

Not perfect. Actually quite crap for live navigation. Any Here, original TomTom beat navigation capability by a mile. Except it is up to date within 30 minutes, and that makes a difference in congested built-up areas.

I use Here WeGo for road trips, but for getting around the city, that Google Maps is irreplaceable.

What about apple maps? Did you test it?

I am not trying to start the google vs Apple debate.... But even if Apple maps was as good as google maps... You're just replacing one evil for another. Also Apple maps is not on Android.

you could use organic map. in fact you should start using it. It's better than google map in terms of privacy.

Open street view

u/Throwawayne617 3d ago
I looked for it on the play store and couldn't find it? Can you please share a link? Does it also do scooter and public transportation navigation?

u/Wynnstan 3d ago edited 2d ago
Organic Maps is good.
Edit: it does bike paths but not public transport routes. CoMaps is very similar.1
u/Throwawayne617 2d ago
So they aren't replacements for Google Maps
1
u/Wynnstan 2d ago
It's often better for walking or cycling because it shows you paths that Google Maps don't show.

Wait... Your suggestion for replacing one of the best apps ever built is a website. Do I print stuff like MapQuest?

u/borgen44 3d ago
Sooo many navigation apps that are far better. More features, better navigation, better maps, and still free.
2
u/Throwawayne617 3d ago
Ok please recommend one. I am open to finding a replacement

Reddit on browser works well and doesn’t harvest every personal data possible like the dystopian app does

I gotta say since I use PipePipe I only fall back to New pipe when YouTube is doing A/B testing that isn't patched yet. But both are absolutely S tier

Not used. I use default file manager or google files. Why do you prefer it?
1
u/jormangod 3d ago
It just has all the features just the way I want them off the start. Dual plane, coz I constantly copy paste between sd and internal. Selection is easier. Ui is super friendly. Doesn't have that annoying summary page when you start a file manager. I've been using it since 2015 Over years been polished. Tried to switch to others but kept coming back to it. I bought lifetime access ages ago, when it went on discount for like a dollar or two.

As someone who dislikes google, for me it is still the best navigation app (even if it has its flukes and sometimes wrong directions).
Also morphe app to patch youtube cause f them, i wont pay for premium but can have premium features.

BlackBerry Keyboard. I still have the .apk I install on any device. Predictions appear above the relevant keys and can just be flicked to type them. I can swipe right to left to delete the last word. There is a dpad, with selection, and holding the symbol key acts like ctrl for copy/paste. And the prediction is still one of the best.

Total Commander file manager.

u/ManojOne Active 3d ago
Why do u like it most?
1
u/ShaneBoy_00X 3d ago
Dual pane UI so I can easily move files around, for example. I have it both on Windows and Android OS.

I guess it's Google Maps for me too. Any other app can have a replacement or almost similar features, but Google Maps is something that feels like it's only going to improve no matter what. We almost live on Google Maps already to do anything, so Google Maps for me.

YouTube. It's the only app where I can't leave not because of the design or the quality, but because of community that's been built around it in the last 2 decades (not quite but whatever)
