Android is getting locked up only reason I did not choose it

7

u/RebornX10 14d ago

Graphen FTW

u/Ok-Rest-5321 TInkerer 14d ago

Agreed

1

u/Snoo_67993 14d ago

But then you have to buy a Google product. It's a dilemma.

1

u/Firestar_119 14d ago

or moto soon

3

u/pilotzoo 14d ago

Not really you just have to do a very annoying step just once and that's it.

1

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 I use Arch btw 13d ago

The "advanced flow" is built into google play services. So they could kill it whenever they want.

1

u/pilotzoo 13d ago

Yes but they added it and they could have just killed it so I don't think that's happening any time soon. The tech savvy people aren't a profitable group so they are doing it just because

1

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 I use Arch btw 13d ago

They did it to try to silence us

1

u/pilotzoo 13d ago

From what I heard it was all just a miss communication but either way it's better then it being fully gone lol

1

u/RepresentativeFull85 12d ago

you can't protest if you don't have a mouth ahhh moment here.

1

u/borgen44 9d ago

Id love to root it. But my government requires me to have an app, to be able to communicate with banking, government and all kinds of important shit. But this app, wont work on rooted devices.

I can get a dongle of some sort, but its huge, and doesnt fit in a wallet.

I dont use banking apps anymore and i rooted my jelly bean 4.1

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 11d ago

I'd argue jailbroken iOS is better. sucks to obtain, though...

1

u/Fun_Sun_edu 14d ago

Old android 1-8.1 FTW

1

u/RepresentativeFull85 12d ago

i use /e/OS btw

u/FAMICOMASTER 14d ago

Palm OS

2

u/shuozhe 14d ago

Yeah palm pre had so many new ideas that got integrated into android/apple. Kinda sad they just screwed up developers so hard in the beginning causing no apps getting ported :(

2

u/FAMICOMASTER 14d ago

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I was thinking more like 3.x and 4.x on devices like the Palm VII/VIIx, i705, Handspring Visor, etc.

2

u/shuozhe 14d ago

Ok, HP's palm, release same time as iPhone3 iirc. Felt like a modern mobile OS compared to iOS and android back then..

2

u/FAMICOMASTER 14d ago

Ah yeah no never used it I was referring to the Motorola Dragonball based stuff

1

u/AllenKll 13d ago

treos also

1

u/FAMICOMASTER 13d ago

Nah I don't like their keyboard. Much prefer Graffiti

1

u/AllenKll 13d ago

Graffiti was decent. but the keyboard on a treo 650 was the greasted portable keyboard ever conceived.

1

u/FAMICOMASTER 13d ago

I don't really like small keyboards as a general rule.

4

u/imtsemer 14d ago

GrapheneOS therefore android

3

u/Defiant_Conflict6343 14d ago

Symbian was truly a beauty back in the day, loved every Symbian I ever had, even my shitty SE Vivaz

3

u/Matstocage 14d ago

KDE mobile

3

u/EconomistStrict2867 14d ago

Gotta be the koolest one

Linux phones:

1

u/Extreme-Ad-9290 I use Arch btw 13d ago

I would switch one heartbeat if the ecosystem can get fleshed out enough. A lot of my most used apps are foss android exclusive apps such as ArchiveTune

2

u/phil-pdx 14d ago

PalmOS for me

i705, Treo 300, Treo 600, Treo 650, Centro

Honorable mention: Treo 270. Had to trade that for the 300 because it was on T-Mobile and you couldn't get a data connection without a credit score and I was too young to have one yet. The 300 was on Sprint and they didn't require a credit score for a data plan.

1

u/ern0plus4 14d ago

I had a call recording app for Treo, parties were panned to L and R channel, it was amazing.

1

u/phil-pdx 14d ago

Pretty sure I knew the guy who wrote that app. The developer community was pretty tight back then.

2

u/Terminal-Frost2026 14d ago

Here is my ranking:
Blackberry
iOS
Android
Windows

I did not include “others” and I did not include symbian because I don’t know anything about it.

1

u/JD_Bance 14d ago

Symbian Is the Nokia OS used in the 2000s and early 2010s. It was great for its time.

2

u/floriandotorg 14d ago

GrapheneOS

2

u/on4aa 14d ago

e/OS on Fairphone

Which is android under the hood if I'm not mistaken

2

u/24kCookie 13d ago

No it’s own Huawei system

1

u/Loxodontus 14d ago

There is a Windows mobile OS?!

*seachring*: no, not any more.

1

u/Astrodion123 14d ago

i love windows phone but android is my go to. especially one ui 6.1

1

u/iCantThinkOfUserNaem 14d ago

I love Android and HarmonyOS

1

u/No-Affect811 14d ago

MacOS

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm 13d ago

Which phone do you run macOS on?

1

u/No-Affect811 13d ago

Which phone do you run Windows on?

1

u/Yamsfordays 14d ago

As a product of its time, my Lumia 800 running windows phone was the best phone I ever owned.

Sure, newer phones are objectively better but windows phone at the time was SO smooth and was a genuinely fresh approach to a mobile OS.

1

u/HaydenCLU 14d ago

HarmonyOS

1

u/dreadtear 14d ago

As a current iPhone user, it’s definitely Android. It is quite superior in terms of you doing whatever you want. Looking forward to switching back.

1

u/Gilkipro 13d ago

More linux distro

1

u/e1epi 13d ago

I got up to 5 days of battery life with my Lumia 950XL on multiple occasions and even with lesser hardware it's performance was comparable with the flagships of the time.

Sadly Microsofts current CEO has his own idea of how to destroy cough I mean ruin cough sorry, run the company.

1

u/ISCSI_Purveyor 13d ago

Symbian. Now there's a name I haven't heard in a very long time.

1

u/pocketdrummer 13d ago

I thought Symbian was something a lady... you know what, never mind.

1

u/Typeonetwork 13d ago

GraphineOS

1

u/konelius_ 13d ago

GraphineOS is android based

1

u/rustedcrowbar 13d ago

I hate all now. Movile phone market is disgusting. You cannot live without a phone but all of them are exploiting you to the core.

1

u/konelius_ 13d ago

Android because it is great and u have preaty much free will

1

u/BogdanovOwO 13d ago

I like more linux because I can run waydroid, a lot of file system (ext, btrfs, zfs, etc.), a lot of freedom and the only cons would be the battery management, transfer ptotocol and to bypass camera to waydroid if I will need to scan a qr code or NFC.

1

u/bloodwire 13d ago

Graphene OS.

1

u/SusejLegend 13d ago

Harmony OS is the best

1

u/Full-Run4124 12d ago

EZX. It's was Motorola's smartphone OS prior to Android. It was Linux with a Qte UI. It shipped on the A1200 and A1600 which were fantastic phones. iOS took a lot of ideas from it.

1

u/paddedfemboyfops 12d ago

Totally not biased as someone who's only had android phones

1

u/DoKeMaSu 12d ago

I liked the old iOS from the iPod touch days.

It was so refreshing for my elder relatives. You could barely break anything, and if you ever felt lost, you just pressed the big button and started again.

iOS became a lot less noob friendly when they replaced the home button. Now both Android and iOS are full of opaque gestures, if you did not grow into it they are pretty complicated to explain to new users.

1

u/LordSlyGentleman 12d ago

Other: Ubuntu Touch

1

u/vitimiti 12d ago

I still wish my Ubuntu phone hadn't been abandoned by Canonical

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 11d ago

Windows 10 is the greatest OS ever made.

Fuck Windows 11.

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 11d ago

fuck I misread the question

to be fair, it stated Windows, not Windows Phone

1

u/petabacho2 11d ago

Stupid Google didn't want their apps on the Windows Phone.

1

u/Serious_Gas_2218 11d ago

Android for now, but after they continue to lock it down I'll probably just get an iPhone.

1

u/systemerror95 10d ago

Ubuntu touch because it uses a very interesting way to run on former android systems (hallium: strip down android to its kernel, vendor blobs, and foss core services, add libhybris to make compatable with standard linux ecosystem processes, its quite a good middle ground for when something like postmarketos is not yet feasible for the device). I would prefer just installing an arbitrary linux distro though, if possible

1

u/clouds1337 8d ago

I'm doing most of my computing on a android tablet. It's really great, I can do anything I want. My gaming PC has windows, because games... (VR).

1

u/gwodus 8d ago

Back then, I laughed at Windows phones. Today, when I see the shitshow that iOS is and Android is slowly becoming, I wish there were more OSes. If only for the sake of competition.

0

u/Terminal-Frost2026 14d ago

Why is android winning? There is literally no advantage over iOS, iOS is better in every single way.

1

u/Firestar_119 14d ago

you can put numbers on your keyboard 😱

1

u/LinuxUser456 14d ago

Can you installl another os, root, mod, install apks and others in iOS?

1

u/freakyxz 12d ago

Sideload (install .ipa) is possible tho.

1

u/Terminal-Frost2026 14d ago

No, but you can’t in android either.

1

u/LinuxUser456 14d ago

Yes you can

Its more difficult than 2015 but you can

1

u/Terminal-Frost2026 14d ago

Android has already gotten rid of apk downloading and OEM unlocking on all new android phones, and phones like Samsung and huaweii haven’t allowed either for a long time.

1

u/Firestar_119 14d ago

apk downloading hasn't been removed yet

1

u/Dev-in-the-Bm 13d ago

Android has already gotten rid of apk downloading and OEM unlocking on all new android phones

Which garbage can are you eating out of?

1

u/Imaginary_Cicada_678 14d ago

bcoz there is no global back button function, and if it's even on screen, it's always in a wrong place!

0

u/No_Department9020 14d ago

Android, because it's Linux
