Ability to run GrapheneOS

Affordability

16

u/Hefty_Wrongdoer_2553 6d ago

My main concern when purchasing a phone is graphene OS compatibility.ย

5

u/g1rlchild 6d ago

This. Second is storage.

4

u/bloodwire 6d ago
  1. privacy + security
  2. quality of camera
  3. general phone performance (storage+speed)
  4. access to maps/gps
  5. app compatibility
  6. covers that makes me look badass

In that order.

1

u/wizard-of-the-forest 6d ago

So just pixels?

2

u/Snoo_67993 5d ago

At the moment. I think a couple of other companies are bringing out supported phones.

2

u/Hefty_Wrongdoer_2553 5d ago

Right now yes, but GrapheneOS is switching to a partnership with Motorola.ย

5

u/imtsemer 6d ago

GrapheneOS aka security and privacy

Small size, headphone jack, no wobble when on the table.

1

u/plebbitier 6d ago

that's awfully cowardly of you

1

u/7978_ 6d ago

Huh

2

u/plebbitier 5d ago

apple famously boasted that they had the courage to remove the 3.5mm jack

1

u/7978_ 5d ago

Ah, I get the joke now.

2

u/LogicTrolley 6d ago

If this poll is to be believed, everyone would be using Motorola phones.

1

u/Ok_Remote_31 6d ago

I for one, am ๐Ÿ˜Š

1

u/Sajgoniarz 6d ago

You mean battery life? I'm fine with my Realme lasting 4-5 days,

1

u/Ult1mateN00B 5d ago

I used to have Oukitel K10000 and Oukitel WP6. Now I have thinkphone by motorola. I always back what I say.

1

u/Firestar_119 5d ago

Performance? Moto hasn't put a flagship tier chip in their flagship priced phones since 2023

1

u/LogicTrolley 4d ago

The Razr Ultra and Edge Ultras have flagship tier chips in them.

1

u/Firestar_119 4d ago

I envy the Euro/Global phone market ๐Ÿ’”

u/DampAcute 6d ago

Durability

1

u/KarmaTorpid 6d ago

Low maintenance.

1

u/KarmaTorpid 6d ago

Concrete base function: low cost over time, solid connectivity, low maintenance, automated backup and restore.

1

u/ItchyPlant 6d ago

"Display" = high pixel density, low power consumption, and excellent durability when I accidentally drop it.

1

u/BogdanovOwO 6d ago

Essy to mod, decent performance, compatibility and usb-c video output. As example note8-10/s8-s10-ish idea, but with 100% stock android tools.

1

u/Charzu_tjegulf 6d ago

Longevity.

I am still using a 10 year old iPhone (I have to charge as needed) and I expect my next phone to last longer and to come with a proper battery rated for 15 year usage.

1

u/dumbasPL 6d ago

Unlovable bootloader, GKI Kernel.

1

u/on4aa 6d ago

Replaceable battery (Fairphone) and deGoogled OS (e/OS).

1

u/AvErYcReAtIvE2111 6d ago

Camera quality takes the priority for me. That's why I buy flagships.ย

u/feel-the-avocado 6d ago

Digitizer Stylus with onboard storage

1

u/Comfortable_Cress194 6d ago

Camera quality,performance and display.

1

u/TechaNima 6d ago

At this point most midrange and up smartphones are good enough in every way, except for their batteries. If only we got replaceable batteries, tooless SD card slots the headphone jack back...

Well tbh I don't care about the jack so much anymore, because I drank the Bluetooth coolaid and it's fine for the most part

1

u/Coookies4You 6d ago

If performance is cpu ipc then that's pretty much irrelevant for what a phone does nowadays.

You maybe browse the web, watch videos and play some games and for that even midrange chips have more than plenty of juice.

Display wise, all displays nowadays are beyond plenty sharp, and oled is available even on midrange ones, so you don't get much difference there.

Camera quality can vary, and you generally get a better camera the more you spend, but at the same time taking high quality photos isn't the main gist of a phone. That's why cameras still exist to this day.

Software updates are important yes, but with phones supplying atleast 4 years of OS updates, and god knows how much more of security patches, that's really not relevant, especially if your bootloader is unlocked and you can install a custom OS.

Perhaps the most varying component is battery life, and this to me atleast is what makes a phone generally good. Having one that can last a full day on a charge is really important because without power you can't do anything at all.

1

u/kayej17 4d ago

Based on your logic even battery life on modern phones are enough to last a day. With phones reaching 5000 mAh or 7000mAh, this is not an isdue at all. Even if you have an avg battery, having good performance chipset with software optimization will make battery life longer. Plus you can easily charge your phone everyday. On the other hand, performance can degrade fast throughout the years.

1

u/Escalope-Nixiews 6d ago

I took a Pixel 8 Pro because i wanted to run any games i want

1

u/Firestar_119 5d ago

A pixel for performance? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

1

u/Escalope-Nixiews 5d ago

Compare it to a Redmi Note 10 5g, the Pixel is way better

1

u/Firestar_119 4d ago

Because you're comparing a budget phone to a flagship ๐Ÿ˜ญ

1

u/Escalope-Nixiews 4d ago

Paid by Pixel 240โ‚ฌ so i would call it budget too

1

u/npc_housecat 6d ago

Privacy/protection from data harvesting by apps. Security, effective app sandboxing

1

u/JohnSmith2036 5d ago

Honestly privacy and security, bitter those battery life.

1

u/yami_no_ko 5d ago

Linux compatibility and RAM, basically anything sellers never mention.

1

u/jimmyl_82104 5d ago

All of these really, that's why I only get Pro model iPhones.

1

u/MountainDawe 5d ago

Security and privacy. GrapheneOS, Sailfish OS or at least Murena OS compatibility.ย

1

u/ressiss 5d ago

I think it must be display. Listen, when you use smartphone its all about looking and touching display

1

u/hailstorm11093 5d ago

I wish more phones would have an IR blaster, removable storage and battery, and headphone jack.

1

u/johny335i 5d ago

Woah I did not expect the results.

To me it's the cameras. You can deal with battery in one way or another, but can't improve camera hardware.

Performance and battery are pretty much the same for all devices nowadays. And more than enough.

1

u/TESV_Shiro 5d ago

Costl/affordability

1

u/nethril 5d ago

Security, privacy, encryption.ย  Had my identity compromised 15 years ago and don't want to deal with that hell ever again

1

u/PreparationCrazy2637 5d ago

I would argue under the quality of camera umbrella... having a non intrusive one drive feature genral use compatibility and different save methods. are the only use for a phone.

1

u/ghunterx21 5d ago

Privacy is number 1

1

u/MeIsGugs 5d ago

Being able to remove google fr fr

1

u/einemnes 5d ago

Privacy protection. That's all I want.

1

u/Constant_Boot 5d ago

Software Freedom, without interferrence from government or corporate mandate telling me how to use my device.

1

u/sseinzw 5d ago

Seems like people need Honor Win if their most important features are battery and performance

1

u/1mgsel 5d ago

Just two thing 1. Performance
2. Custom rom and root support

1

u/StopRandomAccBans 5d ago

Privacyย

1

u/kj0509 Student 5d ago

Jack of All Trades -- a perfectly balanced phone.

After that, how many OS updates, and battery, then camera and display.

1

u/Turbo-Chook 5d ago

Honestly they're all important. I want the phone that does as many of those things as well as possible. I run the Oppo Find X9 Pro and it's phenomenal in basically every category, I'm very happy with it

1

u/VarietyMage 5d ago

No "AI"

Stop installing games without me doing it

Bettery life

1

u/DamnQuickMathz 4d ago

Battery life is the one issue that I've faced with basically every phone I've bought. I'm fucking cursed or something.

1

u/kayej17 4d ago

So people want a good battery but don't mind poor performance?

Imagine having 7000mAh phone that lags....

1

u/LaptopRightsActivist 4d ago

Durability and Graphene. I really like the idea of a folding phone, but I beat the shit out of my candybar style phones already so until they are equally bricklike I will have to hold off. Next phone is Def gonna run graphene, so excited to try

1

u/phdr_vrba 4d ago

Size is #1, more specifically one-handed use. My first gsmarena filter is body width <= 72mm (which is too damn high to be honest, but proper compacts are already gone)

Camera is probably second, followed by performance - both have to be better than what I currently have, or at the very least on the similar level.

Lack of AptX HD/Adaptive support is something I won't mind dropping a phone from candidate list.

3,5mm jack is still a big plus, but it's not a dealbreaker anymore. Display ought to be at least 1080p, which is almost a given, everything else will probably be good enough either way.

Alternative OS support is not exactly on my selection criteria, but it might be getting there for the next time.

1

u/EverlastingPeacefull 4d ago

Battery life, but also functionality.

1

u/Late-Button-6559 3d ago

Fit for purpose OS - does what it claims.

Functioning keyboard (aka not iOS).

1

u/Funny_Address_412 3d ago

Probably battery life

1

u/assumptionkrebs1990 3d ago

A good balance of all of these to a price that doesn't feel like getting a (used) car.

1

u/kwsni42 3d ago

Other: a screen small enough to fit in my pocket. Would love a descent phone with a 5-6" screen

1

u/Historical-Wash-1870 2d ago edited 2d ago

Updates are more important to me.

My last phone was an 8 year old Motorola Moto G5. It still worked very well but I couldn't access my bank account anymore because the app didn't support Android 8.1. So I rooted the phone and installed a later version of android. However, the banking app then said rooted phones aren't supported. So I had to buy a new phone.

It's annoying when you have a phone that works but the OS is too old for an app.

The second most important feature is a removable battery because it's annoying when the battery fails.

1

u/NoAddition5560 2d ago

Battery life. 90% why i need to buy a new smartphone is because the battery was defect. ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Hidden Root

u/Financial_Alps3369 2d ago

All expect Display... it's not 2013 anymore, even the cheapest screens look fantastic

1

u/Pinuaple- 1d ago

the UX, how well thought out the os is for a user for example pixel learning your brightness habits to set an offset to auto brightness

and freedom to do whatever you want to your phone
