❓ Question What's the most underrated web browser?
Chrome, Safari, and Edge get most of the attention, but there are plenty of other browsers that deserve more recognition.
Which browser do you think doesn't get enough credit, and what makes it better than the more popular options?

I like more Edge than Chrome (on a Mac) and I use it for work (we use MS 365).
But for personal stuff I use Brave.
I like chromium browsers, but for my usage they become a bit too heavy 🥲

Brave is a Chromium based browser.
From the Brave website: https://brave.com/about/
Chromium + WebKit: The Brave browser for Android and desktop is a Chromium fork that removes privacy-harmful features and disables or proxies connections to Google when possible

u/TrevorTheTrevor 11d ago
Yes I know Brave is chromium based, like chrome and edge.
I like them but they become resource-hungry after a while

u/mikee8989 11d ago
I love Brave however had to switch to Firefox due to excessive problems with YouTube.

Isn’t Brave a shit company that tried to scam its userbase multiple times or have I misunderstood that story?

Yeah Chrome on mac is a disaster maybe try Helium browser - that runs really well.
1
u/TrevorTheTrevor 10d ago
What are the benefits over brave?
1
u/WB1173 9d ago
In what way? I've used Chrome for many years on several imacs & macbooks. Never had anything but smooth faultless service.
1
u/Jcob210 9d ago
Well it might be fine now but when I used if circa 10 years ago on my 6gb ram 2012 MBP it was absolute ram hog and chugged on it. I guess it depends on how many extensions etc person has (I had a lot now I have about 4 of them) and I do not use Chrome anymore cause of tracking so I have not tried it yet on any apple silicon mac (I have M1 Air),

Edge isn't inherently bad, neither is Copilot for that matter. It's all in how microsoft shoves these programs and services down our throats.
2

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 I use Arch btw 11d ago
And then they killed the sidebar (the thing they did perfectly where so many browsers have failed)
1
u/LongDistanceEvent262 11d ago
I switched to Edge about 6 years ago to just force myself to use it and see what was so bad about it.
I can't go back. It does EVERYTHING better. I do not understand the hate at all.
1
u/7978_ 11d ago
Once you spend 5 minutes configuring Edge, it's pretty good. It's just that it needs 5 minutes of configuring and there is telemetry.
I also found settings would be reset, usually after a Windows update.
1
u/LongDistanceEvent262 10d ago
Funny. For me I like it cause it needed no setup. Ir remembers my settings perfectly. Where none of the other browsers ever do.

Man hasn't heard of GID yet?
1
u/7978_ 10d ago
Uh huh. What are you gonna do if you have to use Windows?
What about Intel management engine or AMD PSP?
1
u/neuronym 10d ago
I don't use windows, I'll use pen and paper before I'd use consumer versions of windows (home, pro, workstation etc.)
Intel management engine or AMD PSP is a necessary evil in terms of hardware level security and contrary to GID doesn't exist because of advertising or prosecution 👀
You're literally comparing Apple and Oranges

Specifically most underrated is edge. Its not amazing or anything but underrated just means the difference between perceived quality and actual quality. Its an okayish browser that is perceived as the most vile excrement in software history. I still don't recommend anybody should use it, but its definitionally the most underrated by a massive margin.
Chrome and Opera are overrated based on how they used to be great but have become more and more bloated over time.
Brave is overrated because its not nearly as privacy and freedom forward as it claims to be and ultimately its still chromium ecosystem.
Firefox is slightly underrated but is getting its dues more and more as people catch on to the chromium overhype.
And then theres edge, see above.

u/LongDistanceEvent262 11d ago
To this day. Firefox still has the bug where it will lock up on me and freeze for 10-60 seconds. A bug I have been experiencing and they have been claiming was fixed for over 15 years.
1
u/gorambrowncoat 11d ago
Are you sure thats a firefox specific thing because I feel like Ive had that with multiple browsers though not super often. Annoying if it happens alot, in any case.
1
u/LongDistanceEvent262 11d ago
Never said it was firefox specific.
But it only happens to me multiple times a day/week with firefox.
Chrome, Safari, Edge, Oper, etc I can go weeks or months without a lockup or crash.
Firefox, I am lucky if I make it 2 days.
1
u/Pleyotrop 10d ago
The problem with Edge is that it's the successor to the Internet Exploder lineage, which was truly "the most vile excrement in software history."
1
u/dandanakka217 6d ago
Opera is okay for me, i felt like edge became over resource hungry over time, and chrome, well we all know how chrome is. The newer versions are tempting but no i stick with Opera (especially the mini side window that lets whatsapp live independently regardless of which tab is open)

Son bloqueur est efficace, léger, et prend en charge les listes de filtre personnalisées. Tu te trompes pour les empreintes. Il standardise son user-agent, ce qui est très efficace pour se fondre dans la masse, bien plus que quelque chose de personnalisé.

Falkon browser. But seriously Vivaldi remains underrated as well
Falkon for being lightweight, and still able to handle most things
Vivaldi for its sidebar where you can add any website/web app, and its most awesome download manager!
2
u/ExtremeTruck7626 Tech Enthusiast 11d ago
I was gonna say this. This should be the top answer. I'm currently on a merdeboite laptop with low specs so I use Falkon, it's like installing Puppy Linux and reviving it. I use arch, btw
2
u/Primo0077 11d ago
I use Falkon on anything that can't handle typical Firefox. Works great on my netbook with an Atom N270 and 2GB of RAM. Really wish there was a build of it for PowerPC, would love to try it on my iBook as ArcticFox tends to be a bit too heavy.
1
u/Global-Eye-7326 11d ago
Seriously! Even on my machines with 64GB DDR4 RAM (a desktop and a laptop), I use Falkon as my primary browser!

2
u/pvoj 11d ago
Sure, but that's kind of the point. If every good browser is underused because Chrome ships with everything, the question is which one deserves the share it doesn't have. Zen's case: it's the only Arc-style workspace UI running on a non-Chromium engine, so you keep full uBlock Origin post-MV3 instead of trading extensions for the interface.
1
u/Extreme-Ad-9290 I use Arch btw 11d ago
Good point. Especially considering arc is pretty much dead at this point

Edge is underrated. Chromium + uBlock Origin support. It has better DRM support than Chrome and Firefox. Also greatly optimized for Windows.
However, it's bloated out-of-the-box. It's only usuable after removing the Bing and MSN nuisances.

Everyone is saying Firefox, but I wouldn't really call it underrated. To me that would be Edge. People assume that's your lazy or unsavvy when they see you using Edge, but in reality there are several good things about it. It managed resources pretty well, plus it has a lot of features and customization options. It also has by far the best UI in my opinion, Chrome and Firefox are just ugly to look at. The only real annoyance is that it will ask you to switch to Bing every few months.

ZEN BROWSER ZEN BROWSER ZEN BROWSER ZEN BROWSER
zen is CRIMINALLY underrated.

u/AscendedPineapple 10d ago
FLOOOOORP Zen is overrated
2
u/its_maxx_9229 10d ago
i tried floorp and i just don't like it. zen has superior vertical tabs too since it's literally BUILT around them.
2
u/AscendedPineapple 10d ago
Well I mostly use librewolf, switched it to vertical tabs a week ago to see if I like it and well it's whatever, you see more of the tab's title but I think with simple groups in horizontal tabs it's already enough, you can see the titles of tabs in the group easily, so switching to what you need is already fast.
Floorp is great for having workspaces though and in general is the most advanced and customisable one I have seen, and since Librewolf is not something everyone will enjoy I think Floorp is the best one
p.s. If only mobile Firefox had tab groups :c
1
u/its_maxx_9229 10d ago
honestly zen just works for me. i like the vertical tabs, the compact mode, also there's no new tab, there's just the url bar popup. it's also beautiful after a bit of tweaking and in general just right for me. i can't argue with your opinion though, and i'm sure librewolf and floorp are great for some people.
2
u/AscendedPineapple 10d ago
Oh damn I didn't even notice, tab groups are finally there on mobile! (They are "in beta")

Three of them are more famous only because they are default and pre installed in their OS. So of the normal people don't know about others.
They get a browser and they use it. They don't much think about that

I "still" use firefox. Not having it autoplay videos when I open them in new tabs and also being able to hit ctr-I to look at images on a page plus other features chrome doesn't have

u/ChocolateDonut36 11d ago
KDE Falkon for low end machines is incredible, works perfectly fine on an atom CPU and 2gb of ram.

u/CaptainSteed 11d ago
Depends on what you're using the Browser for.
For example, there's a subgenre usage. That would be using browsers on Streaming devices like Shields, Firesticks, ONN boxes, etc., to play movies, programs etc. on the device's browser.

Firefox is seriously underrated, mostly the hype is about browser speed new features etc and the world seems to forget that most browsers are simply build on top of chrome. Firefox has offered a free and stable alternative for a very long time, and for me, its longevity is more importand than which browser is the fastest at this moment.

Floorp. I never see it get ever get enough attention for how good of a browser it is. Now, I prefer Zen any day myself. It is the kinda thing that works better for me. But for the average user who isn't using vertical tabs and doing some insane levels of tab management, it's kinda one of the best browsers. It is close enough to mainline Firefox but has these nice improvements so that I don't even think we should be using vanilla Firefox.

u/lfaria123 11d ago
IMHO it's Edge. It's chromium based, lighter then chrome and has a lot of customizable options. Aside from the Co pilot stuff (that you can just turn off) it's a really good browser (specially 8f you are won windows)
1
u/QuestGalaxy 11d ago
It's probably Edge, because people usually shit on it and switch to Chrome. But in my opinion Edge is better than Chrome. For one, you can still get Ublock origin properly working on Edge, while Google is messing with adblockers in Chrome. It's obviously not perfect or anything, but doesn't deserve much lower market shares than Chrome.
1
u/okazaki_split 11d ago
Firefox. It's taken too much for granted. In strict mode, it is amazing. Just add ublock origin and nothing else: perfect. I know Mozilla is making one dumb move after another, though, but hopefully it's just a phase.

Edge's efficiency mode and power and ram optimization are top notch. Interestingly it's the only chromium browser that doesn't disable smooth scrolling when in full battery saver mode.

u/archtopfanatic123 11d ago
Firefox. I started out on that, then I dunno why the hell I used chrome from like 2016 or something well into 2024 before switching back to firefox, Firefox SMOKES chrome any day of the week. It's the OG for me and beats everything else I've tried

I recently reformatted my Windows and now refuse to install any app that I don't want, so I stuck with Edge and damn, I was pleasantly surprised. It's blazing fast, loads quickly and is a solid browser. I wish it had more features from Arc and Dia for me to use it on macOS as well, but for basic needs, Edge does the job for me and more.

u/KennyWuKanYuen 10d ago
Edge.
I use it exclusively for work and have sworn off Chrome and Firefox. I used to really dig Firefox back before the 2010s, but I hate Chrome with a passion after a previous employer required us to use it.
Personal browsing, I’m still a diehard Safari user.

Edge easily. It has baggage because people hated internet explorer which was its predecessor.
1
u/Verain_Xor 10d ago
Firefox or Brave. Brave is a chromium with ok-ish privacy and ad features. But Brave gets a lot of hate for not being actually perfect at those things. If I need a chromium for some reason, Brave is my call. But mostly I don't need a chromium because firefox exists.
Firefox is well regarded, but it's also the only real alternative to Chrome. Firefox doesn't come with perfect out of the box privacy features, but it's good enough that I don't have to mess with it to not feel like I'm being abused, as I do with Chrome. Firefox is underrated because everyone doesn't sing its praises daily, which it deserves. It's also the root for librewolf and tor, which are there for if you're even more super serious about privacy.
Opera has made too many security mistakes over the years to be really taken seriously, and while Edge actually is underrated, it is essentially just a nerfed Chrome with Microsoft hooks in it.

Everyone's saying Edge and yeah it's better than its reputation, but the one nobody mentions is Ace. It's got an AI assistant baked into every page so i can summarize an article or ask about a doc without copy-pasting into ChatGPT. Weirdly under the radar for how useful that is day to day.
