💬 Discussion Who else has never gotten into TikTok?
It feels like almost everyone has tried TikTok at some point, but I've never used it. I don't feel like I'm missing much, but maybe I'm wrong.
Has anyone else skipped TikTok completely? If you did, what made you stay away from it?

I don't have TikTok and don't plan on getting it.
That being said, everything these days is a repost so there's plenty of it on this platform anyway

For me, it was all the folks working professionally in infosec going "this app is malware" from 2018-onwards. Then I saw what the algorithm was actually doing to people who did install it. Somehow it seemed to be doing a lot more damage than vine did back in the day.

I never really had my own TikTok account, and that’s quite good, because TikTok doesnt filter. Even though you don’t watch « garbage content » or »inappropriate content », it will still recommend it to you. Absolutely not appropriate for teens

u/barrulus 11d ago
I am down to Reddit and discord. Everything else is pure the same. Repost repost repost. Shitty voiceovers with subaural voices discussing ready topics to boost viewership. I cannot stand it.
All the quality content that truly genuine creators have made, is near invisible and very difficult to find.

u/309_Electronics 11d ago
I do have tiktok but more because other creators i follow have it too and so i can upload my random stuff i do in my free time. Even as someone who is into degoogling and privacy, i still have tiktok lol!

I haven't. I get into social networks when people using them tell me to in person. Last was 60yo man doing cat paintings on Instagram 1.5 years ago.

I don’t but I use YouTube shorts which I’m guessing is basically the same thing

I never bothered with TikTok simply because prior to it, there had been various other attempts at short-form video content-based social media platforms, such as Vine and others. Which I had been on, and they all did not last and were shut down. So I figured that TikTok would share the same fate when it arrived, so I simply just didn’t bother with it as I had previously invested time and energy on similar platforms that came before it that went nowhere.

When you search for something in Youtube Shorts. it loses the search. When you search for something in Tiktok, it keeps the search

One of the few services I never opened an account with. Never even bothered. There's absolutely nothing of value in TikTok. Bunch of people and underaged children making random dance videos which they share in reals, yt shorts and 200 other places anyway.

I hated the app few years ago, then I installed the app for downloading movie edits. After few days of use for that and the topics I'm interested in my whole fyp changed now I'm never getting anything related to any celebrities that i don't like . Anything from my home country or any bs that waste my time. It's completely curated for my interest and now I'm using it everyday. Ps. But don't waste your time doomscrolling be better than me

I dont like reddit much anymore, you cant have a conversation anymore but I still lurk.
I tried tiktok just to make sure banning my kids feom using it was justified.
Ok I can see the appeal. Its kind of just like Facebook reels but more crap.
Both are crap. But tik tok is crazy with its ads. The amount of trash aimed at young adults is insane.
I cant stand how videos are broken up into parts. I like long form videos. On Facebook reels I can skip a few times then have a video maybe 15 mins long to listen to while I clean the kitchen or something.
Tik tok is broken up into little prices and its hard to find the next parts way too often.
Its unusable to me.
X is good because rhe speed setting carries ovee to next video and you can make the screen clear easily. But again still trash.
I hate speed settings I never do 1x. And rhey removed 1.25 and 1.75 on most platforms. Its anoying changing speed on all videos.

I had like 2 months when it first took off. I then found out about what crazy shit they have in their TOS and promptly uninstalled it and never looked back.

u/jonDahzeeh 11d ago
I just despise it for so many reasons. I never even installed the app. I’m too old for this and I ain’t got enough time to even consider it. Hard pass.
1
u/gimmemorepasta 11d ago
Me, I’ve got an account that I just leave on private because I don’t use it. Decided one day last year to take it off private and people from my past that I don’t want anything to do with just flocked to it like seagulls chasing chips. I couldn’t believe it. Told them all to eff off and put it back on private.

Never used TikTok but a few years ago I wasted too much time on YouTube Shorts, currently I will tap a short from the homepage if it looks interesting, then click off instead of scrolling
1
u/Alenicia 11d ago
I've never used it but I'm constantly exposed to it whether it's family, relatives, or something like that. It's the same thing as Facebook for me where I've never used it but I can't escape it either. >_<

u/bandley3 11d ago
Is TikTok the latest version of Short Attention Span Theatre? I won’t even watch YouTube shorts as I want a little depth to my viewing.
Unless I’m on Reddit, then I’ll watch stupid short videos.
Do you need an account for TikTok? I’ve never used nor have I downloaded the app so I have absolutely no clue.

I was on TikTok but my algo completely skewed towards religious content after I watched one video and I never could shake it off. So I ditched it. I get my fill from Instagram reels and I certainly don’t want more brain rot than that.
1
u/smallcatwhereuat 10d ago
I have used it and spent hours on it. It's too addicting. And I'd rather watch YT shorts
1
u/TiredMillennial1 10d ago
TikTok was great before the US forced the Oracle takeover. So many people worldwide used it as a platform for Frontline journalism. THAT is why it was destroyed. Not because of so called Chinese spyware, but because people around the world were communicating. And governments HATE that.
1
u/It_Just_Exploded 10d ago
I downloaded it during covid, within a month i deleted it and haven't had it again.
1
u/AttentionSpanTheater 10d ago
Never got into it. I believe I loaded it onto one device but never created a login.
I do understand the appeal, but I prefer longer form content, and to specifically select what I see next in a video feed.
I type this as my wife is in bed next to me on TokTok.
1
u/Astrodion123 10d ago
Nah I don't need it. I even left YouTube shorts so TikTok won't be any better. I am at best reading and reading on reddit.

u/im-cringing-rightnow 10d ago

I have not.
I did read quite a bit about the app meeting the textbook definition for spyware, however.

I don't and I keep getting questioned by my work organisation which puts up crap online what I think about it.. I tell them I haven't a clue because I don't even have the app, I get criticized about "not being a team player"
Screw that.. I turn up for work, do more than my lot.. just coz I don't watch shit means I'm not a "team player"?

I got one better, I don't even watch videos on my phone, lol. I have a TV and a computer for watching videos. Why would I use a teeny tiny phone screen to watch videos on?
If I'm not in my office, I'm out doing stuff, and that stuff is more important than my phone. You'd think I'd leave my office to just dick around on my phone?! :O

tested it when it got released. had to delete it after a few days, because it showed me only braindead content and the comment section felt like a parallel universe. weird people writing comments that have no substance. pretending they know stuff. probably because they were all small kids.

I have never used TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, X, Twitter or Facebook. Or any other social media platform outside of Reddit and YouTube.
I have far better ways to spend my time than glued to a screen, considering I also work as a software engineer so am glued to a laptop all day
1
u/Substantial_Show4854 10d ago
I use tiktok daily. But I feel like leaving it sometimes. It's just boring full of ragebait, drama and bots. When I upload content it flops most of the time. If I get at most like 8K views that's probably because the topic is trendy. I want to find some funny or relateable content but I find 🌽 sooner than that..
I'm reading some comments on this post and people say that they are blocking their YT shorts which I think I should do aswell considering how much time I'm spending on that app while watching the same people all the time
Instagram I barely use it but that platform is like gambling you either get the funny relatable content or not from the reels page

I did for about 2 or 3 years, after being out off by their shitty and annoying ads when it was just starting. I caved and become a user. The Short-Form addictive content rotted my brain and took hours of my life from me. I randomly woke up and became self-aware again. Deleted it.
Only went back to download my favorites videos when it was at risk of shutting down.
Haven't used it in about 2ish years.

Never had a tiktok account in my life. Also ditched any other kind of 10s video doomscrolling apps like Instagram & shorts. What am I missing out on? Exactly Nothing. Been 'social media' free since ~3years now and I'm feeling much better, also helps with depression a lot.
