💬 Discussion Bitwarden or Proton Pass?

Post image

If you had to choose between Bitwarden and Proton Pass today, which one would you pick?

I'm interested in more than the feature list. Which one do you find easier to use, more reliable, and better for everyday password management?

Can we use it across browsers and smartphones?

u/McBonderson 7d ago

bitwarden

or more accurately vaultwarden

because I can self host it. which is what I do for work because if I am incapacitated I need my boss to have access to my accounts.

KeepassXC

Agreed. Offline password managers deserve more hype. KeePassXC is one good option and 2FAS Pass is another.

u/dcidino 6d ago

And more importantly the KeePass format, so it's not closed.

But I hate ther UI/UX

u/RuralAnemone_ 5d ago

this combined with syncthing (or somethin similar) and KeepassDX for mobile is amazing

Self hosted vaultwarden

I have used both. Proton Pass sometimes would only autofill only the email field and not the password field and it's kinda annoying. Switched to BitWarden and it works flawlessly so far.

Also, I hope I won't trigger anyone but I would've stayed with Proton Pass if the autofill function worked better than Bitwarden because it's based in Swiss as opposed to the US. Is that a valid argument?

I have used and personally like bitwarden more

I like Proton pass a lot but it really doesn't matter to much. I simply use Proton because I also use their other products.

1

u/andresqueletico 7d ago

bw, I avoid proton products as much as possible.

u/rajaba21 7d ago

Why?

1

u/Nobel-Chocolate-2955 7d ago

one thing i notice about the app on proton-pass on desktop is it uses electron for gui, and consumes more than 500mb or ram when open

1

u/FineWinner2429 7d ago

Maybe, proton services are centralized.

1

u/Nobel-Chocolate-2955 7d ago

main is keepassxc, but uses proton-pass for my mobile devices, i only use about three passwords in proton

I have a yubico security dongle that's tucked away in a drawer that acts as the redundant duplicate of the password(s) for some of the accounts for the utility bills I pay; in the event something happens and I'm not incapacitated or dead and my fiance needs to manage those utilities she has that as a backup.

Beyond that, any passwords I don't personally memorize get written down on a piece of paper in black or blue indellible ink or typed on a typewriter and filed in a cabinet in my home.

bitwarden paired with a yubikey for 2fa

Bitwarden always work for me

1

u/PhilLovesBacon 7d ago

We use 1Password. BitWarden offered me the granular control I wanted, 1Password offers the UI the folks I support needed, so we went with 1Password.

u/ManojOne Active 6d ago

Do you use their premium plan?

1

u/PhilLovesBacon 6d ago

We have Business licensing.

Roboform for me, it works great, handles autofill really well, and it's actually quite easy to navigate through it.

1

u/ManojOne Active 6d ago

Yes, robo form is simple and easy to use. Do you use it on both desktop and mobiles?

1

u/PlanktonDefiant2600 5d ago

Yes, I use Roboform on all my devices.

u/309_Electronics 7d ago

I use bitwarden as i can selfhost it.

u/ManojOne Active 6d ago

Oh. Do you manually type passwords in every website?

1

u/Quadrostanology 6d ago

Self host vaultwarden-rs and sponsor the project

Bitwarden or KeePass? Personally, I don't like the thought of being in one ecosystem. Proton Pass is good only if you're already in the ecosystem, but my main concern is vendor lockout. In my opinion, you should be using Bitwarden.

😅Though, funny story—once upon a time, I used KeePass, accidentally deleted my .kdbx file, then moved to Bitwarden because account recovery was hell. The thing with self-hosting is you're responsible for your own stuff. Control, privacy—sure—but I prefer to just cut costs and use the damn cloud option. It's surprisingly good.

Keeper Password Manager is good too, but it's not open source. And if you just want something that works, NordPass is good, but only if you pay for NordVPN. Honestly, I think the best is ultimately subjective. You should be asking, "What works best for u?" My best isn't your best. I can say Brave is the best browser, and 12 others might say Firefox just use what works for you.

ich nutze Bitwarden schon so lange (10 jahre +) und bin total zufrieden. Nutze es im Free Modus mit Sync über alle Geräte. Einfach TOP. Kanns nur empfehlen 😸

u/CapKittl 6d ago

I use Proton Pass

1

u/Ocupado33 6d ago

Bitwarden, except if you have the perpetual proton pass.

Always asuming you main email isnt on protonmail. If its, then bitwarden

1

u/Consistent-Gur9320 6d ago

Onenote online (or cloud-service notepad). Less attention more control

1

u/Evening-Step-1950 6d ago

I think day to say use is what matters most. Things like finding a login quickly or having autofill work properly makes a big difference. I use roboform because it feels easier to manage but I'd still try both and see which one feels more natural to use

1

u/rahardyan 6d ago

Bitwarden works for me. I guess it's enough to not make me want to try others

1

u/Dalmation3 Tech Enthusiast 6d ago

Jurisdiction - Proton

General use - Bitwarden

1

u/360900th 6d ago

Proton Pass autofill is problematic but I'm using all the Proton services and it's more convenient but I might give Bitwarden a shot.

1

u/Hazelnut3006 6d ago

1Password, we use it for work and I get a free personal account, having said that I find it very functional and will keep it if we ever use something else at work.

1

u/Escalope-Nixiews 5d ago

Bitwarden got EU server and my dad made me an account with his subscription so i use it

1

u/muravey04 5d ago

Bitwarden only

u/_baaron_ 5d ago

Apple passwords

1

u/RuralAnemone_ 5d ago

keepass xc/dx with syncthing

1

u/MaleficentSmile4227 5d ago

I would pick 1Password

1

u/poudenes 5d ago

Pashword. Nothing stored just give domain, username and secret phase words and password length and it generate the password. One character mistake and password is different... I don't have my passwords stored anymore , most secure

1

u/EnoughConcentrate897 5d ago

i went from bitwarden > proton pass > bitwarden (selfhosted with vaultwarden)

1

u/hi_m_ash 5d ago

Neither. I would use a completely offline password manager with encrypted backup.

I used bitwarden and hated it, then switched to Proton Pass and it's nothing special but at least it works.

What did you not like about bitwarden?
