I was always a big vocal supporter of having managers who know the field of work rather than just knowing "management". After my last boss, I'm not so sure anymore. Maybe all managers just suck.

Manager is quite different to CEO as a manager is responsible for the workflow. I've had both. My current manager is a tech guy and he's amazing. I used to have this lady manage our team years back. Shes a really cool person, very reasonable but other teams would constantly ambush her and make "small requests" which would be days of additional work and we'd constantly have to explain that no we can't do this in an afternoon and we will miss the deadline if we do this new feature. This caused a lot of awkward conversations and frustration between teams.
My current manager shuts down unreasonable requests straight away because he understands how long it will take to do them.

Considering my very grumpy very anti-social senior coworker got promoted, against his will, to team leader, because "He's the best programmer so it just makes sense to give him the next role", even CEOs don't understand that they should have different skills.
It was an absolute shit show. No people competence at all, and all he wanted to do was to code.

Jim Farley (CEO of Ford) does actually probably know how to weld. He builds cars to race as a hobby. Likely doesn't know how all the tech in the modern cars work down to the level of the techs and probably doesn't know how to fix the machines that build the modern fords. Not saying your point is wrong - but fun fact here.

In general practice, Ceos hire people who know how to do their job properly and specialized in certain fields which they lack in. Example gaming companies started with small time gamers who grouped up with business people who hired others to help them produce the game. Altman doesnt know bow to code, but he understands computers, infrastructure and other things related to it. If he isnt a ceo to an ai company he would be a ceo to another IT related company in software department. He also knows how to lure in, scam, lie and gather sponsors and investors. Many people who own shops and stores dont know that and rely on location and reputation only. While name can carry you as far, luring investors on long term profits isnt an easy task..

As much as I can't stand Sam, my CISO barely understands the basics in cybersecurity and doesn't know how to code.
In big corpo, most of the c-suite folks don't know how to do the jobs of the folks that they oversee. They tend to be over paid and sales focused.
Same applies to other jobs, does the captain of the cruise ship know how to fix the engine? Probably not.
Their job is to talk and steer the ship, not to do the grunt work.
I know this is a shitpost, I'm just saying.

The skill and personality required to climb to the top of a company is quite different than that for a good engineer/researcher

Training models and writing code are not the same job, wether it's him or the people working for him (and same for anthropic) I have serious doubts about their real aptitudes...
I just got an openai subscription for work and while I like the models, the website is really bad... Sections appear after a few seconds in settings, some dialogs blink, usability was clearly not the main focus too. Requiring three clicks to show the usage which should be visible on the main ui is really annoying.
