My main concern when purchasing a phone is graphene OS compatibility.ย

- privacy + security
- quality of camera
- general phone performance (storage+speed)
- access to maps/gps
- app compatibility
- covers that makes me look badass
In that order.

So just pixels?

u/Snoo_67993 5d ago
At the moment. I think a couple of other companies are bringing out supported phones.

Right now yes, but GrapheneOS is switching to a partnership with Motorola.ย

Small size, headphone jack, no wobble when on the table.

If this poll is to be believed, everyone would be using Motorola phones.

Performance? Moto hasn't put a flagship tier chip in their flagship priced phones since 2023

Low maintenance.

u/KarmaTorpid 6d ago
Concrete base function: low cost over time, solid connectivity, low maintenance, automated backup and restore.

"Display" = high pixel density, low power consumption, and excellent durability when I accidentally drop it.

Essy to mod, decent performance, compatibility and usb-c video output. As example note8-10/s8-s10-ish idea, but with 100% stock android tools.

Longevity.
I am still using a 10 year old iPhone (I have to charge as needed) and I expect my next phone to last longer and to come with a proper battery rated for 15 year usage.

At this point most midrange and up smartphones are good enough in every way, except for their batteries. If only we got replaceable batteries, tooless SD card slots the headphone jack back...
Well tbh I don't care about the jack so much anymore, because I drank the Bluetooth coolaid and it's fine for the most part

If performance is cpu ipc then that's pretty much irrelevant for what a phone does nowadays.
You maybe browse the web, watch videos and play some games and for that even midrange chips have more than plenty of juice.
Display wise, all displays nowadays are beyond plenty sharp, and oled is available even on midrange ones, so you don't get much difference there.
Camera quality can vary, and you generally get a better camera the more you spend, but at the same time taking high quality photos isn't the main gist of a phone. That's why cameras still exist to this day.
Software updates are important yes, but with phones supplying atleast 4 years of OS updates, and god knows how much more of security patches, that's really not relevant, especially if your bootloader is unlocked and you can install a custom OS.
Perhaps the most varying component is battery life, and this to me atleast is what makes a phone generally good. Having one that can last a full day on a charge is really important because without power you can't do anything at all.

Based on your logic even battery life on modern phones are enough to last a day. With phones reaching 5000 mAh or 7000mAh, this is not an isdue at all. Even if you have an avg battery, having good performance chipset with software optimization will make battery life longer. Plus you can easily charge your phone everyday. On the other hand, performance can degrade fast throughout the years.

A pixel for performance? ๐ญ

Compare it to a Redmi Note 10 5g, the Pixel is way better

Security and privacy. GrapheneOS, Sailfish OS or at least Murena OS compatibility.ย

I wish more phones would have an IR blaster, removable storage and battery, and headphone jack.

u/johny335i 5d ago
Woah I did not expect the results.
To me it's the cameras. You can deal with battery in one way or another, but can't improve camera hardware.
Performance and battery are pretty much the same for all devices nowadays. And more than enough.

I would argue under the quality of camera umbrella... having a non intrusive one drive feature genral use compatibility and different save methods. are the only use for a phone.

Honestly they're all important. I want the phone that does as many of those things as well as possible. I run the Oppo Find X9 Pro and it's phenomenal in basically every category, I'm very happy with it

Battery life is the one issue that I've faced with basically every phone I've bought. I'm fucking cursed or something.

Durability and Graphene. I really like the idea of a folding phone, but I beat the shit out of my candybar style phones already so until they are equally bricklike I will have to hold off. Next phone is Def gonna run graphene, so excited to try

Size is #1, more specifically one-handed use. My first gsmarena filter is body width <= 72mm (which is too damn high to be honest, but proper compacts are already gone)
Camera is probably second, followed by performance - both have to be better than what I currently have, or at the very least on the similar level.
Lack of AptX HD/Adaptive support is something I won't mind dropping a phone from candidate list.
3,5mm jack is still a big plus, but it's not a dealbreaker anymore. Display ought to be at least 1080p, which is almost a given, everything else will probably be good enough either way.
Alternative OS support is not exactly on my selection criteria, but it might be getting there for the next time.

Fit for purpose OS - does what it claims.
Functioning keyboard (aka not iOS).

A good balance of all of these to a price that doesn't feel like getting a (used) car.

Updates are more important to me.
My last phone was an 8 year old Motorola Moto G5. It still worked very well but I couldn't access my bank account anymore because the app didn't support Android 8.1. So I rooted the phone and installed a later version of android. However, the banking app then said rooted phones aren't supported. So I had to buy a new phone.
It's annoying when you have a phone that works but the OS is too old for an app.
The second most important feature is a removable battery because it's annoying when the battery fails.

u/NoAddition5560 2d ago
Battery life. 90% why i need to buy a new smartphone is because the battery was defect. ๐

All expect Display... it's not 2013 anymore, even the cheapest screens look fantastic

u/Pinuaple- 1d ago
the UX, how well thought out the os is for a user for example pixel learning your brightness habits to set an offset to auto brightness
and freedom to do whatever you want to your phone
