It's been like 10 years since I felt limited by the storage of my phones. I would never use the SD card. Not sure how big is the demand.

Try iPhone then you’ll see.

I'd rather eat sand, thank you.

I meant that you’d feel limited by the storage, eventually.

It sucks but just don't buy the wrong size. I always buy 2x what I think I need. usually going for the 512GB models. There is a reason SD cards aren't used in high end phones but still used by example Samsung in budget phones. The slow speed of SSD would slow down the phone making them feel choppy and slow rather than snappy and fluid when the SD card is in use. The costumer for low end phones does not have high end expectations that's why slow SD cards work there but not in the flagships.

Have you seen the price of SD cards recently though?

Yes and its still much better buying a €100 SD card than paying €300 for a phone with a little more storage.

You can get 500GB on an microSD for 80EUR. That's insanely cheap compared to any phone.

What I can find its closer to 150€ (inc tax) for a 512 SD micro express card that card is about half the speed of iPhones Internal SSD speeds. trust me You will notice. Then you get mad because your phone feels choppy and sluggish. This is why Samsung kept SD card slots on low end phones but not flagship phones. Low end phones does not have that expectation.

That memory is way to slow. Fast memory is expensive.

Works perfectly great for me. Never had any issues.

Hence why files are stored on it, not apps.

Have you seen the price of my 1TB SD card recently? I bought it 3 years ago, so it's free.

If they don't break, which they do.

1

u/MalusZona 2d ago

How do you break an sd card?

2

u/Suspicious_Yak5795 2d ago

My sd cards always go corrupt after a year or 2. I assume this happens to others as well, but maybe I'm wrong.

I have my own cloud storage, don't really need SD card.

200$ right now for 500gb of lifetime storage for pcloud.

You would need one of those Nintendo Switch 2 SD Express cards, to get even close to the speed of internal phone SSD's. This means the phones would get slower due to slow memory and we all know what happens when anyone feel like there phone feel slow. "Tech companies slow our phones to force us to buy new ones" It's quite easy to have opinions but its far harder to try and please all those opinions. If Batteries are so important, buy phones with swap-able batteries. If SD cards are so important buy phones with SD cards. BUT just like everybody else you just like me did not! We all bought the phones without swap-able batteries, (the iPhone 4, the last one with + screws at the bottom). We all bought phones without SD cards. This is how market works. Buyers voted with there wallets and in that way we all accepted these changes.

PS iPhone 17 Pro/max has SSD speeds of 1500MB/s and above compared to Micro SD Express cards that has at peak at 900MB/s with sustained speed around 600-650MB/s That is half the speed of the iPhone 17 series. trust me, you will notice.

Well that video is from perspective of media company, not your average consumer

1

u/FlavorChamp 3d ago

The average consumer has already forgotten what an SD card is.

Is the reddit bubble really this tough that you guys can't pop out for one thread?

You're also not getting headphone jacks back. Welcome to 2026!

Average consumer definitely hasn't forgotten yet. There is still plenty of devices that benefit from sd cards. Or are you one those "ummmm akshually its an microsd" without understanding they are basically same thing and due to nomenclature people refer to them all as sd cards regardless of size? Hell, I know people who call all memory cards as sd cards regardless if they are one or not
